Biodiesel: análise e dimensionamento da rede logística no Brasil usando programação linear. / Biodiesel: supply chain analyses and facilities location using mixed integer linear programming.

Éden de Rezende Carvalho 18 September 2008 (has links)
In this research a mixed integer linear programming model was developed to locate facilities related to the biodiesel supply chain in Brazil, making possible to evaluate the oleaginous production potential, as well as the most promising regions to became the location of the several levels of the biodiesel chain, in accordance to the biodiesel future demand. The model incorporates four levels of the productive chain (agricultural phase, extraction of oil, biodiesel production and demand points). The model parameters were estimated based on market information available (base of december/2007). The application of the model to several sceneries led to the indication of the most promising regions for production of the oleaginous, the used oleaginous ones, the volume of production in each place and, finally, the location and scale of oil and biodiesel factories. Sensibility analyses were conducted to verify the results related to parameters uncertainty. The research contains suggestion and recommendations for improvement of the model.

Análise por cromatografia gasosa das emissões de compostos orgânicos voláteis provenientes de motores de combustão interna / Analysis of the emissions of volatile organic compounds from the internal combustion engines by gas chromatography

Sérgio Lucas Ferreira 27 March 2006 (has links)
Air pollution\'s is one of the most serious environment problems concerning human animals and vegetables life. The increase of concentration of atmospheric pollutants is generated mainly due to increasing urbanization and the increase on the number of motor vehicles. The emissions caused by vehicles contain several toxic substances as: carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and others substances ending quite negative effect on health. Considering this situation, this study described the procedures of analysis of pollutant gases emitted by engines, such as volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethilbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene) by using High Resolution Gas Chromatography (HRGC) applied to diesel, B10 mixture, and ethanol emissions analysis. Considering the use of diesel and B10 as fuel, a comparative studies has been performed for fossil fuel (diesel) and biodiesel by varying some parameters of the engines. Also, determination of these toxic substances in the emissions of engines had been made using ethanol as fuel. In the emissions of this type of engine varying the parameters as mixture quality and rotation had been detected benzene at concentration values 0,129 &#177 0,021, 0,124 &#177 0,020 e 0,132 &#177 0,007 &#956g/mL (rich, stoichiometry and lean mixture); 0,134 &#177 0,017, 0,129 &#177 0,007 e 0,133 &#177 0,044 &#956g/mL (1700 rpm, 2200 rpm and 2700 rpm, respectively) that can be proceeding from the lubricant oil. In general, for CI engine burning diesel or B10 mixture it has been observed drastically reduction in the emissions of the aromatic compounds by using B10. Especially for benzene the reduction of concentrations occurs on the level of about 24.5%. Although, it has obtained a concentration value below 1 &#956g/mL as much as in the using diesel and B10, this reduction is, extremely significant, to being benzene a carcinogenic compound. Moreover, the addition of biodiesel to the diesel has been showed efficient in the reduction of the pollutants emissions.

Prospecção e bases de formação da demanda e oferta de etanol combustível nos Estados Unidos / Prospection and formation basis of supply and demand for ethanol fuel in the United States

Aline Ishikawa 03 December 2013 (has links)
Since the first oil shock in 1973, countries have made efforts to reduce their dependence on the product, mainly produced in politically unstable regions. The United States is the world\'s largest consumer of the fuel, and about 70 % is allocated to transport. Since the late 70s, the U.S. government has encouraged the use of ethanol as a partial substitute for gasoline. However, the growth of the biofuel arose controversy because the raw material used for the domestic production is corn, which could be affecting the supply of the grain for food production. Thus, it was approved in 2007 the RFS2, a legislation that requires mandatory use of increasing volumes of ethanol until 2022, but limits production from corn. Investments in alternative fuels research started to focus on the development of second generation ethanol, which uses cellulosic material as feedstock. Its technical feasibility has been confirmed, but improvements are still needed in the production process so that the product can be offered on a commercial scale. On the other hand, Brazil has a mature ethanol industry and is also doing research on second-generation technology. If successful, the country plans to export the surplus production, and the United States is a market of interest. The objective of this thesis is to assist the assessment of the United States needs to import ethanol from other countries, which may create an opportunity for Brazil. The logical-intuitive approach of scenario building - focused on qualitative aspects - was used to study the market for fuel ethanol in the United States until the year 2022. Data collection was done through literature review, focused on international articles. The U.S. energy policy and developments in the technology of second generation ethanol were identified as the major uncertainties that are shaping the future of the market under study. Four scenarios were generated from these two uncertainties and named as \"Prodigal Son\", \"Hopeful parents\", \"Independent Son\" and \"Deprecated Son\". It was concluded that while the U.S. government continues to encourage the consumption of ethanol, there are good opportunities to export the Brazilian biofuel. The largest volumes are expected in \"Hopeful parents\". On the other hand, if other energy alternatives are prioritized, our exports can reduce substantially, and sales volume will depend on the price of our product relative to theirs and gasoline.

