Processing And Characterisation Of Bulk Al2 O3 p /AIN-Al Composites By Pressureless InfiltrationSwaminathan, S 11 1900 (has links)
Al-Mg alloys were infiltrated into porous alumina preforms at temperatures greater than 950°C where significant amount of nitride forms in the matrix. The present work aims to obtain a process window for growing A1N rich composites over uniform thicknesses so that bulk fabrication of these composites could be carried out. Initial experiments were carried out in a thermo-gravimetric analyser (TGA) to establish suitable conditions for growing useful thicknesses. Al- 2wt% Mg alloy, alumina preforms of particle size 53-63μm and N2 - 2% H2 (5ppm O2) were used for the present study based on previous work carried out in the fabrication of MMCs at low temperatures. Experiments carried out in the TGA indicate that oxygen in the system has to be gettered for the growth of nitride rich composites. Infiltration heights of about 8mm were obtained using an external getter (Al - 5wt%Mg) alloy in addition to the base alloy used for infiltration.
The above process conditions were subsequently employed in a tube furnace to fabricate bulk composites and to study the effect of temperature on the volume fraction of aluminium nitride in the matrix. The volume fraction of nitride in the composite varied between 30 and 95 vol % with increase in process temperature from 950°C to 1075°C. Microstructures of these composites indicate that A1N starts to form on the particle surface and tends to grow outwards. The metal supplied through channels adjacent to the particle surface nitride until a point is reached when the composite growing from the adjacent particles meet each other and isolate the melt underneath from nitrogen thereby leading to a metal rich region underneath. Increase in temperature results in an increased nitridation rate resulting in reduced metal pocket size.
Composites fabricated at 975°C had a minor leak at the O-rings, which seal the tube. This led to infiltration under conditions of varying oxygen partial pressure leading to different nitride fractions in the composite. The above fact was confirmed by conducting an experiment with commercial purity nitrogen, which has an oxygen content of about 5000ppm. The composite had an A1N content of about 30% whereas the composite fabricated with N2 -2%H2 (5ppm oxygen) showed a nitride content of 64%. This suggests that one can vary the nitride content in the composite by varying the oxygen content in the system at a particular process temperature.
The hardness of the matrix increases with increase in process temperature from 3.5 ± 0.7 GPa at 975°C to about 9.8 ± 0.9 GPa at 1075°C. Porosity was observed in the composite processed at 1075°C. This increased porosity leads to decreased hardness though the nitride content in the composite has increased by 11%. The scatter in the data is attributed to variations in the microstructure as well as due to interference from underlying metal pockets or particles as well as due to porosity introduced in the composite at high processing temperatures.

Processing And Characterization Of B4C Particle Reinforced Al-5%Mg Alloy Matrix CompositesKhan, Kirity Bhusan 12 1900 (has links)
Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are emerging as advanced engineering materials for application in aerospace, defence, automotive and consumer industries (sports goods etc.). In MMCs, a metallic base material is reinforced with ceramic fiber, whisker or particulate in order to achieve a combination of properties not attainable by either constituent individually. Aluminium or its alloy is favoured as metallic matrix material because of its low density, easy fabricability and good engineering properties. In general, the benefits of aluminium metal matrix composites (AMCs) over unreinforced aluminium alloy are increased specific stiffness, improved wear resistance and decreased coefficient of thermal expansion. The conventional reinforcement materials for AMCs are SiC and AI2O3.
In the present work, boron carbide (B4C) particles of average size 40μm were chosen as reinforcement because of its higher hardness (very close to diamond) than the conventional reinforcement like SiC, AI2O3 etc. and of its density (2.52 g cm"3) very close to Al alloy matrix. In addition, due to high neutron capture cross-section of 10B isotope, composites containing B4C particle reinforcement have the potential for use in nuclear reactors as neutron shielding and control rod material. Al-5%Mg alloy was chosen as matrix alloy to utilize the beneficial role of Mg in improving wettability between B4C particles and the alloy melt. (Al-5%Mg)-B4C composites containing 10 and 20 vol% B4C particles were fabricated. For the purpose of inter-comparison, unreinforced Al-5%Mg alloy was also prepared and characterized. The Stir Cast technique, commonly utilized for preparation of Al-SiC, was adapted in this investigation.The Composites thus prepared was subsequently hot extruded with the objective of homogenization and healing minor casting defects. Finally the unreinforced alloy and its composites were characterized in terms of their microstructure, mechanical and thermo-physical properties, sliding wear behaviour and neutron absorption characteristics.
The microstructures of the composites were evaluated by both optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The micrographs revealed a relatively uniform distribution of B4C particles and good interfacial integrity between matrix and B4C particles.
