______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study concerns the situation of HIV-positive teenagers and how they relate within society, with their families, health professionals and the State. The main goal was to investigate the perceptions of teenagers living with HIV/AIDS on aspects like being HIV-positive, being respected as individuals, participation on de decision making process regarding their own treatment, perspectives for their future lives, and also the perception of professionals dealing with the teenagers directly (specialized service pediatricians) and on an administrative level (public servant of the national program on STDs/AIDS). With that in mind, the study focused on how social stigma and prejudice affect these individuals' daily lives and how their families deal with them. The analysis determined whether HIV-positive people from 10 years to 19 years and 11 months of age endure prejudice as do other stigmatized individuals, with the added mark of being "teenagers". Furthermore, we found that the HIV status of these individuals limits their access to citizenship. Data was collected from official sources from the Brazilian federal government, United Nations, interviews and focal groups. The findings include the following: that there is no effective public policy in place geared towards the population of teenagers living with HIV; that, generally speaking, specialized services are ill prepared to cater to HIV-positive teenagers; that HIV-positive teenagers are vulnerable due to factors directly dependent on individual care and to those dependent on the degree of awareness regarding personal care within the situation that an HIV-positive status encompasses; that most teenagers prepare themselves for a “long” lifespan and reasonably “normal”, as most other teenagers, i.e., hope to develop into professional skills, long term relationships and families of their own; that teenagers, their families and care professionals do hide their HIV status as a strategy to ensure an active and "normal" social life.
