Avaliação posicional de dados altimétricos gerados por diferentes sistemas de varredura a laser terrestre: estudo de caso

As utilizações de dados altimétricos, nesse estudo analisados a partir de modelos digitais de terreno (MDT), são as mais variadas assim como as técnicas de obtenção desse tipo de dado. Pode-se obter MDT por radar de abertura sintética que é utilizado para o levantamento de grandes áreas e de difícil acesso. Também pode-se gerar esse tipo de dado por Fotogrametria, por Topografia utilizando estação total com apoio GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). Uma tecnologia mais atual para a obtenção de dados altimétricos é a utilização de tecnologia Lidar (light detection and ranging) que consiste na medição de distância e coordenadas através de um pulso eletromagnético que interage com os alvos. O produto básico dos sistemas que utilizam a tecnologia Lidar, seja em plataformas aéreas ou terrestres, é denominado de nuvem de pontos. Essas nuvens de pontos possuem coordenadas tridimensionais (X, Y e Z) referenciadas ao centro de fase do sensor. Nesse estudo foram realizados experimentos com dois sistemas de varredura a laser terrestre. O primeiro é um sistema de varredura modelo Optech Ilris 3D e outro Faro Focus 3D, nesse estudo denominados de SVLT Optech e SVLT Faro. Assim, o objetivo desse trabalho é estimar a qualidade posicional dos dados altimétricos gerados por dois SVLT. Os estudos foram executados em dois experimentos. No primeiro experimento foram realizados escaneamentos num campo de calibração. Nessa etapa foi gerada uma nuvem de pontos de cada sistema de varredura, e esses dados foram georreferenciados e a partir de pontos de checagem medidos no mesmo e assim foi estimada o controle de qualidade posicional. No segundo experimento, os dois SVLT foram utilizados para efetuar um levantamento topográfico planialtimétrico em um percurso de aproximadamente um quilômetro. Os dados gerados pelos SVLT passaram por um processo de registro, que consiste na junção de pares de nuvens de pontos, e foram georreferenciados a partir de pontos de controle medidos no terreno. Nesse percurso foram realizados circuitos de nivelamento cujos vértices foram utilizados para se estimar o controle de qualidade posicional, planimétrico e altimétrico, das nuvens de pontos oriundas dos dois sistemas de varredura. Assim, após a realização de testes estatísticos, no primeiro experimento, obteve-se valores de acurácia altimétrica de 1,5 cm para o SVLT Faro e de 1,3cm para o SVLT Optech e no segundo experimento acurácia altimétrica de 1,9 cm para o SVLT Faro e de 5,9 cm para o SVLT Optech. / The uses of altimetric data, in this study approached from digital terrain models (TDM) are the most varied as well as the techniques for getting this type of data. It can be get DTM by synthetic aperture radar that is used for surveying wide areas and with difficult access. As well it can be this type of data by Photogrammetry, by conventional Topography using total station with GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) support. A more actual technology for obtaining altimetric data is the use of light detection and ranging technology, which consists of measuring distance and coordinates through an electromagnetic pulse that interacts with the targets. The basic product of the systems that use the technology lidar, be it in aerial or terrestrial platforms, is denominated a point cloud. These point clouds have three-dimensional coordinates (X, Y, and Z) referenced to phase center of the sensor. In this study, will be performed experiments with two systems of terrestrial laser scanning (STLS). One STLS of the brand Optech Ilris 3D and another of the brand Faro Focus 3D, in this study called of STLS Faro and STLS Optech. Therefore, the aim of this work is to estimate the positional quality of digital terrain models generated by these two STLS. The studies were executed in two experiments. In the first experiment, scans has been made on a calibration wall. The generated point clouds were georeferenced and from the checkpoints measured in this calibration wall, the positional quality of these data was estimated. In the second experiment, the two STLS were has been made a planialtimetric topographic survey of a course of approximately one kilometer. In this course a leveling network was created and the vertices of this network were used to estimate the positional quality control of the points clouds from the two STLS. Therefore, after realization statistical tests, in the first experiment, it was obtained altimetric accuracy values of 1.5 cm for the STLS Faro and 1.3 cm for the STLS Optech were obtained and in the second experiment, the altimeter accuracy of 1.9 cm for the STLS Faro and 5.9 cm for the Optech STLS.