The hot hardness in the range of 25°C to 500°C and indentation creep data in the range of 300°C to 400°C show that hot hardness and creep resistance of Al-Mg alloy is enhanced by the presence of B4C particles. Measurement of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of composites and unreinforced alloy upto 450°C showed that CTE values decrease with increase in volume fraction of reinforcement.
Compression tests at strain rates, 0.1, 10 and 100 s-1 in the temperature range 25 - 450 °C showed that the flow stress values of composites were, in general, greater than those of unreinforced alloy at all strain rates. These tests also depicted that the compressive strength increases with increase in volume fraction of reinforcements. True stress values of composites and unreinforced alloy has been found to be a strong function of temperature and strain rate. The kinetic analysis of elevated temperature plasticity of composites revealed higher stress exponent values compared to unreinforced alloy. Similarly, apparent activation energy values for hot deformation of composites were found to be higher than that of self-diffusion in Al-Mg alloy.
Tensile test data revealed that the modulus and 0.2% proof stress of composites increase with increase in volume fraction of the reinforcements. Composites containing 10%BUC showed higher ultimate tensile strength values (UTS) compared to unreinforced alloy. However, composites with 20%B4C showed lower UTS compared to that of the unreinforced alloy. This could be attributed to increased level of stress concentration and high level of plastic constraint imposed by the reinforcing jparticles or due to the presence solidification-induced defects (pores and B4C agglomerates ).
Sliding wear characteristics were evaluated at a speed of 1 m/s and at loads ranging from 0.5 to 3.5kg using a pin-on-disc set up. Results show that wear resistance of Al-5%Mg increases with the addition of B4C particles. Significant improvement in wear resistance of Al-5%Mg is achieved with the addition of 20% B4C particles. SEM examination of worn surfaces showed no pull-out of reinforcing particles even at the highest load of 3.5 kg, thus confirming good interfacial bonding between dispersed B4C particles and Al alloy matrix.
The neutron radiography data proved that (Al-5%Mg)-B4C composites possess good neutron absorbing characteristics.
From the experimental data evaluated in the "study, it may be concluded that (Al-5%Mg)-B4C composites could be a candidate material for neutron shielding and control rod application.
The enhanced elevated temperature-strength and favourable neutron absorption characteristics of these composites are strong points in favour of this material.

Phase Transformation Behavior Of Embedded Bimetallic Nanoscaled Alloy Particles In Immiscible MatricesBasha, D Althaf 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the present thesis is to understand the phase transformation behavior of embedded alloy nanoparticles embedded in immiscible matrices. Embedded alloy inclusions have been dispersed in immiscible matrix via rapid solidification method. The present work deals with synthesis of embedded particles, evolution of microstructure, morphology and crystallographic orientation relation relationships among different phases, phase transformation and phase stability behavior of embedded alloy inclusions in different matrices. In the present investigation the systems chosen are Bi-Sn and Bi-Pb in Zn matrix and Cd-Sn in Al matrix.
Chapter 1 gives the brief introduction of present work
Chapter 2 gives a brief review of nanoscale materials, various synthesis techniques, microstructure evolution, solidification and melting theories.
Chapter 3 discusses the processing and experimental techniques used for characterization of the different samples in the present work. Melt-spinning technique used to synthesize the rapidly solidified ribbons. The structural characterization is carried out using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy.
Chapter 4 illustrates the size dependent solubility and phase transformation behavior of Sn-Cd alloy nanoparticles embedded in aluminum matrix. X-ray diffraction study shows the presence of fcc Al, bct Sn, hcp Cd solid solution and hcp Cd phases. Based on Zen’s law, the amount of Sn present Cd solid solution is estimated. Using overlapped sterograms, the orientational relationships among various phases are found. Microscopy studies reveal that majority of the alloy nano inclusions exhibit a cuboctahedral shape with 111 and 100 facets and they are bicrystalline. STEM-EDS analysis shows that both phases exhibit size dependent solubility behavior and for particles size smaller than 18 nm, single phase solid solution could only be observed. Calorimetric studies reveal a depression in eutectic melting point of bimetallic particles. In situ heating studies show that melting initiates at triple line junction corner and melt first grows into the interior of the Sn rich phase of the particle and then later the melt grows into the interior of the Cd phase of the particle. During cooling first Cd phase solidifies later Sn phase solidifies and on further cooling at low temperatures entire particle transforming into complete solid solution phase particle. Size dependent melting studies show that during heating smaller particles melted first, later bigger particles melted. During cooling first bigger particle solidified later smaller particles solidified. High resolution imaging indicates presence of steps across particle-matrix interface that may get annihilated during heating. During cooling, molten particles in the size range of 16-30 nm solidify as solid solution which for molten particles greater than 30 nm solidify as biphasic particle. Insitu heating studies indicates that for solid particles less than 15 nm get dissolved in the Al matrix at temperatures at around 135°C. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies show in the first heating cycle most of the particles melt with an onset of melting of at 166.8°C which is close to the bulk eutectic temperature of Sn-Cd alooy. The heating cycle reveals that the melting event is not sharp which can be understood from in-situ microscopy heating studies. In the second and the third cycles, the onset of melting observed at still lower temperatures 164.3°C and 158.5°C .The decrease in onset melting point in subsequent heating cycles is attributed to solid solution formation of all small particles whose size range below 30 nm during cooling. cooling cycles exhibit an undercooling of 90°C with respect to Cd liquidus temperature. Thermal cycling experiments using DSC were carried out by arresting the run at certain pre-determined temperatures during cooling and reheating the sample to observe the change in the melting peak position and area under the peak. The areas of these endothermic peaks give us an estimate of the fraction of the particles solidified upto the temperature when the cycling is reversed. Based on experimental observations, a thermodynamic model is developed, to understand the solubility behavior and to describe the eutectic melting transition of a binary Sn-Cd alloy particle embedded in Al matrix.
