Transdutor híbrido para medidas susceptométricas e ultrassônicas simultaneamente / Hybrid transducer for susceptométricas and ultrasonic measures simultaneously.Bruno, Alexandre Colello 26 March 2010 (has links)
This work describes the construction and characterization of a new transducer dedicated to the susceptometrics and ultrasonic measurements of samples labeled with magnetic particles. This transducer, called magneto-acoustic, consists of a hybrid system formed by the junction of an Alternating Current Biosusceptometer (ACB) and an ultrasonic transducer. Its basic operation principle is the simultaneous measurement of the magnetization and the internal structure micro-vibrations of a medium labeled with magnetic particles when excited by an external alternating magnetic field generated by the ACB excitation coils. In vitro measurements were performed to support the prototype development and characterization presented in this work. The measurement technique employing this hybrid transducer was called vibromagnetoacoustography. The samples consisted of fluid medium labeled with magnetic tracers (ferrite micro particles of diameter ranging from 30 m and 70 m). It was evaluated the system response dependence with different physical parameters such as: base material viscosity in which ferromagnetic particles was mixed; the particles concentration in the base material; the oscillation frequency of the magnetic field excitation; the voltage applied on magnetizing coils and the distance between sample and transducers. The magneto-acoustic transducer response showed a better signal to noise ratio for magnetization frequency around 200 Hz and a 4% ferrite concentration. Above this concentration the base material viscosity changed disrupting the measurements. The responses of susceptometer and Doppler ultrasound have a linear dependence with the applied voltage level in the magnetizing coils and an quasi linear dependence with low ferromagnetic particles concentrations (4%). A repeatability test was also performed to the prototype which indicated a deviation of 0.94% and 0.25% in the Doppler and susceptometric measurements, respectively. The vibration measurement of ferromagnetic micro-particles performed in vitro, using a Doppler transducer, showed high sensitivity to low ferromagnetic material concentrations (~1%) immersed in a fluid medium.

Performance and parameter prediction of large synchronous machines from physical dimensionsHeberle, David D. 03 November 1993 (has links)
A project funded by the Southern California Edison (SCE) Company, Research
Center of Irwindale, California, has supported the development of a performance and
parameter prediction software program for use during the refurbishment of large
synchronous machines, turbine generators, and synchronous condensers. The computer
program was developed for SCE to allow user friendly input of a machine's physical
parameters such as pole/field/winding/stator dimensions, type of steel, and other related
information in order to calculate the machine's reactances, time constants, and performance
curves. The program also allows some degree of design calculation to be performed in
order to meet certain design criteria where appropriate.
The theory behind the calculations upon which the electrical calculations are built is
obtained primarily from literature published in the early 1950's. Since that time, however,
machine design has progressed into ever larger generators, most often in the hundreds of
Megawatt range with some units exceeding one thousand Megawatts. This size increase has
established the practice of winding the stator coils into parallel circuits to maintain
acceptable flux and generated voltage levels. These design practices justify a re-examination
of the traditional methods used to calculate a machine's reactances and time constants.
Accordingly, the use of parallel circuits in the stator winding and their effect on machine
parameters has not, to this author's knowledge, been addressed in public literature. These
issues are exam fled and modifications to the traditional formulas have been derived for the
reactances along with the process of carrying out the calculations on a per pole basis.
In addition, the calculation of the parameter and performance equations of a machine
are suitable for implementation on a computer due to the length and often iterative
calculation procedures. The procedures used to calculate the capability and saturation curves
directly from the machine's physical dimensions are developed. During development of the
program a forty megawatt generator was measured in order to test and debug the program.
Results of this test case are presented and compared to test values obtained at the time of
the generator's installation. / Graduation date: 1994

