Moisture criteria for the control of mould growth in UK dwellings

Altamirano-Medina, H. January 2012 (has links)
When mould growth occurs indoors both the building fabric and the health of the occupants can be impacted. During the last few decades, an extensive body of work has been undertaken regarding the conditions that are required for mould to develop in buildings. Much is known about mould and these conditions; however, the design of standards that help to minimize its development indoors is extremely challenging. The science needs to be further advanced and then turned into implementable measures. This thesis addresses that challenge by firstly assessing the performance criteria for the control of mould introduced as part of the ventilation regulations for England and Wales (HMSO, 2006a). The criteria, stated in the Approved Document F 2006 (ADF 2006), established limiting values of air relative humidity to be met if mould growth on external walls is to be avoided. The work presented in this thesis investigates the extent to which the ADF 2006 performance criteria are the most appropriate for UK dwellings. The work undertaken includes assessment of the criteria through data analysis and laboratory work, but also the assessment of other principles and water-related parameters. As a result, a fundamental change to the criteria is proposed, whereby three averages of surface water activity values (0.75, 0.85 and 0.95) and air relative humidity values (65%, 75% and 85%) were recommended and proposed for three periods of time (respectively - daily, weekly and monthly) as an alternative to ADF 2006 to control mould growth. These new criteria have been adopted and implemented as part of the recently introduced ADF 2010. In addition, future approaches for the control of mould growth are discussed.

Les dynamiques territoriales du secteur de l’image en mouvement dans les aires métropolitaines de Lille, de Lyon et de Marseille / Territorial dynamics of the image sector in the Lille, Lyon and Marseille metropolitan areas

Lusso, Bruno 30 November 2011 (has links)
In France, creative industries are traditionally concentrated in the Paris region. During the 1980s, the decentralisation have given to the actors of the Lille, Lyon and Marseille metropolitan areas more power. So they have decided to launch a policy in favor of the image sector. But those creative industries are more or less developped thanks to different regional assets: local TV or newspapers, filming tradition, HEIs, microelectronics or multimedia industries… However, the image sector remains still largely emergent and little structured. In order to retain the workforce trained in the metropolitan areas and tempted to leave the region, public authorities has decided to launch media districts or crossmedia clusters policies. Nevertheless, networks dynamics is still very fragile and emergent in the image sector, that requires a support of public authorities in the long term.

Making the bed : the practice, role and significance of housekeeping in the royal bedchambers at Hampton Court Palace 1689-1737

Fryman, Oliva January 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores and analyses the practices, role and significance of housekeeping in the royal bedchambers at Hampton Court in the period between 1689 and 1737. Specifically, it seeks to chart contemporary practices of care and maintenance and to situate this work within the context of the rooms that lay at the heart of the late-Stuart and early-Hanoverian courts. A broad range of primary sources have been used to inform the study, in particular the records of the Lord Chamberlain and the Great Wardrobe. These archives are considered in relation to the material culture of the interiors at Hampton Court and are placed within the broader framework of social and political histories of the period. The thesis is divided into two main parts, the first of which explores the context of the royal bedchambers at Hampton Court. Starting with the premise that the practices of housekeeping were shaped by the specific environment in which they operated, it provides an exposition of the dual significance of this area of the palace as a space for magnificent court ceremony and as a retreat for the rituals of royal private life. Developing these findings, the second part of the study discusses housekeeping practices and the servants who undertook this work. In particular, it focuses on the identity, role and status of the lower ranking female servants of the bedchamber department, the Keeper of the Standing Wardrobe and the Privy Lodgings and the craftsmen of the Great Wardrobe. Throughout the discussion of these individuals, and the practices of care and maintenance, is framed by an analysis of the motivations for good housekeeping at court, and the meanings that were ascribed to this work. The research contained within this thesis contributes to our knowledge of the royal bedchambers at Hampton Court, in a key phase of the palace's history. by offering a more complete picture of how these rooms were inhabited by domestic servants as well as the monarch. New light is also shed on the many long periods when Hampton Court lay empty and the spheres of activity that took place in the absence of the court. The findings of this thesis demonstrate the significant role played by housekeeping as an essential underpinning for the use of Hampton Court as a royal home and as a splendid place of court.

Fashion design and laundry practices : practice-orientated approaches to design for sustainability

Rigby, Emma Dulcie January 2016 (has links)
This doctoral enquiry develops practice-orientated approaches to design for sustainability. It focuses on the relationship between garment design, laundry practices and sustainability, and responds to research that evidences domestic laundering as one of the most environmentally damaging stages in a garment’s lifecycle (Allwood, et al.,2006; Hansen, et al., 2007). A one-year laundry study surveyed the use and laundry of sixteen garments to ascertain the relationship between garment design and laundry behaviour. The research findings revealed that laundry behaviours are complex and unpredictable, and often not directly linked to producing cleaner clothes. Laundry routines are underpinned by factors beyond cleanliness including: garment use, social auditing, garment aesthetics, life stage, cultural norms, and spatial arrangements within the household. Through re-examining laundry as a social practice the research develops a series of design provocations to challenge the organisation of laundry practices, and by extension the frequencies and processes in which laundry is carried out. The findings highlight that understanding laundry as a social practice opens a space to reconceptualise design, laundry behaviour and sustainability. It decentres material products and attends to the embedded social dynamics that are set within a nexus of spaces, materials, thoughts, actions and emotions. This provides an alternative lens from which to view and develop design theories and practice for sustainability in fashion. The central insight from the research shows there are multiple benefits from incorporating social theory into methodologies for design for sustainability.

Evaluation Of Steel Building Design Methodologies: Ts648,eurocode 3 And Lrfd

Zervent, Altan 01 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is designing steel structures with the same geometry, material and soil conditions but in the different countries, and comparing these designs in terms of material savings. According to three steel building codes, namely TS 648, LRFD, Eurocode 3, same structures with various stories (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) are analyzed and designed. To calculate the design loads, Turkish Earthquake Code 2007 and Turkish Standard 498 (Design Load for Buildings) are utilized when TS 648 is applied. When LRFD is concerned, ASCE Standard 7-05 (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures) and AISC Standard 341-05 (Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings) are used for calculation of the design loads and earthquake loads. When Eurocode 3 is applied, Eurocode 8 (Earthquake Resistance Code), Eurocode 1 (Actions of Structures) and Eurocode-EN 1990 (Basis of Structural Design) are used in order to determine the design and earthquake loads. Weight of steel used on 1 m&sup2 / is almost the same for procedures of LRFD and EC3. It is important to note that those procedures consider 20 % of material saving compared to TS648.

Das Volkskommissariat für Außenhandel und seine Nachfolgeorganisationen 1920- 1930

Heubaum, Regine 01 March 2002 (has links)
This dissertation examines the People´s Comissariat of Foreign Trade as an example of the development of early Soviet bureaucracy and analyses administrative and political processes, proceeding the rise of stalinism. The study deals with the problems of centrally planned foreign trade and the difficulties of establishing trading connections to the capitalistic states in the post-revolutionary period. In this context international factors and conditions, dictated by world economy, are considered as well as the contradictory interests of Soviet foreign trade on one hand and soviet diplomacy on the other hand. The focus is set on decision-making concerning the relationship between party apparatus and the People´s Comissariats. In this context the author concentrates on three aspects: the influence of CK´s Policy of Cadre selection on People´s Comissariat of Foreign Trade, the organizational change in this institution during the New Economic Policy and the cooperation between the various economic and party institutions, concerning the decision on concrete questions of foreign trade.
