Thin film calixresorcinarene membranes for chemical sensing

Wilkop, Thomas January 2001 (has links)
Novel applications for calix[4]recorcinarene (C[4]RA) sensing membranes have been investigated. A comprehensive deposition study was carried out, encompassing casting, spin coating and Langmuir Blodgett (LB) deposition. The spin coating thickness depended on the angular velocity w, following the description of d = c.wx with coefficients of x - 0.44 and - 0.48 for concentrations of 1 mg/ml and 2mg/ml respectively. The analysis of the LB deposited films established a thickness of 0.95 nm for a monolayer. Furthermore the C[4]RA, was successfully employed as a deposition matrix for a non surface active polymer, poly-ortho-methoxy aniline (POMA), which can otherwise not be deposited by LB. The composite film showed good homogeneity and based on thickness and UV measurements a structural model for it was developed, in which two polymer strands aligned themselves per C[4]RA layer, resulting in a monolayer thickness of 2.1 - 2.2 nm. The response of the C[4]RA and the composite membranes to a variety of organic and inorganic gaseous pollutants was investigated by Surface Plasmon Resonance studies, conductivity and capacitance measurements and UV spectroscopic studies. The integration of cast films into the gate of a charge flow transistor, is the first application of pure calixarenes in a conduction based sensor. The turn on response of the transistor is modulated by a variety of organic vapours, at the saturation vapour pressure, showing selectivity between polar and non-polar solvents, i.e. chloroform, methanol, acetone and hexane, with no cross sensitivity to water vapour. The modulation lies within factors of 45 for CHCI3 and 13 for CH3OH. The conductivity increase is partially attributed to micro-condensation of the vapours inside the micro-porous membrane. A successful application of this implementation as an explosion guard sensor for acetone is demonstrated. Gold electrodes with and without C[4]RA LB films have been characterised using impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammography. The modification of the gold electrodes by the C[4]RA film changes their constant phase element impedance, given by 1/(w.Q)" with w being the angular velocity. The observed values were from Q =0.725-10 -5 Farad and n = 0.87 to Q = 0.828-10-6 Farad and n = 0.82. Organic analyteslike, chloroform and acetone in water can be successfully detected with these electrodes. It is shown by cyclic voltammetry, that the permeability of the C[4]RA LB films is modulated by the organic solvents.

Electric Dichroism Spectroscopy in the Vacuum Ultraviolet

Causley, Gary C. 05 1900 (has links)
When a molecule, which possess a permanent dipole moment is exposed to an intense electric field, its absorption spectrum may be altered. These alterations are manifest as shifts in energy and as changes in band shape and intensity. The electric dichroism of absorption bands can be used to probe the excited state that is formed when a molecule undergoes a transition. The properties that may be investigated include transition polarization, excited state dipole moment and mean polarizability, and field-induced mixing of symmetrically equivalent excited states. The theoretical model and experimental devices that have been developed to determine these properties are presented and discussed. The data, taken in total, and its combination with other existing evidence, adds credence to the assignment of the second excited singlet of aldehydes and ketones to be extravalent, accompanied by relatively large delocalization of electronic charge, and polarized in-planiie and perpendicularly to the C-0 axis.

Blood interference in fluorescence spectrum : Experiment, analysis and comparison with intraoperative measurements on brain tumor

