Mixing Processes for Ground Improvement by Deep Mixing

Larsson, Stefan January 2003 (has links)
The thesis is dealing with mixing processes havingapplication to ground improvement by deep mixing. The mainobjectives of the thesis is to make a contribution to knowledgeof the basic mechanisms in mixing binding agents into soil andimprove the knowledge concerning factors that influence theuniformity of stabilised soil. A great part of the work consists of a literature surveywith particular emphasis on literature on the processindustries. This review forms a basis for a profounddescription and discussion of the mixing process and factorsaffecting the process in connection with deep mixingmethods. The thesis presents a method for a simple field test for thestudy of influential factors in the mixing process. A number offactors in the installation process of lime-cement columns havebeen studied in two field tests using statistical multifactorexperiment design. The effects of retrieval rate, number ofmixing blades, rotation speed, air pressure in the storagetank, and diameter of the binder outlet on the stabilisationeffect and the coefficient of variation determined byhand-operated penetrometer tests for excavated lime-cementcolumns, were studied. The literature review, the description of the mixingprocess, and the results from the field tests provide a morebalanced picture of the mixing process and are expected to beuseful in connection to ground improvement projects and thedevelopment of mixing equipments. The concept of sufficient mixture quality, i.e. theinteraction between the mixing process and the mechanicalsystem, is discussed in the last section. By means ofgeostatistical methods, the analysis considers thevolume-variability relationship with reference to strengthproperties. According to the analysis, the design values forstrength properties depends on the mechanical system, the scaleof scrutiny, the spatial correlation structure, and the conceptof safety, i.e. the concept of sufficient mixture quality isproblem specific. Trust within teams : the relative importance of ability, benevolence and integrity

Beatton, Douglas A. January 2007 (has links)
Trust between team members is important: Research has shown that teams with higher levels of trust have a propensity to be higher performers. This study built on contemporary trust theory by examining initial interpersonal trust development between a new team member and a newly formed work-team using experimental rather than correlation-based survey methods. Undergraduate students from a metropolitan Australian university participated in a vignette experiment examining the effect of teams with varying levels of Ability, Benevolence and Integrity on trust development. It was hypothesised that these antecedents of trust do not have similar effect on our Intention to Trust as is currently depicted in Mayer, Davis and Schoorman's (1995) integrative model of organisational trust. Their model is developed by hypothesising that the type and magnitude of the information we receive about a trustee moderates the relationship between our Intention to Trust and its antecedents. Initial examination of the traditional scales identified overlaps that needed clarification. This was completed by informing existing scales and the vignette manipulations with the context specific information that emerged from the thematic analysis of structured interviews. Subsequent analyses of the questionnaire data used ANOVA and Structural Equation Modelling techniques. In testing the hypotheses, Ability was found to be most salient in the development of Intention to Trust. This research contributes methodologically by developing a vignette-based experimental method that improves the reliability of existing trust scales. The study contributes theoretically by further explaining the salience of the trust antecedents and practically by identifying that the judgment and decision-making of new workteam members can be distorted by halo bias wherein they ignore the Benevolence traits of team members of a group that exhibits high levels of Ability.

Global sensitivity analysis of fault location algorithms.