The role of BDNF in the injured/regenerating sensory neuronGeremia, Nicole Marie 22 December 2005
Peripheral nerve injury induces a robust regenerative state in sensory neurons that includes elevated expression of injury/regeneration-associated genes. The molecular signal(s) underlying the transition to the regenerating state are largely unknown. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is the sole identified neurotrophin that is upregulated in sensory neurons following peripheral nerve injury. As members of the neurotrophin family exert a profound influence on the intact phenotype of sensory neurons, I hypothesize that injury-associated alterations in BDNF expression play a similar role in the injured/regenerating response. Antagonizing endogenous BDNF with a function-blocking antibody prevented increases in injury/regeneration-associated gene expression and decreased the growth capabilities of the injured sensory neurons. However, BDNF was not important for maintaining this cell body response in injured neurons. The elevation of BDNF expression in injured sensory neurons either through intrathecal infusion or electrical stimulation was associated with increased injury/regeneration-associated gene expression in a dose dependent manner and the latter corresponded to increased sensory axonal regeneration. Though BDNF was able to induce and enhance the intrinsic cell body response of injured sensory neurons, exogenous BDNF was not sufficient to induce an injury phenotype in intact sensory neurons. Thus, additional signals are likely induced by the injury response. In conclusion, BDNF plays a critical role in inducing the regenerative state in sensory neurons following injury and strategies aimed at elevating levels of BDNF available to the injured sensory neuron during the inductive phase improve the cell body response.

Finite element based rotor design optimization for the brushless doubly-fed machineSalim, Mohamed Ali, 1968- 13 April 1993 (has links)
Brushless Doubly-Fed Machines have potential benefits in variable speed
generation and adjustable speed drive applications by combining a robust machine
structure with a reduced power converter rating. While recent work has demonstrated
feasibility, steady-state performance has not been optimized. The nature of doubly-fed
operation causes rotor currents of varying, relatively high frequency. Moreover, the rotor
structure deviates from conventional squirrel cages. Consequently, induction machine
rotor bar geometries need to be carefully examined and refined for applicability in the
doubly-fed system.
The present thesis uses finite element analysis to investigate alternative rotor bar
design. Two-dimensional finite element analysis is used to investigate basic rotor bar
characteristics. Interface with a detailed simulation program enables investigation of
assembled rotors, otherwise a three-dimensional analysis problem.
Rotor bar geometries for a high speed alternator are investigated. Bar shapes are
kept simple to allow manufacturing of the rotor in the absence of the-casting equipment.
Rotor prototypes are constructed using custom, laser-cut laminations and experimental
results for the alternator verify improved line-to-shaft efficiencies over conventional rotor
geometries as well as off-the-shelf alternators. / Graduation date: 1994

A low cost AC motor drive for battery powered applicationsWiley, Brian 19 August 1993 (has links)
Environmental concerns have renewed the interest in electric vehicles. To gain
widespread use, electric vehicles will also have to offer good performance and be
reasonably priced. AC drive systems using modern semiconductors can provide
efficient operation at the required power levels, but their cost at present is still too
high. This paper discusses the development of an AC induction motor drive system
which potentially lowers cost by using a digital controller. The controller is shown to
implement a high performance field-oriented control, while keeping a low parts count
by maximizing use of interface circuits which are integrated onto the microprocessor
chip. Cost is further reduced by designing the system to reuse motor control
components for battery charging and eliminate the need for external circuits.
Experimental results are presented for a low power prototype system. / Graduation date: 1994

In this diploma thesis, a Power Inverter in order to connect an Alternating Current-Photovoltaic (AC-PV module) to the low voltage grid is analyzed, designed and manufactured. The work was carried out in the Laboratory of Electrical and Mechanical Energy Conversion at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Polytechnic School, University of Patras, Greece. At first, some data and information concerning the photovoltaic technology are presented as well as the connection modes of a PV system or module. Secondly, the operation and structure of the inverter is described. Specifically, a differential output boost inverter is examined, the title of which is derived from its ability to produce an output voltage larger than the input voltage. In fact, this converter consists of two boost dc-dc converters, the combined operation of which achieves the desirable operation of the inverter. The nominal power of the inverter is chosen to be equal to 250W. Depending on the expected values of the currents and voltages, as well as on the ripple voltages of the capacitors and the ripple currents of the inductors, the component values were calculated. The following step was to simulate the operation of the converter under different control techniques. The only control method with satisfying results which was eventually applied to the inverter was the sliding mode control, so it is extensively described. Due to its requirements, this control technique was implemented without using a microcontroller, but only using analog integrated circuits. The design and implementation of the inverter is then described along with the selected components and some individual circuits. Finally, the results of the conducted experiments are presented, the good operation of the setup is confirmed and the related conclusions are derived.