Addressing the Problem of Land Motion at Tide Gauges

Estimation of global mean sea level change has become an area of interest for scientists in recent decades because of its importance as an indicator of climate change. Climate models predict varying degrees of change in global temperature and global sea level over the next 100 years. One way to check the validity of the models is to estimate sea level change over the last century and constrain the models to match these estimates. Traditionally, sea level change estimates have been calculated using long time series from tide gauges. There are some disadvantages to this approach however, since tide gauges have limited spatial coverage and make measurements relative to a land reference point that may be undergoing uplift or subsidence. Satellite altimetry has also been used in recent years to estimate sea level changes, but these measurements are subject to drift errors and must be calibrated. Mitchum (1998, 2000) has developed a method using the global network of tide gauges to calibrate altimeters that enables estimation of sea level change with a precision of 0.4 mm/yr. Errors in the estimates arise from a variety of sources, but the error of primary concern is that due to land motion at the tide gauge stations. In the present study we will investigate ways to improve the land motion estimate and thus reduce the error.

Applications of CryoSat-2 swath radar altimetry over Icelandic ice caps and Patagonian ice fields

Satellite altimetry has been traditionally used in the past few decades to measure elevation of land ice, quantify changes in ice topography and infer the mass balance of large and remote areas such as the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. Radar altimetry is particularly well suited to this task due to its all-weather year-round capability of observing the ice surface. However, monitoring of ice caps and ice fields - bodies of ice with areas typically smaller than ~ 10,000 km2 - has proven more challenging. The large footprint of a conventional radar altimeter and coarse ground track coverage are less suited to observing comparatively small regions with complex topography. Since 2010, the European Space Agency’s CryoSat-2 satellite has been collecting ice elevation measurements over ice caps and ice fields with its novel radar altimeter. CryoSat-2’s smaller inter-track spacing provides higher density of observations compared to previous satellite altimeters. Additionally, it generates more accurate measurements because (i) the footprint size is reduced in the along-track direction by means of synthetic aperture radar processing and (ii) interferometry allows to precisely locate the the across-track angle of arrival of a reflection from the surface. Furthermore, the interferometric capabilities of CryoSat-2 allow for the processing of the delayed surface reflections after the first echo. When applied over a sloping surface, this procedure generates a swath of elevations a few km wide compared to the conventional approach returning a single elevation. In this thesis, swath processing of CryoSat-2 interferometric data is exploited to generate topographic data over ice caps and ice fields. The dense elevation field is then used to compute maps of elevation change rates at sub-kilometer resolution with the aim of quantifying ice volume change and mass balance. A number of algorithms have been developed in this work, partly or entirely, to form a complete processing chain from generating the elevation field to calculating volume and mass change. These algorithms are discussed in detail before presenting the results obtained in two selected regions: Iceland and Patagonia. Over Icelandic ice caps, the high-resolution mapping reveals complex surface elevation changes, related to climate, ice dynamics and sub-glacial, geothermal and magmatic processes. The mass balance of each of the six largest ice caps (90% of Iceland’s permanent ice cover) is calculated independently for the first time using spaceborne radar altimetry data. Between October 2010 and September 2015 Icelandic ice caps have lost a total of 5.8± 0.7 Gt a ̄1, contributing 0.016± 0.002 mm a ̄1 to eustatic sea level rise. This estimate indicates that over this period the mass balance was 40% less negative than the preceding 15 years, a fact which partly reflects the anomalous positive balance year across the Vatnaj ̈okull ice cap (~ 70% of the glaciated area) in 2014/15. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how swath processing of CryoSat-2 interferometric data allows the monitoring of glaciological processes at the catchment scale. Comparison of the geodetic estimates of mass balance against those based on in situ data shows good agreement. The thesis then investigates surface elevation change on the Northern and Southern Patagonian Ice Fields to quantify their mass balance. This area is characterized by some of the fastest flowing glaciers in the world, displaying complex interactions with the proglacial environments (including marine fjords and freshwater lakes) they often drain into. Field observations are sparse due to the inaccessibility of these ice fields and even remotely sensed data are limited, often tied to comparisons to the topography in 2000 as measured by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. Despite gaps in the spatial coverage, in particular due to the complex topography, CryoSat-2 swath radar altimetry provides insight into the patterns of change on the ice fields in the most recent period (2011 to 2017) and allows to independently calculate the mass balance of glaciers or catchments as small as 300 km2. The northern part of the Southern Patagonian ice field displays the strongest losses due to a combination between ice dynamics and warming temperatures. In contrast Pio XI, the largest glacier on this ice field and in South America, is advancing and gaining mass. Between April 2011 and march 2017, the two ice fields combined have lost an average of 21.29± 1.98 Gt a ̄1 (equivalent to 0.059± 0.005 mm a ̄1 eustatic sea level rise), 24% and 42% more negative when compared to the periods 2000-2012/14 and 1975-2000. In particular the Northern Patagonian ice field, responsible for one third of the mass loss, is losing mass 70% faster compared to the first decade of the 21st century. These results confirm the overall strong mass loss of the Patagonian ice fields, second only to glaciers and ice caps in Alaska and the Canadian Arctic, and higher than High Mountain Asia, which all extend over areas ~ 5-8 times larger (excluding glaciers at the periphery of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets).