Ooi, Hoong Boon January 2009 (has links)
Transmission lines of any voltage level are subject to faults. To speed up repairs and restoration of power, it is important to know where the fault is located. A fault location algorithm’s result is influenced by a series of modeling equations, setting parameters and system factors reflected in voltage and current inputs. The factors mentioned are subject to sources of uncertainty including measurement and signal processing errors, setting errors and incomplete modeling of a system under fault conditions. These errors have affected the accuracy of the distance to fault calculation. Accurate fault location reduces operating costs by avoiding lengthy and expensive patrols. Accurate fault location speeds up repairs and restoration of lines, ultimately reducing revenue loss caused by outages. In this thesis, we have reviewed the fault location algorithms and also how the uncertainty affects the results of fault location. Sensitivity analysis is able to analyze how the variation in the output of the fault location algorithms can be allocated to the variation of uncertain factors. In this research, we have used global sensitivity analysis to determine the most contributed uncertain factors and also the interaction of the uncertain factors. We have chosen Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) decomposition as our global sensitivity analysis. ANOVA decomposition shows us the insight of the fault location, such as relations between uncertain factors of the fault location. Quasi regression technique has also been used to approximate a function. In this research, the transmission line fault location system is fitted into the ANOVA decomposition using quasi regression. From the approximate function, we are able to get the variance of the sensitivity of fault location to uncertain factors using Monte Carlo method. In this research, we have designed novel methodology to test the fault location algorithms and compare the fault location algorithms. In practice, such analysis not only helps in selecting the optimal locator for a specific application, it also helps in the calibration process. / Thesis (M.Eng.Sc.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2009

A segunda metodologia utiliza análise de variância (ANOVA) para propor uma metodologia de detecção mais robusta, e assim, incorporar variações aleatórias nos sistemas de medição e aquisição sem comprometer o diagnóstico SHM / Researchers around the world are engaged to develop techniques for structural health monitoring of machinery, vehicles and structures, especially systems where damage or destruction could induce accidents and disasters. In this context, several non-destructive techniques can be used to monitor these systems allowing repairs and avoiding major economic losses or social losses. The electromechanical impedance technique is among the techniques based on piezoelectric materials use and it is sensible to small variations in the structure which makes it efficient in detecting incipient damages. However, variations in the ambient or test conditions can cause false diagnoses. Therefore, the current challenge is to apply the electromechanical impedance technique considering monitoring conditions closer to real operating conditions of the systems to be monitored. This work presents two methodologies for SHM systems. The first one uses Fuzzy c-means clustering to distinguish the temperature effect on impedance signal. The second method uses analysis of variance (ANOVA) to propose a more robust detection methodology and thus incorporate random variations in measurement systems and acquisition without loss of SHM diagnostic

IMPACT OF HEAT TREATMENT AND OXIDATION OF C/C COMPOSITES ON MICROSTRUCTURE AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Iqbal, Sardar S. 01 December 2011 (has links)
Carbon-carbon (C/C) composites are notable among engineering materials in aerospace and defense industries possessing excellent specific mechanical, thermal, frictional and wear properties. C/C maintain their properties at temperatures where most of the high end alloys give in, and maintain their dimensional stability at temperatures above 2000 oC. C/C is frequently used in aircraft and automotive industries as brake materials. However, frictional performance is dependent on various parameters: microstructure, fiber type, fiber orientation distribution, fiber/matrix interfacial bond, heat treatment, and oxidation. The present study in dissertation provides an insight into the impact of heat treatment, and oxidation on microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties. The heat treatment (performed at 1800, 2100, 2400 oC in argon) of two-directional (2-D) pitch-fiber with charred resin carbon matrix, and three-directional (3-D) PAN-fiber with CVI carbon matrix influenced microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties. Microstructure characterized by polarized light microscopy (PLM), XRD, and Raman spectroscopy changed with increasing heat treatment temperature. The RL microstructure of 3-D C/C progressively highly organized, whereas ISO microstructure of 2-D C/C's charred resin hardly organized into an ordered structure as evident from Raman spectroscopy and Raman profiling of polished samples. Pitch-fiber organized more than the ISO microstructure of charred resin matrix. On the other, PAN-fiber became more ordered, but was organization was lower than pitch-fiber. Thermal conductivity increased for both (2-D, 3-D C/C) materials in comparison to non-heat treated (NHT) C/Cs. Thermal conductivity of oxidized samples decreased significantly than non-oxidized samples. In-plane thermal conductivity of 3-D C/C was much higher than that of 2-D C/C, and was attributed to the rough laminar (RL) microstructure of carbon matrix and continuous PAN-fiber when compared to the short pitch-fiber in isotropic (ISO) carbon matrix. Mechanical properties (tensile, compressive, shear) deteriorated with increasing heat treatment. However, statistical analysis using ANOVA showed that there was not any significant difference between the NHT and heat treated C/C materials in terms of mechanical strength, modulus, failure strain and fracture energy. The oxidized samples of heat treated (1800/2100/2400 oC) C/C materials (2-D, 3-D) showed an appreciable decrease in mechanical strength and modulus than non-oxidized samples, with progressively heat treated C/C becoming more oxidation resistant than NHT C/C. The study demonstrated a highly inhomogeneous nature of C/C, and sample size is a very important parameter in governing mechanical properties. Since, the slightest change in the dimension of samples could bring about a radically different outcome in terms of mechanical properties, and can hardly be representative of the bulk properties. Therefore, in order to obtain a good estimate of the bulk properties, the sample size must be comparable to the bulk material. The research nonetheless showed the impact of sample size in estimating the mechanical properties of bulk properties, which are highly significant after statistical analysis, and, therefore, it must be taken into account to understand the processing-structure-property-analysis relationships.

