The Mizo people of, Mizoram, Northeast India have been predominantly Christian since the 1930’s after a series of spiritual revivals that began in 1906. Today, the churches still have a prominent role in society, influencing many aspects of life as well as death. A Mizo death is sonically marked and signalled to the rest of the community by the singing of hymns in the home of the bereaved for at least three days and nights, drawing many members of the community to the home. The repertoire of hymns is called khawhar zai, composed by Mizo Christians between 1919 and 1930. This thesis studies the khawhar zai repertoire and its significance for grieving communities both at the time of its composition and in the modern Mizo context. It attempts to make an original contribution to ethnomusicological scholarship by exploring anthropological approaches to hope and nostalgia in the light of the theological fields of eschatology and evangelicalism. This is intended to develop an understanding of the expression of hope through funeral singing, particularly in the Mizo context but with wider implications for other Christian communities.

For almost three centuries, the sacred villancico was the primary vernacular musical form of Spain and its New World colonies. Consisting of a through-composed estribillo, or refrain, and a set of strophic coplas, or verses, these ‘devout and honest songs’ (as they were styled by the Third Mexican Provincial Council of 1585) featured in the Matins services of the cathedrals and convents of Mexico throughout the colonial period. This thesis traces the morphology, development and significance of the villancico in New Spain during the one hundred year period from 1650 to 1750, examining the musical development of the genre within the institutional contexts of cathedral, convent and girls’ school. The biographies and villancico oeuvres of the composers Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, Antonio de Salazar, Manuel de Sumaya, and others who moved in their orbits are reconsidered in light of new music and documentation, while the supposed New World phenomenon of the villancico de negros, or African dialect villancico, receives fresh attention. In separate chapters, the feminine side of genre is examined. The musical aspects of the life of the Hieronymite nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz are considered from the viewpoint of the music historian, while the practice of the villancico in the feminine institutions of New Spain is explored. Focussing on period documents as a means of enriching the historical narrative, the thesis is intended as an interpretation of the villancico genre for the English-speaking reader.

Anlässlich der Lutherdekade 2008-2017 zeigt die Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB) im Themenjahr „Reformation und Musik“ vom 23. September 2012 bis 2. Februar 2013 im Buchmuseum und in der Galerie am Lesesaal die Ausstellung „Luthers Lieder“. Diese würdigt die Verdienste Martin Luthers um die Neugestaltung des evangelischen Gottesdienstes und die Einführung des Gemeindegesanges, der seinen Platz gleichberechtigt neben Wortverkündigung und Gebet fand. Die Ausstellung in der SLUB will mit Erst- und Frühdrucken von Gesangbüchern und Gottesdienstordnungen aus ihren eigenen Beständen das Wirken des Reformators als Liederdichter verdeutlichen. Dazu gehören aktuelle Zeit- und Bekenntnislieder, Psalm- und Bibellieder, Lieder zu den kirchlichen Festen, katechetische Lehrlieder zum Gebrauch in der Familie und in der Schule sowie Übersetzungen von lateinischen Hymnen und anderen liturgischen Gesängen. Die Ausstellung entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Evangelisch-Lutherischen Landeskirchenamt Sachsens, das die Exposition gemeinsam mit anderen kirchlichen Institutionen durch Leihgaben unterstützte.
