Psychiatric advance directives (PADs) are legal documents allowing competent individuals to declare their treatment preferences in advance of a mental health crisis. The objective of this thesis is to examine psychosocial perceptions of legal and mental health professionals in Ontario and Quebec regarding their knowledge and willingness to implement PADs. Two hundred professionals---psychiatrists, psychologists, lawyers and administrative tribunal members---participated in an Web-survey measuring psychosocial perceptions of clinical, ethical, legal and implementation factors of PADs. Results indicate Quebec professionals are more willing to begin using PADs than Ontario professionals. Mental health professionals reported more concern than legal professionals for medical malpractice lawsuits for overriding PADs. Advantages of PADs most commonly reported are patients' ability to declare their clear wishes ahead of time, respect for autonomous choice, and establishing a collaborative treatment plan with physicians. Disadvantages included patients' lack of awareness, treatment refusal, and being self-bound to an earlier decision.

The main purpose of this study was to establish how effectively mediation was applied to advance learners‟ fundamental rights in English First Additional Language classrooms. The researcher did a literature study in Chapter Two to do research on the concept mediation. The researcher briefly looked at a variety of approaches to mediation before deciding to base her study on the twelve mediation principles of Feuerstein. The advantages gained by following a mediational approach while teaching learners could not be disputed. In Chapter Three, the researcher investigated which fundamental rights learners have at South African schools. A variety of legislation was studied before determining those Acts and the legislation applicable to learners‟ fundamental rights. The researcher then proceeded with her empirical design in which she discussed the quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection which were triangulated in order to make findings. The researcher ensured that both mediation and fundamental rights were tested in the questionnaires which were answered by educators and learners. Thereafter, three focus group interviews were held with the educators who had completed the questionnaires. Lastly, the researcher conducted six observations during English First Additional Language literature periods. In order to advance learners‟ fundamental rights while applying mediation during literature periods, the researcher developed a teaching and learning programme for poetry in Grade 11 English First Additional Language educators. Through the research it was found that educators neglect the application of mediation. Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der Kenntnis über Patientenverfügungen sowie deren Akzeptanz und dem Vorhandensein dieser Vorsorgedokumente innerhalb eines Studienkollektives von Senioren in Leipziger Alten- und Pflegeheimen. Der Gegenstand der Patientenverfügung selbst wird, unter Berücksichtigung soziodemographischer, persönlicher sowie gesundheitlicher Aspekte, evaluiert. Außerdem werden Standpunkte der Heimbewohner wie beispielsweise die Bereitschaft zu lebensverlängernden Therapien sowie zu Reanimationsmaßnahmen hinterfragt. Vor dem Hintergrund der Ergebnisse werden Lösungsmöglichkeiten diskutiert, welche die Grenze zwischen medizinisch-technisch Möglichen und ethisch Vertretbarem bezüglich der Entscheidungen am Lebensende regulieren können.

For the last four decades, psycholinguistic research has dealt with the question to what extent elements of simple sentences like “The monk read the book” are planned ahead both on the abstract-lexical and phonological processing level. While a number of studies have shown that all up to the final element can be activated on these two levels, empirical evidence on the flexibility of the respective planning scopes is inconsistent, and a systematic delineation of the influence of different forms of cognitive load has not yet been provided. This thesis presents a series of 9 picture-word interference experiments in which participants produced subject-verb-object sentences while ignoring auditory distractor words. Advance planning was assessed at an abstract-lexical (lemma) level and at a phonological (word form) level under varying working memory load conditions (no load, or visuospatial load, or verbal load). In the absence of a concurrent working memory load and with a concurrent visuospatial working memory load, subject and object nouns were found to be activated at the abstract-lexical and the phonological level prior to speech onset. By contrast, with a concurrent verbal working load, the scope of advance planning at the phonological level was reduced, while the scope of advance planning at the abstract-lexical level remained unaffected. Moreover, sentence planning had a more disruptive effect on verbal working memory performance than on visuospatial working memory performance. Overall, these results suggest that advance planning at the phonological level is more adaptive to external factors than advance planning at the abstract-lexical level. Also, they indicate an overlap of resources allocated to phonological processing in speech production and verbal working memory.

In this study we address a periodic review capacitated inventory system with supply uncertainty where advance demand information is available. A stochastic dynamic programming formulation is applied with the objective of minimizing the expected inventory related costs over a finite horizon. Three different supply processes are assumed. Under the all-or-nothing type supply process and partially available supply process, the structure of optimal policy is proved to be a base stock policy and numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effects of system parameters. Under Binomially distributed supply process it is shown that a simple base stock policy is not optimal.