Lowndes, Shannely January 2010 (has links)
The optical touch pointer (OTP), a fluorescence spectroscopy based system, assists brain surgeons during guided brain tumor resection in patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). After recording and analyzing the autofluorescence spectrum of the tissue, it is possible to distinguish malignant from healthy brain tissue. A challenge during the intraoperative measurements is the interference of blood. If it gets in contact with the laser pointer, the blood blocks the light transmission to and from the tissue. The purposes of the project were to study and categorize patterns of blood interference and to present possible solutions to avoid signal blocking by blood. To measure fluorescence and reflection two devices were used respectively, the OTP which has a spectrometer and a blue laser, and the diffused reflection spectroscopy system (DRS) which has a spectrometer and a white light source. Both operate independently from each other and are connected to a fiber optical probe. A similar scenario to the one in the operation theater was simulated in the lab. Fluorescence and diffuse reflection measurements with and without blood were realized on skin and on two different plastic fluorescent standards. The results were analyzed with the aid of MatLAB, and compared with data collected in the hospital during brain tumor resection. The highest autofluorescence of brain tissue and skin is reached at approximately 506 nm. Although skin and both plastic standards have different optical properties regarding color or rather fluorescence, all of them presented very similar curves when blood on them blocked partially or completely the light transmission. A blood layer of more than 0.1 mm thickness blocks the blue laser light. Blood absorption happens at 541 and 577 nm due to oxy-hemoglobin (HbO2) in both liquid and dried blood. When the fluorescence spectrum is available but weak, the reflection spectrum contains two dips (traces of HbO2 at 541 and 577 nm). In brain there were cases in which light absorption occurred additionally at other wavelengths than the absorption peaks of deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) and HbO2. Blood interference during the OP can be prevented if the probe rests in a saline solution after every measurement. In this way the fresh blood sticking on the probe dissolves in the solution. For dried or coagulated blood, additional manual cleansing is needed.

FIRST-PRINCIPLES STUDIES OF FERROELECTRIC PROPERTIES IN ORGANIC CRYSTAL AND PEROVSKITE SUPERLATTICES

Dhuvad, Pratikkumar January 2018 (has links)
This thesis discusses structural and ferroelectric properties of two well-known classes of materials, perovskite oxides and Hydrogen bonded ferroelectrics, using first-principles calculations. Certain aspects of first principles calculations are central to the problems presented in this thesis. Such as the ability to calculate polarization based on the modern theory of polarization and calculation of ferroelectric property under finite electric displacement field. Therefore, these fundamental theoretical approaches are discussed following an opening section on the basic methodology of density-functional theory. In addition to the discussion on theoretical methods, a brief review of different phenomena and techniques crucial to alter/enhance ferroelectric properties at the interfaces of perovskite materials has been presented along with examples. The first problem presented in this thesis proposes and validates an alternative quantitative measure of ferroelectric(FE) and antiferrodistortive(AFD) instabilities by means of calculating inverse capacitance and layer inverse capacitance of layered perovskites. The presented methodological approach is applied to BaTiO$_{3}$/CaTiO$_{3}$ and PbTiO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ superlattices and it precisely estimates FE and AFD instabilities. Here we also present an approach to accurately predict the ferroelectric instabilities in large period superlattices from the statistical coefficients obtained from short period superlattices. In the second problem, we study ferroelectricity in an organic crystal(croconic acid) for which ferroelectric polarization is close to that of bulk BaTiO$_{3}$. We employ new meta-GGA functional named SCAN and revisit all structural and ferroelectric properties. Calculated X-ray absorption spectra(XAS) qualitatively and quantitatively agrees well with experimental O K-edge spectra. By discussing the origin of each XAS peak and their characteristic we demonstrate with a systematic approach the connection between ferroelectricity and XAS in croconic acid. Best to our knowledge such relation has not been realized in past. This study could prove XAS as a new way to measure ferroelectric instability in hydrogen-bonded organic ferroelectrics. / Physics

Properties of Liquid Water and Solvated Ions Based on First Principles Calculations

Zheng, Lixin January 2018 (has links)
Water is of essential importance for life on earth, yet the physics concerning its various anomalous properties has not been fully illuminated. This thesis is dedicated to the understanding of liquid water from aspects of microscopic structures, dynamics, electronic structures, X-ray absorption spectra, and proton transfer mechanism. This thesis use the computational simulation techniques including density functional theory (DFT), ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), and theoretical models for X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) to investigate the dynamics and electronic structures of liquid water system. The topics investigated in this thesis include a comprehensive evaluation on the simulation of liquid water using the newly developed SCAN meta-GGA functional, a systematic modeling of the liquid-water XAS using advanced ab initio approaches, and an explanation for a long-puzzling question that why hydronium diffuses faster than hydroxide in liquid water. Overall, significant contributions have been made to the understanding of liquid water and ionic solutions in the microscopic level through the aid of ab initio computational modeling. / Physics
