This research presents three case studies aiming at empirically investigating modeling as a learning tool for the musical and pianistic development of undergraduate students. Each one of the three students was instructed to critically listen to the recording of a famous pianist as a model to be followed. Data collection combined three recording sessions of two contrasting excerpts already in the students repertoire and five semi- structured interviews. The analysis of the resulting data was based on individual reports concerning the selected musical segments as well as their reflection on learning processes in relation to the model, observations of interpretive characteristics after the modeling and analysis of timing and choices of musical tempo. The chosen software was Sonic Visualiser. Data analysis in combination with the sets of individual interviews confirmed our initial hypothesis that modeling increases and widens the their interpretations, potentiates critical listening and promotes reflection on learning processes.

It is intended to study the relationship between the works for solo piano by Ronaldo Miranda, identifying the compositional procedures used by the composer and, thereafter extracting tools to facilitate a proper musical interpretation thereof. The object of this project is based on the musical interpretation, through the notational characteristics under an analytical view and setting up the peculiarities of the pianistic writing. It is proposed that the interpreter has prior knowledge of the elements that are widely used by the composer and consider the technical exercises suggested in the last chapter, composed by the author of this research, based on the identification and recurrence of pianistic patterns of Ronaldo Miranda. Thus, the pianist will have at his disposal, resources that will build a more cohesive rendition, considering the cognitive process, perception and attention given in preparation for performing the work

The purpose of this study is to investigate the profile of piano teachers in Porto Alegre/RS, as to their formation and performance. Other goals include the characterization of these teachers’ formation and their involvement as teachers, identifying the reasons and/or motives of this professional choice. For the analysis of the data, this research is sustained by established theoretical principles in the professionalization of education according to Ramalho, Nuñez and Gauthier (2004). As for the research method, an intersectional survey with active piano teachers in Porto Alegre was conducted; the sample “snow ball” was employed as the strategy to obtain indications from these teachers. The data was gathered through an automanaged questionnaire which was answered by 104 teachers. The results showed that the teachers who are active as piano teachers in Porto Alegre seem to approach the models for the improvised teacher, the teacher craftsman and the professional teacher, according to models based on Ramalho, Nuñez and Gauthier (2004).

Conducting from the Piano? A Tradition Worth Reviving?Marshall, Eldred 05 1900 (has links)
Is conducting from the piano "real conducting?" Does one need formal orchestral conducting training in order to conduct classical-era piano concertos from the piano? Do Mozart piano concertos need a conductor? These are all questions this paper attempts to answer.

Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 In B-Flat Minor, Op. 23: A Newly Arranged Edition of the Orchestral ReductionParys, Marcin 12 1900 (has links)
As it stands, only one arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 23 orchestral reduction exists, which is by Tchaikovsky himself. A number of critical editions of the piece exist, but none of them cover the subject of the material within the orchestral reduction. Tchaikovsky wrote the reduction from a compositional rather than a pianistic perspective, thus some passages present awkward technical challenges. The purpose of this dissertation is ultimately to contribute to the repertoire of accompanists by producing a new edition of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. I created my arrangement through a process of practical trial and error as well as observing the strategies used by other arrangers of orchestral reductions. Through a series of carefully selected omissions, note rearrangements, visual adjustments, and editorial changes, I simplified the reduction as a whole. I sought to improve the readability of the music by reducing accidentals as much as possible and also incorporating small-print cues into the main staves. Each minor adjustment or major revision contributes cumulatively to the ease of execution of the accompanimental part as a whole. Although Tchaikovsky's reduction is authentic and authoritative, a newly revised and simplified version would be useful for collaborative pianists. Thus, I have chosen to create an alternative version of Tchaikovsky's reduction, while still retaining as much of the original material as possible. This edition focuses solely on the collaborative pianist's part.

A Holy Night: 10 Arrangements of Timeless Carols: Preparing Early Advanced Piano Students for Standard RepertoireNahkur, Hando 12 1900 (has links)
It is often challenging for early advanced piano students to move from intermediate level repertoire to standard repertoire because the techniques and difficulties present in the new repertoire are simply too overwhelming for them. "A Holy Night: 10 Arrangements of Timeless Carols" can help bridge the gap between the two repertoire categories by introducing several advanced techniques and combinations of techniques to early advanced students in a non-overwhelming way. Several standard techniques that were widely used by composers of different styles are addressed in the arrangements: legato and chord playing, orientation in different keys, pedaling, dynamics and octave playing. The topic of fingerings is also covered since using correct fingerings is a key for any technique to work. The arrangements help to prepare early advanced students for standard repertoire by allowing them to learn, practice, and perform a variety of standard repertoire techniques in short and engaging pieces. This dissertation is intended to demonstrate to private piano teachers ways in which this arrangement of mostly well-known seasonal tunes can be used to assist in the transition to more advanced repertoire.

Paul Wittgenstein's Transcriptions for Left Hand: Pianistic Techniques and Performance Problems : A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of R. Schumann, S. Prokofiev, F. Liszt, M. Ravel, and F. ChopinKong, Won-Young 08 1900 (has links)
Paul Wittgenstein (1887-1961) made significant contributions to the piano literature for the left hand through numerous commissioned works as well as his own transcriptions. In the transcriptions, Wittgenstein preserved the texture of two-hand music, aiming for the simulation of the original works. This requires special techniques in the performance by the left hand alone. This dissertation investigations technical means and performance problems associated with the transcriptions as well as Wittgenstein's own recordings of selections from his works. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction, providing a historical overview of the role of the left hand in two-hand piano literature. Chapter 2 gives biological information on Paul Wittgenstein and discusses the commissioned works. Chapter 3 investigates special techniques in the transcriptions, in the areas of arpeggios, widespread chords, fingering, pedaling, and others. Chapter 4 discusses Wittgensteins's performance style based on his recordings. Chapter 5 presents a conclusion pointing to the benefits of performing left-hand music in two-hand piano playing.
