Performance Measurement and Analysis of Transactional Web Archiving

Maharshi, Shivam 19 July 2017 (has links)
Web archiving is necessary to retain the history of the World Wide Web and to study its evolution. It is important for the cultural heritage community. Some organizations are legally obligated to capture and archive Web content. The advent of transactional Web archiving makes the archiving process more efficient, thereby aiding organizations to archive their Web content. This study measures and analyzes the performance of transactional Web archiving systems. To conduct a detailed analysis, we construct a meaningful design space defined by the system specifications that determine the performance of these systems. SiteStory, a state-of-the-art transactional Web archiving system, and local archiving, an alternative archiving technique, are used in this research. We experimentally evaluate the performance of these systems using the Greek version of Wikipedia deployed on dedicated hardware on a private network. Our benchmarking results show that the local archiving technique uses a Web server’s resources more efficiently than SiteStory for one data point in our design space. Better performance than SiteStory in such scenarios makes our archiving solution favorable to use for transactional archiving. We also show that SiteStory does not impose any significant performance overhead on the Web server for the rest of the data points in our design space. / Master of Science

Protocol specification and implementation for ISO-based local and global picture archiving and communications systems.

Nam, Jiseung. January 1992 (has links)
Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) provides an integration of digital imaging information in a hospital, which encompasses various imaging equipment, viewing workstations, database archive systems, and networks. The integration requires proper communication protocols to connect devices from different vendors. In this dissertation, new communication protocols are defined based on previous experiences on PACS developments. Defined protocols are intended to facilitate the development of PACS which is capable of interfacing with other hospital information systems. Protocol specifications are defined primarily as a combination of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocols and the data format portion of the American College of Radiology and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (ACR-NEMA) standard. Prototypes of defined protocols have been implemented on the SUN workstation and the VAX 11/730. Results of performance evaluation are presented to demonstrate the implementation of defined protocol.

The present research monitors and analyzes the development of the project “________(title)” between the years 2012 and 2015. This project is an experimental process of archiving, editing and presentation of a serie of books and installations which include the participation of others artists. In the research are discussed issues like formation, performativity, forms of presentation and archiving in contemporary art. As result of the research are presented a new printed version of the “________(title)” book and the experimental installation at Pinacoteca Barão de Ângelo do Instituto de Artes.

Effect of Collection Method and Archiving Conditions on the Survivability of Vegetative and Spore Forming Bacteria

Kassab, Asmaa S. 2009 August 1900 (has links)
To ensure effective detection of bio-particles, it is crucial to understand the effects of collection method and archiving conditions on the survivability of bioaerosols, consequently, the survivability of the spore-forming Bacillus globigii (BG) and MG1655 Escherichia coli (E. coli), was determined after collection. The survivability was defined as the culturable fraction of the archived bacteria/culturable fraction of the as-collected bacteria. The bacteria were aerosolized for up to four days at room temperature (RT, 25 degrees C) and at 4 degrees C and collected in a 100 L/min wetted wall cyclone (WWC) and a 12.5 L/min SKC BioSampler. Aqueous solutions of 0.01% Tween-20 and 30% Ethylene Glycol (EG), with or without 0.5% ovalbumin (OA), were used as the collection fluids. Antifoam B (A-F), at a concentration of 0.2% (V:V) was added to the BG samples containing OA. In general, samples archived at 4 degrees C showed higher survivability than at RT. The survivability were more stable in EG than in Tween-20 especially for BG, very likely due to the surfactant effect of the Tween-20, which would remove the spore coat and initiate germination. In the WWC, adding OA significantly increased the survivability of BG in EG and in Tween-20, especially at RT. Similar effect of OA was found for E. coli samples stored in EG, suggesting that OA might be beneficial in maintaining the survivability. Adding A-F increased the survivability of BG in EG. In the SKC, neither the addition of OA nor A-F seems to have a beneficial effect on the survivability of the spores in EG samples. The best collection fluid for maintaining survivability in the WWC is EG+A-F for BG, and EG+OA for E. coli. However, in the SKC, EG is the best for BG collection and Tween-20 for E. coli. Viability transfer ratios, VTR, (cells surviving collection at time zero/viable cells aerosolized) were calculated for both devices. A performance ratio was calculated as the VTR of the WWC/VTR of the SKC. The geometric mean of the performance ratio is 1.51+/-0.83 for BG and 2.60+/-0.16 for E. coli, indicating that viability transfer ratio of the WWC is typically higher than that of the SKC.

The dramatic growth of open access : implications and opportunities for resource sharing

Morrison, Heather 08 1900 (has links)
The Open Access movement seeks to make scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles freely available to anyone, anywhere over the World Wide Web. There were some very significant developments in the area of Open Access (OA) in 2004, including statements by major funders in support of Open Access. There are now so many Open Access scholarly journal articles freely available, that, in the author’s opinion, being aware of, and using, the resources and related tools is now essential for libraries. Libraries can provide more resources faster for users by supplementing paid resources with ones that are Open Access. Library resources, such as link resolvers, are beginning to incorporate Open Access materials and web searches for Open Access materials. For example, the reSearcher software suite includes Open Access collections along with subscription-based resources in the CUFTS journals knowledgebase, and a web search for an Open Access copy of an article in the GODOT link resolver. SFX also incorporates Open Access journals. After exhausting more traditional resources, interlibrary loans staff are beginning to include Google searching in their workflow. This article will discuss what Open Access is, the dramatic growth of Open Access, and major collections, resources and tools. Implications, issues, and leadership opportunities for resource sharing specialists will be explored.

Participatory archiving: exploring a collaborative approach to Aboriginal societal provenance

Rydz, Michelle 23 September 2010 (has links)
This thesis outlines the history of thinking about provenance in the archival profession, focusing specifically on the emergence of the concept of societal provenance and its implications for Aboriginal societal memory. It presents various ways in which the archival profession is currently involved in participatory projects for the public at large and for Aboriginal communities in particular. This thesis asks the question, if records are a creation of community and society, then should not community and society be more involved in their archiving? The thesis calls on archivists to advance the practice of participatory archiving by continuing to engage in collaborative projects, to open dialogue between the archival profession and Aboriginal communities as a means of establishing relationships of trust, and to embrace ways of remembering that challenge and unsettle the traditional archival application of provenance.
