Previous issue date: 2013 / Resumo: Reconhecendo a complexidade das concepções e as diferenças entre as várias expressões que se inscrevem no conjunto das manifestações e idéias contempladas pelo Romantismo, neste trabalho, nos interessa destacar alguns traços que vão influenciar de modo marcante os trabalhos de Alexander von Humboldt. Assim, tentaremos entender a dualidade de seu pensamento: a postura racionalista e o pensamento 'sensível'; acreditando ser a compreensão desta relação essencial para o entendimento do trabalho científico desenvolvido por Humboldt. Neste sentido, é objetivo central analisar o pensamento de Alexander von Humboldt a partir da sua relação com a frühromantik de modo a encontrar em seus textos afinidades com esta experiência romântica alemã. Como aporte metodológico escolheu-se utilizar as concepções desenvolvidas por Timothy Lenoir e Hans-Georg Gadamer. A Hermenêutica filosófica de Hans-Georg Gadamer é capaz de, para além da superficialidade, tornar compreensível, o sentido de determinado objeto de estudo. Já na obra de Timothy Lenoir, o pensamento que nos interessa são suas análises sobre a instituição da ciência como produção cultural / Abstract: Recognizing the complexity of the concepts and the differences among the various expressions that fall into all the events and ideas contemplated by Romanticism, we highlight, in this paper, some features that will markedly influence the works of Alexander von Humboldt. So we will try to understand the duality of his thought: the rationalist attitude and the 'sensitive' thinking, this being essential to understanding the scientific work developed by Humboldt. In this sense, our central aim is to analyze Alexander von Humboldt's thought from his relationship with Frühromantik to find in his writing affinities with this German romantic experience. As methodological approach we have chosen the concepts developed by Timothy Lenoir and Hans-Georg Gadamer. Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics is capable of, beyond superficiality, giving an understanding to the meaning of a particular object of study. M.A. / Even at a superficial glance there seems to be remarkable similarities between the "Border trilogy" of the American author Cormac McCarthy and the work of the Afrikaans author Alexander Strachan. The last three novels by McCarthy, All the Pretty Horses (1992), The Crossing (1994) and Cities of the Plain (1999), are referred to as the "Border trilogy". The first three novels by Strachan are also sometimes referred to as a "trilogy". Frontiers/borders are important in the novels under discussion: The Crossing (1994), Die jakkalsjagter (1990) and Die werfbobbejaan (1994). The Crossing is the second novel of the 'Border trilogy". The title of Strachan's fist work is 'n Wereld sonder grense ("A world without borders"). In The Crossing tracking a wolf plays an important role while Die jakkalsjagter is about hunting a jackal. Die werfbobbejaan is about hunting down a baboon. Both McCarthy's and Strachan's works have been compared to the Western (films/novels dealing with the cowboys of North America). These superficial similarities seem to invite further comparison. The following themes are present in both authors' works and are compared in this study: The world can never be known The world is incomprehensible. It is constantly changing and always out of reach. The world is like "a snowflake" and like "breath" and cannot be held, because it only exists in people's hearts. The world is also incomprehensible in Strachan's work, because all certainties are undermined. Khera cannot understand Zuhiland in the same "logical" way that she could understand her world in Cape Town. The strange stories told by the people in Zululand (izinganekwane) make her aware of supernatural powers. Nothing can really be known about the world. The story that the witness tells becomes the world All objects are without meaning unless their stories are known. Truth is only to be found in narration. The world exists in narration. Therefore "the witness is all". Free will and predetermination The view of the world and our destiny in the world in The Crossing is compared with the view of the world in Die jakkalsjagter and Die werfbobbejaan. There is not one final answer to the question of determinism and free will in The Crossing. On the one hand it seems that history happens according to a predetermined plan of God. On the other hand it seems that human beings can make decisions and be in control. In this novel we find the idea that the future and the past can only be known as it exists in the present. The Strachan novels, Die jakkalsjagter en Die werfbobbejaan, reflect a certain determinism. Everything heads towards a final showdown with the death of the old man in the sod house. Khera's actions are predetermined. Things happen without her intention. The importance of stories is found in all three novels under discussion, The Crossing, Die jakkalsjagter and Die werfbobbejaan. "Things separate from their stories have no meaning. They are only shapes. Of a certain size and color. A certain weight. When their meaning has become lost to us they no longer have even a name. The story on the other hand can never be lost from its place in the world for it is that place" (Crossing: 142-143). The importance of the story is that it gives meaning to the things. All stories are the same story. The izinganekwane could be parallelled to the corrido (Spanish tales). Both are part of a hostile country, a different language and both are old tales that seem to determine the future.

This thesis presents the first steps towards a critical edition of the ‘De podagra’ (‘On Gout’), a pre-Gariopontean treatise excerpted from the Latin translation of the Greek ‘Therapeutica’ by Alexander of Tralles. From information collated, from manuscripts and printed texts, from four textual traditions, the Greek ‘Therapeutica’, the Latin Alexander, the ‘De podagra’, and Gariopontus’ ‘Passionarius’, a provisional Latin text of the ‘De podagra’ has been produced which looks forward to the last of these traditions, Gariopontus’ ‘Passionarius’. A full English translation of the ‘De podagra’ is given. The footnotes to the provisional Latin text of the ‘De podagra’ serve to illustrate the textual tradition and highlight points of relevance for the content of the text itself. These footnotes also contain information of significance to the reconstruction of each of the other three traditions. An appendix of ‘materia medica’ and an ‘index uerborum’ are included.

Pope's Treatment of Theobald and Cibber in the DunciadGardner, Marlene K. (Marlene Kortage) 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to investigate Pope's treatment of Lewis Theobald and Colley Cibber in their roles as the king of dunces in the Dunciad. After an introductory chapter that treats the battles between Pope and Theobald and Pope and Cibber, the second chapter gives a short factual biography of Theobald emphasizing the events relating to his battle with Pope. The third chapter analyzes the caricature of Theobald in the Dunciad Variorum, showing its variations from fact. By comparing Theobald and Cibber, the fourth chapter investigates the extent and effectiveness of the changes made in the Dunciad of 1743 to accommodate the change from Theobald to Cibber as the king of dunces. This paper attempts to demonstrate that Theobald and Cibber were treated unfairly by Pope, whose decision to enthrone both was based on a desire for personal revenge.
