Photodynamic therapy in the head and neck / Fotokemisk behandling av tumörer inom huvud- och halsområdet

von Beckerath, Mathias January 2014 (has links)
Photodynamic therapy, PDT, is a method to diagnose and treat cancer. In PDT a sensitizer is administered to the patient and this sensitizer is accumulated in tumors. If the sensitizer-containing tumor is subjected to a laser of a specific wavelength the tumor is fluorescing allowing diagnostics. If other wavelengths are used a process involving reactive oxygen species and singlet oxygen is started and the tumor cells are killed. This process thus requires oxygen as well. This thesis investigates how UV-induced damage of the skin and different physiological factors of the skin influences the uptake of 5- aminolevulinic acid, ALA, and its conversion to the active sensitizer protoporphyrin IX, PpIX. It shows that UV-induced damage affects both the uptake and production of PpIX. UV-induced damage lowers the PpIX produced after ALA application both if the damage is acute and in chronically UV-affected skin. The PpIX production differs inter and intra individually. When looking how different physiological factors affect the PpIX production after topically applied ALA the thesis shows that an increase of temperature increases the production. No correlation between the formation of PpIX and the density of hair follicles was found and a weak correlation was seen comparing the epidermal and total dermal thickness and PpIX production The thesis also shows how PDT is used in treating laryngeal malignancies. It shows that it is possible to cure laryngeal tumors (both squamous cell carcinomas and sarcomas) using PDT primarily, and that the cure rate as well as outcome of voice and patient safety is comparable to the conventional treatment modalities. PDT can also be used as a function and organ sparing treatment for recurring laryngeal cancers, both squamous cell carcinomas and sarcomas.

Problems of eighteen adopted children and eighteen natural children, Jefferson County, Alabama, Mental Health Clinic, January, 1955 through November, 1960

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of the study is to describe and compare the presenting and the underlying problems of eighteen adopted children and eighteen natural children seen in the Jefferson County Mental Health Clinic from January, 1955, through November, 1960. An attempt will be made to determine whether there are significant differences observed between the problems of the two groups, either the problems which precipitated the first Clinic contact, or those which Clinic evaluation revealed, or both. Also observed will be differences, if any, in the problems of the parents of the two groups"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "June, 1961." / "Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Social Work." / Advisor: Merle M. Ala vermelha: revolução, autocrítica e repressão judicial no Estado de São Paulo (1967-1974) / Red wing: revolution, self-criticism and judicial repression in the São Paulo state (1967-1974)

Silva, Tadeu Antonio Dix 04 May 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to tell the story of the Red Wing, an organization that appeared originally as a dissidence inside the Brazilian Communist Party (PC do B) and became an autonomous party in 1966. From 1968 to 1971, it became actively involved in the Brazilian social struggle and even carried out armed actions to expropriate funds and disseminate revolutionary propaganda. The Red Wing had an unique trait that would distinguish it from other guerrilla groups operating at that time: in the heat of the armed struggle, this organization set off a self-criticism procedure focused on the very fight it was engaged on. This procedure was started in 1969 and culminated in 1974, when the organization concluded that its option for immediate armed reaction had been a mistake

Reflections Of Cultural Capital On Exchange Of Populations: The Case Of Cesme And Alacati

Aslankan, Ali 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
&ldquo / Migration&rdquo / is not a term that was totally alien for anyone throughout the history. However, Lausanne Convention of 30 January 1923 -between Greek and Turkish authorities- was a new page to conceptualize and comprise both the theoretical and practical frame of the &ldquo / population transfer&rdquo / . Thus, the problems encountered with the decision of proposing a new model of compulsory exchange of minorities resulted into social, economical, political and cultural transformation in the social space and the physical environment in the Aegean regions. This thesis, briefly, aims to re-evaluate the criteria and the manner that leads the transformation in the physical environment and the organization of the social space after the mutual exchange of populations. In this attempt, the thesis suggests an alternative way of understanding towards the evaluation of the results of population transfer by introducing Pierre Bourdieu&rsquo / s extended capital. Thus, the theoretical frame of this study is constructed by Bourdieu&rsquo / s four capitals, the multi-dimensional social space and the physical environment as its reflection. Yet, this thesis assumes that &ldquo / wars&rdquo / could be the ultimate devastation for the capital network which influentially characterizes the physical environment and this theory will be examplified by a migration period that was experienced between 1900 and 1930 in Aegean regions.

Rethinking Transformation With Tourism: The Case Of Izmir-alacati

Tezcan, Ayhan Melih 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Tourism has been supported as a development strategy by central governments for the settlements mainly located in the western and southern coasts of Turkey since 1970s. The replacement of agricultural production with tourism was not only resulted in the transformation of social and economic relations but also spatial developments in these places. This thesis is an attempt to investigate socio-economic and socio-spatial consequences of tourism policies and the positions of local people in this process in the case of izmir-Ala&ccedil / ati. Qualitative data gathering methods (in-depth interviews, participant observations etc.) are used in this study in order to obtain necessary information about the research area. The findings of the study indicated that local people, new comers and migrant workers whose positions are determined according to their ownership of different forms of capital in social space which determine their success or failure in the tourism field have been influenced in different ways from this process. For instance, most of local people are the losers of this process as a result of lack necessary forms of capital in tourism field and mismatch between their historically constituted systems of dispositions (habitus) and tourism field. In the conclusion part, it is emphasized that there is the need for a comprehensive approach to tourism issue and the impacts of different policy implementations to the coastal areas should be taken into consideration by decision-makers in order to achieve more egalitarian development strategies for local communities.