Chapter 5 discusses the phase stability and phase transformation behavior of nanoscaled Bi-Sn alloys in Zn matrix. Bi-Sn alloys with eutectic composition embedded in Zn matrix using melt spinning technique. X-ray diffraction study shows the presence of rhombohedral Bi, pure BCT Sn and hcp Zn phases. In X-ray diffractogram, there are also other new peaks observed, whose peak positions (interplanar spacings) do not coincide either with rhombohedral Bi or bct Sn or hcp Zn. Assuming these new phase peaks belong to bct Sn rich solid solution(based on earlier work on Bi-Sn rapidly solidified metastable alloys) whole pattern fitting done on x-ray diffractogram using Lebail method. The new phase peaks indicated as bct M1(metastable phase1), bct M2(metastable phase2) phases. The amount of Bi present in M1, M2 solid solution is estimated using Zens law. Two sets of inclusions were found, one contains equilibrium bismuth and tin phases and the other set contains equilibrium bismuth and a metastable phase. In-situ TEM experiments suggest that as temperature increases bismuth diffuses into tin and becomes complete solid solution. Melting intiates along the matrix–particle interface leading to a core shell microstructure. During cooling the entire inclusion solidify as solid solution and decomposes at lower temperatures. High temperature XRD studies show that as temperature increases M1, M2 phases peaks merge with Sn phase peaks and Bi phase peak intensities slowly disappear and on further increasing temperature Sn solid solution phase peaks also disappear. During cooling diffraction studies show that first Sn solid solution phase peaks appear and later Bi phase peaks appear. But, the peaks belong to metstable phases not appeared while cooling.
Chapter 6 presents morphology and phase transformation of nanoscaled bismuth-lead alloys with eutectic (Pb44.5-Bi55.5) and peritectic (Pb70-Bi30) compositions embedded in zinc matrix. using melt spinning technique. In alloy1[ Zn-2at%(Pb44.5-Bi55.5)] inclusions were found to be phase separated into two parts one is rhombohedral Bi and the other is hcp Pb7Bi3 phase. X-ray diffraction study shows the presence of rhombohedral Bi, hcp Pb7Bi3 and hcp Zn phases in Zn-2at%(Pb44.5-Bi55.5) melt spun sample. The morphology and orientation relationships among various phases have been found. In-situ microscpy heating studies show that melt initially spreads along the matrix–particle interface leading to a core-shell microstructure. And in the core of the core-sell particles, first Bi phase melts later Pb7Bi3 phase will melt and during cooling the whole particle solidify as biphase particle with large undercooling. In-situ heating studies carried out to study the size dependent melting and solidification behavior of biphase particles. During heating smaller particles melt melt first later bigger particle will melt. In contrast, while cooling smaller particles solidifies first, later bigger particles will solidify. Detailed high temperature x-ray diffraction studies indicate there increases first Bi phase peaks disappear later Pb7Bi3 phase peaks disappear and during cooling first Pb7Bi3 phase peaks appear and later Bi phase peaks appear.
In alloy2[ Zn-2at%(Pb70-Bi30)] inclusions were found to be single phase particles. X-ray diffraction study shows the presence of hcp Pb7Bi3 and hcp Zn phases in Zn-2at%(Pb70-Bi30) melt spun sample. The crystallographic orientation relationship between hcp Pb7Bi3 and hcp Zn phases. In-situ microscpy heating studies show that melting initiates across the matrix–particle interface grows gradually into the interior of the particle. Three phase equilibrium at peritectic reaction temperature is not observed during insitu heating TEM studies. Size dependent melting point depression of single phase particles is not observed from in-situ heating studies. Detailed high temperature x-ray diffraction studies show that while heating the Pb7Bi3 phase peak intensities start decreasing after 170°C and become zero at 234°C. And during cooling Pb7Bi3 phase peaks starts appearing at 200°C and on further cooling the Pb7Bi3 phase peak intensities increase upto 150°C, below this temperature peak intensities remain constant.