AFFORDABLE, ALTERNATIVE TEST METHOD FOR MEETING CIVIL AVIATION REDUCED VERTICAL SEPARATION MINIMUM (RVSM) REQUIRMENTS ON MILITARY/COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / A recent Air Traffic Management (ATM) initiative has reduced certain oceanic routes from a 2,000-foot vertical separation minimum to a 1,000-foot (300 m) separation minimum between flight levels of 29,000 feet and 41,000 feet. As a result of this initiative, an aircraft transitioning from the Continental United States (CONUS) to Europe or Asia will be required to have a validated, certified altimeter reporting system within the specified tolerances. The aging military airframes are not currently Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) certified. The impact on military deployment time to foreign theatres as well as high- fuel cost makes this a high-priority DoD issue. This paper describes the test and evaluation (T&E) challenge, viable solutions and test method for meeting the RVSM requirements in an approved, affordable, and least down-time (minimal aircraft modification) manner. The test method described herein utilizes a PACER aircraft in formation with the RVSM candidate aircraft. The RVSM is just one of the many Global Air Traffic Management (GATM) requirements which must be met for military aircraft to fly within premium airspace during overseas deployment. The commercial equivalent of GATM is Communications Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM). Our focus will be on meeting the RVSM certification requirements as related to the test environment.

La mesure de la hauteur des océans, des vents de surface (fortement liés aux températures des océans), ou encore de la hauteur des vagues sont un ensemble de paramètres nécessaires à l'étude des océans mais aussi au suivi de leurs évolutions : l'altimétrie spatiale est l'une des disciplines le permettant. Une forme d'onde altimétrique est le résultat de l'émission d'une onde radar haute fréquence sur une surface donnée (classiquement océanique) et de la mesure de la réflexion de cette onde. Il existe actuellement une méthode d'estimation non optimale des formes d'onde altimétriques ainsi que des outils de classifications permettant d'identifier les différents types de surfaces observées. Nous proposons dans cette étude d'appliquer la méthode d'estimation bayésienne aux formes d'onde altimétriques ainsi que de nouvelles approches de classification. Nous proposons enfin la mise en place d'un algorithme spécifique permettant l'étude de la topographie en milieu côtier, étude qui est actuellement très peu développée dans le domaine de l'altimétrie. / After having scanned the ocean levels during thirteen years, the french/american satelliteTopex-Poséidon disappeared in 2005. Topex-Poséidon was replaced by Jason-1 in december 2001 and a new satellit Jason-2 is waited for 2008. Several estimation methods have been developed for signals resulting from these satellites. In particular, estimators of the sea height and wave height have shown very good performance when they are applied on waveforms backscattered from ocean surfaces. However, it is a more challenging problem to extract relevant information from signals backscattered from non-oceanic surfaces such as inland waters, deserts or ices. This PhD thesis is divided into two parts : A first direction consists of developing classification methods for altimetric signals in order to recognize the type of surface affected by the radar waveform. In particular, a specific attention will be devoted to support vector machines (SVMs) and functional data analysis for this problem. The second part of this thesis consists of developing estimation algorithms appropriate to altimetric signals obtained after reflexion on non-oceanic surfaces. Bayesian algorithms are currently under investigation for this estimation problem. This PhD is co-supervised by the french society CLS (Collect Localisation Satellite) (seehttp://www.cls.fr/ for more details) which will in particular provide the real altimetric data necessary for this study.