Um estudo da configuração de campanhas de publicidade digital : variáveis que afetam a taxa de cliques

Faria, Fellipe Gomes Marques de January 2017 (has links)
This master thesis aims to identify factors that influence on the results of digital advertising campaigns. To understand what can increase the digital click-through rate in these campaings, the first part of this research addressed a literature review about academic and professional studies about the influencing factors of these campaigns. The identified factors were organized in three main categories from the information-processing theory: source, message and recipient dimensions. These factors were then analyzed by means of a factorial experiment project using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The factors chosen were target gender, the advertiser’s economic segment and the advertisment characteristics: color and presence of animation and call to action. The experiment concluded that some factors were meaningful for the increase of the click-through rate. The fit between advertising campaign and the advertiser’s product target, absence of call to action phrase and non-animated banners presented meaningful increases in the performances of the banners click-through rates. The conclusions of this study point useful directions for digital media advertisers. From academic point of view, the literature revision and the analysis of variance in this research provide evidences for the understanding the main influence factors in this kind of projects.

Concreto autoadensÃvel com agregados graÃdos reciclados de concreto / Self-compacting Concrete with Recycled Concrete Coarse Aggregate

Kelvya Maria de Vasconcelos Moreira 06 June 2012 (has links)
The self-compacting concrete (SCC) has intrinsic properties that distinguish it known current conventional concrete. It is factors like self-compacting capacity, high amount of fines and mandatory use of superplasticizer that make the SCC a material of high performance, favorable to the durability and is considered an evolution in concrete technology and prone to become the future conventional concrete. On the other hand, the residue originated in the construction industry itself has aroused serious concern to the community, because it is a residue difficult to discard. It is generated in ever-increasing volumes due to economic growth in the country with con sequent increase in power population's purchasing. From this perspective, we analyzed the production of SCC with replacement of natural coarse aggregate (NCA) for recycled aggregates from concrete recycling, called recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), in the percentages of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%. Knowing that recycled aggregate, in general, has distinct characteristics of natural aggregate, the methodology started with the treatment of RCA and physical characterization of all aggregates (conventional and recycled). Then, it was done the dosage study with the w/c ratio of 0.35, 0.45 and 0.55. After, we studied a total of 12 mixtures of SCC to evaluate its properties in fresh and hardened state. The tests in the hardened state were: compressive strength at 28 and 56 days, modulus of elasticity at 56 days, water absorption by immersion at 28 days, content of voids at 28 days, specific gravity at 28 days and the depth of natural carbonation at 200 days. We proceeded to statistical processing of results by analysis of v ariance (ANOVA) followed by mathematical modeling and model‟s ANOVA. Finally, it was concluded that the high content of superplasticizer results from the dosage study of lower w/c ratio can be influenced to achieve concretes more workable and less sensitiv e to the incorporation of an aggregate more porous than the natural aggregate. It was also found that the properties of the SCC manufactured were affected more significantly by the w/c ratio, indicating the possibility of substitution of higher levels of NCA by RCA