Effect of Heat Treatment and Modification on Flow and Fracture Behaviour of a Newly Developed Al-Si Based Cast AlloyJoseph, Sudha January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The compression behavior of a newly developed near eutectic Al-Si based cast alloy with three different microstructures has been investigated in the present work. Microstructures with modified and unmodified Si particles and matrix with different tempers are investigated. The main objective of this work is to understand the effect of heat treatment and modification on the fracture behavior of the alloy under compression. This alloy is subjected to compressive loading at different strain rates and temperatures during the operation of the engines. Hence, the effect of strain rates and temperatures is also considered. The compression tests are carried out at different strain rates from quasi-static to dynamic viz., 3*10-4 to 102/s and three different temperatures RT, 100°C and 200°C.
Microstructure of the alloys studied predominantly consists of eutectic colonies of α-Al and Si with a few interspersed α-Al dendrites. Modified alloy has more globular Si particles than unmodified alloy. Heat treated alloys are found to have hardening precipitates S’ & Al7Cu4Ni and 3-7 atomic layer thick zones, which may be precursors to S’ phase. A variety of large intermetallics, viz., plate like particles Al4.5FeSi, Chinese script like particles Al19Fe4MnSi2 and bulky phase Al3NiCu are also observed in the alloys.
Mechanical behavior of the alloys is found to be different for different microstructures. Modification improves strength and ductility. Heat treatment improves strength of the alloy at the expense of ductility. A transition in mechanical behavior is observed after a particular strain rate for all the alloys studied. This transition strain rate is dependent on heat treatment, Si particle size and temperature. This transition can be explained on the basis of dislocation-precipitate and dislocation-Si particle interactions. Work hardening behavior of the alloys depends on the matrix microstructure in the unmodified alloys, and both matrix and particles play a role in the modified alloy.
A statistically robust quantitative micro structural analysis has been carried out after compressing the samples at various strain rates and temperatures. The unique contribution of this work is the understanding of combined effect of strain rate and temperature on Si particle fracture characteristics in the alloy with different microstructures. From the fracture characteristics of Si particles, it is concluded that both dislocation pile-up mechanism and fibre loading are responsible for particle fracture in the modified alloy, whereas the fibre loading mechanism alone is sufficient to explain the particle fracture characteristics in the unmodified alloy. Si particles in the modified condition are found to cleave along the lowest surface energy planes {112} & {110} and the particles with orientations {112} & {111} are more prone to fracture.
In addition to Si particle fracture, elongated Fe rich intermetallic particles are also seen to show peculiar fracture behavior. The Al4.5FeSi intermetallics with (100) as the plane of the plate cleave along (100) planes. This is a novel finding in this work and could have immense implications on the role of Fe impurities in the fracture behavior of these alloys. Moreover, since these cleavage fractures are seen to be more than 200 microns in size (which implies that the real penny shaped crack would be even larger) their role cannot be assumed to be negligible, as was previously thought.
The load sharing between the Al matrix and eutectic Si particles are simulated by microstructure based finite element modeling. The program OOF (Object-Oriented Finite element analysis) is used to generate the finite element meshes for real microstructures with different Si morphology. The experimentally obtained stress – strain properties of the alloy is given as an input to describe the plastic behavior of the Al matrix, in the finite element simulation. This analysis helps to understand the effect of particle size, shape, orientation & clustering and matrix temper on the stress transferred to the Si particles. Combination of Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) and frequency shift, polarized micro-Raman technique is applied to validate the stress states in Si particles with {111} orientations. The stress at fracture of Si particles is also estimated from Raman technique.
Even though the alloys with different microstructures show different mechanical behavior, the sequence of fracture mechanisms is found to be same for all the alloys. The failure occurs in three stages: cracking of Si particles at low strains, micro-crack formation along the fractured particles, micro-crack coalescence and propagation leading to final failure. Thus, the proposed analysis links various deformation mechanisms ranging from nano precipitate-dislocation interactions to micro short-fiber theory of load sharing by eutectic silicon along with coupled effect of strain rate and temperature.
In addition, negative strain rate sensitivity is also observed in the lower strain rate regimes (3*10-4, 10-3& 102/s) at RT and 100°C for all the three alloys, and serrated flow is also observed in the same strain rate and temperature regimes. Some of the features of serrated flow can be explained by the dynamic strain aging model and some other features by precipitate shearing.