An analysis of the influence of phosphorus poisoning on the exhaust emission after treatement systems of light-duty diesel vehicles

Toral del Rio, Maria Isabel January 2007 (has links)
Climate change has become a discussion topic of exponentially increasing urgency and importance amoung world leaders of all disciplines. These changes are brought about by the emission of so-called Greenhouse gases from various human activities. The primary cause of CO2 emissions is the burning of the Earth’s supply of nonrenewable natural fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas. The world first agreed on the prevention of “dangerous” climatic changes at the Earth Summit in 1992. The Kyoto Protocol of 1997 was the first step toward protection of the atmosphere and prescribes restrictions on emission pollutants. Since then the vehicle gas emissions are being controlled by means of different gas emissions norms, like the European Union Norm in Europe. The automotive manufacturers and suppliers are collectively working on reducing overall vehicle emissions. They are focusing on several different emission limiting possibilities, for example improved engine design, special fuel development and exhaust gas treatment systems. The exhaust gas treatment process requires continuous controlling and management of the exhaust gas emissions while driving a vehicle. Certain factors such as high emission temperatures have a negative influence on the life span of these systems. Their functionality and durability is also known to be reduced by the presence of chemical poisoning species like sulphur, phosphorus, zinc and calcium. The chemical poisoning species are produced during combustion of fuel and engine oil. They are therefore contained in the exhaust emissions and can poison the catalyst when passing over it. Phosphorous poisoning is particularly problematic and should be reduced considerably. This study involves the investigation of the phosphorous poisoning process and aims to provide clarity regarding the influences of different fuel and oil compositions on the severity of the process. Engine oil and biodiesel are two major sources of phosphorous poisoning. The phosphorus contained in biodiesel fuel is a natural component and can be minimized during the refining procedure. In contrast to others studies, the biodiesel fuel used during this project was SME (Soya Methyl Ester) with a 20% biodiesel content. This choice of fuel was made because of the increasingly important role that this type of biodiesel is playing in the European market and the future tendency to increase the percentage of biodiesel in the mixture with standard diesel fuel. The phosphorus contained in engine oil is a necessary additive to retain the antioxidant and anti-wear properties of the oil. This study examined the poisoning influences from the most commonly used phosphorus containing oil additive, Zinc Dithiophosphates (ZDDP), as well as a Zn-free, phosphorus containing anti-wear oil additive. This formulation provides information about the phosphorus poisoning process as caused by the engine oil in the absence of Zn in the oil additives. The results show how the phosphorus content in biodiesel fuel affects the functionality of the exhaust gas treatment systems and the importance of reducing the permitted content of phosphorus contained in the fuel. Reducing the phosphorus content in the fuel will conserve the functionality of the exhaust gas treatment systems during their operational life and thereby protect the environmental from emission pollutants. It also provides insight into the differences in the poisoning processes when the phosphorus deposited on the catalyst comes from biodiesel fuel and when it comes from the engine oil. Finally the results also illustrate the influence of different phosphorous forms contained in engine oil additives on the catalyst poisoning process. This information could be used for the development of new oil additive formulations.

Alternativní paliva v dopravě / Alternative fuels for transport

Běláčková, Adéla January 2008 (has links)
The thesis Alternative fuels for transport is dealing with the topic of economic competitiveness and environmental advantages of alternative fuels in comparison to classical oil fuels in transport. First, the main transport related problems are discussed in detail, including the dependency on oil, emissions from transport and their impact on human health and the environment. Then, the different types of alternative fuels are presented, including the legal framework, possibility of tax exemption and subsidy financing. The comparison of emissions of alternative and classical fuels follows the logic of the whole life cycle of a fuel, using the Well-to-Wheel analysis as method. Emissions of greenhouse gases and emissions of pollutants of local importance are observed. The cost comparison is based on experience in public bus transport in the Czech Republic. Fixed, variable and total costs are compared for classical diesel, biodiesel, natural gas, LPG, hydrogen and an electric vehicle. The purpose of the study is to decide which of the alternative fuels represents a cost competitive option in comparison to classical diesel and also provides a reduction in total emissions. The results of the study are designed to help Krkonošské Metro Association to choose a suitable alternative fuel for a project in rail transport.

