This research explored the motivations of African students to choose Hong Kong universities. This research employed a qualitative dominant, quantitative supplement approach to explore the motivations of ten African students for enrolling at universities in Hong Kong. A number of motivations were identified with academic motivation being the most important. There were also other motivations but these were on a minor scale or an individual basis. Implications of this research for university admission policy were discussed at the end of this research paper. / published_or_final_version / Education / Master / Master of Education

African international students continue to remain one of the least represented and studied groups of international students. In addition to the acculturative stress typically experienced by international students, African students inherit the marginalization of their racial/ethnic group in the United States. As such, scholars acknowledge the need for continued research into the experiences of African international students. Utilizing the Integrative Theory of Communication and Cross- Cultural Adaptation and elements of postcolonialism, this thesis explored the experiences of 10 African students in the United States. A qualitative analysis revealed that host receptivity, perceived cultural differences, expectations, and language/accents influenced intercultural communication. The challenges experienced in intercultural interactions allowed for the emergence of an intercultural identity such that the participants existed in a third space as intercultural Africans. This study was designed to compare the effects of two stress reduction programs on selected male and female Black African students, enrolled in a public two-year liberal arts college in Atlanta, Georgia. An additional purpose was to determine if significant differences existed between selected male and female Black African students in their stress levels. The participants consisted of 15 male and 18 female Black African students. The instrument used in this study for data collection was the Coping Resource Inventory (CRI). The research design for this study was quasi experimental, t-test and two-way Anova procedures were used to analyze the data. The results of the t-test at the .05 level of confidence showed significant difference between pre-and-post test results for the computerized stress reduction program.
