Os dados foram recolhidos dos arquivos do Exército Brasileiro entre as classes de 1949 e 1976. Utilizaram-se vinte por cento do total das fichas dos alistados em cada ano, sendo que os cortes foram feitos trienalmente (1949, 1952, 1976). O número total de alistados estudados foi de 12.897 conscritos. O ganho de estatura em todo o período foi de 7,3 cm. O crescimento apresentou um rápido ganho a partir da classe de 1949 até 1959 (3 cm), estabilizou-se em aproximadamente 0,3 cm por triênio, até o ano de 1970, e a partir daí voltou a um ganho acentuado (3,5 cm) até 1976. A tendência secular de crescimento foi analisada levando-se em conta três outros fatores que também foram estudados: a escolaridade, a cor e o grupo ocupacional do conscrito, na época do alistamento. Observou-se uma relação direta entre o grau de escolaridade e a estatura, em que os analfabetos eram mais baixos que os estudantes e, entre os estudantes, quanto maior sua graduação maior sua estatura. Em relação ao trabalho, quanto menor a qualificação profissional, menor a estatura. Quanto à cor, observou-se que não brancos eram mais baixos que os brancos, porém este dado não se confirmou quando foi feita uma análise levando-se em conta o mesmo grau de escolaridade e o mesmo grupo ocupacional. A tendência secular de crescimento foi positiva para todas as variáveis estudadas, sendo que n.este período a cidade de Campinas apresentou acentuado crescimento na sua qualidade de vida / Abstract: The secular trend of growth in youth conscripts of the city of Campinas, was studied in a 27 year period. The data were picked up from the files of the Brazilian Army among the classes of 1949 and 1976; Twenty percent of the total of the records was used of the enlisted in the year, of the triennial year (1949, 1952, 1955... 1976) chosen for the study. The total number of enlisted studied was 12,897 conscripts. The stature gain in the whole period was of 7.3 cm. The growth presented a fast gain starting ITom the class of 1949 up to 1959 (3 cm), it was stabilized in approximately 0.3 cm for each triennial until the year of 1970 and starting from there it returnedl to an accentuated gain (3.5 cm) up to 1976. The secular trend of growth was analyzed being taken into account three other factors that were also studied, the schooling, the ethnicity and the conscript's occupational group at that time of the enlistment. A direct relationship was observed between the schooling degree and the stature, where the illiterates were shorter than the students, and between the students higher their schooling larger they were in stature. In relation to the work, the lower their professional qualification, the shorter their stature. In relation to the ethnicity was observed that blacks were shorter than whites, but this was not confirmed when adjusting ethnicity by socioeconomic level.