Autoignition and reactivity studies of renewable fuels and their blends with conventional fuels

Issayev, Gani 02 1900 (has links)
Population growth and increasing standards of living have resulted in a rapid demand for energy. Our primary energy production is still dominated by fossil fuels. This extensive usage of fossil fuels has led to global warming, environmental pollution, as well as the depletion of hydrocarbon resources. The prevailing difficult situation offers not only a challenge but also an opportunity to search for alternatives to fossil fuels. Hence, there is an urgent need to explore environmentally friendly and cost-effective renewable energy sources. Oxygenates (alcohols, ethers) and ammonia are among the potential renewable alternative fuels of the future. This thesis investigates the combustion characteristics of promising alternative fuels and their blends using a combination of experimental and modelling methodologies. The studied fuels include ethanol, diethyl ether, dimethyl ether, dimethoxy methane, γ-valerolactone, cyclopentanone, and ammonia. For the results presented in this thesis, the studies may be classified into three main categories: 1. Ignition delay time measurements of ethanol and its blends by using a rapid compression machine and a shock tube. The blends studied include binary mixtures of ethanol/diethyl ether and ternary mixtures of ethanol/diethyl ether/ethyl levulinate. A chemical kinetic model has been constructed and validated over a wide range of experimental conditions. The results showed that a high-reactivity fuel, diethyl ether, may be blended with a low-reactivity fuel, ethanol, in varying concentrations to achieve the desired combustion characteristics. A ternary blend of ethanol/diethyl ether/ethyl levulinate may be formulated from a single production stream, and this blend is shown to behave similarly to a conventional gasoline. 2. Ignition delay time and flame speed measurements of ammonia blended with combustion promoters by utilizing a rapid compression machine and a constant volume spherical reactor. The extremely low reactivity of ammonia makes it unsuitable for direct use in many combustion systems. One of the potential strategies to utilize ammonia is to blend it with a combustion promoter. In this work, dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, and dimethoxy methane are explored as potential promoters of ammonia combustion. Chemical kinetic models were developed and validated in the high temperature regime by using flame speed data and in the low-to-intermediate temperature regime by using ignition delay time data. The results showed that even a small addition (~ 5 – 10%) of combustion promoters can significantly alter ammonia combustion, and diethyl ether was found to have the highest propensity to enhance ammonia ignition and flame propagation. Blends of combustion promoters with ammonia can thus be utilized in modern downsized turbo-charged engines. 3. Octane boosting and emissions minimization effects of next generation oxygenated biofuels. These studies were carried out using a cooperative fuel research engine operating in a homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) mode. The oxygenated fuels considered here include γ-valerolactone and cyclopentanone. The results showed that γ-valerolactone and cyclopentanone can be effective additives for octane boosting and emission reduction of conventional fuels. Overall, the results and outcomes of this thesis will be highly useful in choosing and optimizing alternative fuels for future transportation systems.

Právní aspekty využívání alternativních paliv v dopravě / Legal aspects of alternative fuels' use in transport

Straka, Jakub January 2021 (has links)
Legal aspects of alternative fuels' use in transport Abstract What connects solar energy, palm oil and the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline? All these topics have one common denominator, i.e. alternative fuels. This group of fuels, which is represented by electricity, hydrogen or biomethane, has the ambition to replace fossil fuels and reduce the negative environmental effects of the sectors of the economy where fossil fuels are used - in transport and energy. This thesis focuses on the transport sector and pursues two lines. The first part of the text examines, by using the example of biofuels, natural gas and electricity, whether and to what extent alternative fuels fulfill the purpose of the alternative in relation to oil-based fuels. The principle of energy security and the principle of sustainable development in its environmental and economic aspects are used as a benchmark. In the second part, this thesis pays attention to legal instruments that determine the future of alternative fuels. Specifically, emission limits for passenger cars and light-duty vehicles and financial support for alternative fuels at all stages of their life cycle are analyzed. The purpose of this work is to capture the momentum of the ongoing legislative development in the field of alternative fuels, to try to...
