The Influence of a Group Mentoring Program on Adolescents' Parent and Peer RelationshipsHouse, Lawrence Duane 12 May 2005 (has links)
Group mentoring has received much less empirical attention than one-on-one mentoring and it is not clear whether group programs can be expected to yield similar outcomes or whether the mechanisms of change are similar compared to one-on-one mentoring programs. This study examined the effects of a group mentoring intervention on quality of relationships with parents and peers for 71 program participants relative to a comparison group of 31 students. Further, analyses were performed among program participants only to determine effects of sense of belonging with mentor and mentoring group on changes in quality of relationships with parents and peers. Findings revealed no program effects, yet among program participants, findings revealed that sense of belonging with mentor and group are important in predicting changes in quality of relationship with fathers and peers.

Parent-adolescent relationships after a divorceGlatz, Terese January 2006 (has links)

This study investigates if a divorce affects the attitudes and trust between parents and adolescents. Participants were 986 adolescents and their parents, taken from a Swedish longitudinal study, the “10 to 18” study. This study used 28 measures of parent-adolescent relationships, which created three areas: warmth, closeness and conflicts between parents and adolescents. The adolescents were divided into three groups, and one-way ANOVAs were made to test differences. The results showed that a divorce affects the father-adolescent relationship more than the mother-adolescent relationship. They also showed that the attitudes and the trust between parents and adolescents were affected by a divorce.
/
Den här studien undersökte om en skilsmässa kan påverka attityderna och tilliten mellan föräldrar och ungdomar. Parent-Adolescent Relationships, Sexuality-Related Communication and Sexual Identity DevelopmentPericak, Sandra A 04 September 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate sexuality-related topics discussed and not discussed with mothers, the perceived importance placed on sexuality-related communication within families, and the influences of parent-adolescent attachment quality and sexuality-related communication on sexual identity development using a sample of female university students. One hundred and eighty six participants completed an online survey consisting of questionnaires assessing their attachment relationship with their mothers, sexuality-related topic communication, perceptions of family sex communication, and sexual identity development. Sexuality-related topics falling within the development and societal concerns and sexual safety domains were more likely to be discussed than topics within the experience of sex or solitary sex domains. Family sexuality-related communication was perceived as important and valuable. Overall, results of this study indicated that attachment quality was negatively associated with sexual identity exploration, frequency of sexuality-related discussion was related to greater identity commitment scores, and orientation toward family sex communication was associated with greater identity synthesis/integration.

A Multivariate Model Of Parent-adolescent Relationship Variables In Early AdolescenceMcKinney, Cliff 01 January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine a multivariate model of parent-adolescent relationship variables, including parenting, family environment, expectations and conflict. These variables are examined simultaneously to investigate their relationships with adolescent adjustment in early adolescence. The sample for the current study consists of 710 culturally diverse participants who range in age from 11- to 14-years and who attend a middle school in a Southeastern state. Of these participants, 487 have a mother and father who participated in this study as well. Correlation analyses indicate that parental warmth and overprotection, family cohesion and adaptability, developmental expectations, and conflict are significant predictors of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in early adolescents. Structural equation modeling analyses indicate that fathers' parenting behaviors may not predict directly externalizing behavior problems in males and females but instead may act through conflict; more direct relationships exist when examining mothers' parenting behaviors. The impact of parenting, family environment, conflict, and sex on early adolescents' internalizing and externalizing behavior problems are emphasized.

Exploring closeness in parent-adolescent relationships (PAR) in a semi-rural, low-income community in the Western Cape Province of South AfricaBomester, Olivia 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research is limited regarding closeness in parent-adolescent relationships (PAR), particularly
in marginalised communities. The research objective was to explore closeness in PAR in one
semi-rural, low-income Coloured community in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
This study was exploratory in nature, making use of a cross-sectional survey research design
and semi-structured interviews. Fifty families (67 parents and 50 adolescents) were eligible
and willing to participate in the quantitative part of this study, while 12 families (19 parents
and 12 adolescents) took part in the qualitative part of the study. For the empirical
investigation into close PAR, the following questionnaires were administered to parents:
Mother and Father Versions of the Inventory of Parent Attachment (IPA), Revised Inventory
of Parent Attachment (RIPA), and the Relationship Closeness Inventory (RCI). The
questionnaires are currently not standardized for South African populations, therefore they
were adapted to suit the specific context and translated into Afrikaans.
For statistical analysis of the surveys, summary statistics was performed using measures like
means, standard deviations, frequency tables, and histograms. Reliability analysis was
conducted using Cronbach’s alpha. For comparison of the different instruments, correlations
were calculated. Comparisons between different groupings were done using two-way
ANOVA. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data and to explore the
participants’ constructions of close PAR.
General findings were that most female participants reported close mother-daughter
relationships while most male participants reported relatively close father-son relationships.
Overall, mothers generally spent more time with their adolescent children. Fathers and
daughters generally reported less close relationships with one another. Although fathers were
relatively more involved in their children’s lives compared to fathers in prior research studies,
mothers and adolescents reported to have a closer bond. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die navorsing is beperk ten opsigte van nabyheid in die ouer-adolessent verhoudings (OAV),
veral in gemarginaliseerde gemeenskappe.
Betroubaarheid analise is uitgevoer

The Acculturation of Chinese-American Adolescents in Negotiating Autonomy and Connectedness: Comparison between Chinese- and European-AmericansChang, Tzu-Fen 2009 August 1900 (has links)
Chinese-American adolescents were compared with the major group in the
United States (European-American adolescents) in negotiating self-concepts related with
autonomy and connectedness. Senses of autonomy and connectedness were evaluated by
examining adolescents' cultural value orientations (individualism and collectivism),
parent-adolescent relationships (decision-making styles and power perception), and
relations between the two constructs. Participants included 56 first- or second-generation
Chinese-American adolescents (18.5% of first-generation and 81.5% of secondgeneration)
and 45 European-American adolescents, accompanied with their mothers (47
Chinese-American mothers and 42 European-American mothers).
In terms of cultural value orientations, Chinese- and European-Americans' selfconcepts
were consistently oriented towards collectivism more than individualism in
adolescents and mothers. With regard to parent-adolescent relationships, Chinese-
American adolescents have identified with the dominant culture to show similar desires
of being autonomous as European-American adolescents. However, Chinese-American mothers adopted more authoritarian, conservative, and inflexible parenting styles than
European-American mothers. With regard to the relations between variables of cultural
value orientations and variables of parent-adolescent relationships, the pattern of
findings was consistent with the notion that Chinese-American adolescents who
internalize highly collectivistic cultural values displayed more collectivistic
communication styles in parent-adolescent relationships than European-American
adolescents.

Parent-Adolescent Relationships: Anticipations and Dyadic Interactions During the Transition to High SchoolKear, Emily 23 August 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to examine parent-adolescent relationships during the transition to high school. Fourteen parent-adolescent dyads from two Canadian cities completed the study. At pre-transition (Time 1) and post-transition (Time 2) to high school, each dyad was video-recorded engaging in a conversation together about various topics related to the school transition. Content analysis was conducted to explore parents’ and adolescents’ pre-transition anticipations of how their relationship would be in high school. State space grid analysis was used to investigate whether there were changes in the structure or emotional content of parent-adolescent dyadic interactions between pre-transition and post-transition to high school. Results showed that parents and adolescents expressed relationship anticipations of stability, change, or uncertainty. Additionally, no statistically significant differences were found in the structure or emotional content of parent-adolescent interactions, suggesting that the high school transition does not appear to disrupt how parents and adolescents interact together. / Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)