Entretanto, sinais similares são observados em dados de concentração de clorofila a obtidos através de dados na faixa espectral visível através do sensor SeaWiFs. Anomalias na concentração de clorofila que se propagam para oeste com períodos e comprimentos de onda característicos de ondas de Rossby, indicam que estas ondas induzem parte da variabilidade da produtividade primária em oceano aberto. O foco deste trabalho é o mecanismo de acoplamento físico-biológico causado pela passagem de ondas de Rossby e evidenciado pelos padrões regulares de aumento e diminuição de algas clorofiladas. Levamos em conta dois mecanismos principais: advecção vertical de nutrientes e/ou clorofila a e advecção horizontal de gradientes meridionais de clorofila a. No presente trabalho, nós investigamos esta influência através da correlação entre a anomalia da altura da superfície do mar (AASM) e do logaritmo da concentração de clorofila a (CChl). Foram estimados também a amplitude e a relação de fase entre ambos conjuntos de dados. Para tal, os dois conjuntos de dados foram interpolados numa grade regular de 1° X 1° X 9.9156 dias e selecionados com base numa máscara de continentes que exclui a presença de regiões com menos de 1000 metros de profundidade, ilhas e mares zonalmente fechados para permitir o uso de filtros digitais. Os mapas globais de ambas variáveis foram reorganizados em diagramas zonais-temporais (ou de Hovmöller) para cada grau de latitude. A cada um destes diagramas foi aplicada uma série de filtros bidimensionais de resposta impulsiva finita (FIR-2D). Estes decompõem o sinal de cada variável em bandas espectrais associadas a ondas de Rossby de período aproximado de 24, 12 e 6 meses. A estimativa da velocidade de fase (cp) é baseada no método da transformada Radon; a do período (T) e do comprimento de onda (L) é baseada no ajuste de mínimos quadrados de uma função senoidal. Correlação, fase e amplitude foram obtidas ao longo da extensão zonal das três principais bacias oceânicas (Atlântico, Índico e Pacífico) para cada grau de latitude. As latitudes selecionadas para análise apresentam diferenças nas estimativas de cp24, cp12 e cp6 baseadas na AASM e CChl estatísticamente similares com um intervalo de confiança de 95%. Foram escolhidas latitudes entre os giros subpolar e subtropical e na região central do giro subtropical em ambos hemisférios. Os resultados indicam que nas regiões entre giros oceânicos o processo de advecção horizontal de gradientes meridionais de clorofila predomina em relação ao de advecção vertical de nutrientes e/ou clorofila. Nas regiões centrais dos giros subtropicais a advecção vertical é mais propensa a acontecer em detrimento da advecção horizontal. Os resultados aqui apresentados indicam que as ondas de Rossby do primeiro modo baroclínico tem influência sobre a biomassa fitoplanctônica. Esta influência se dá por advecção horizontal ou vertical, dependendo da região oceânica. / Rossby waves of first baroclinic mode in midlatitudes were observed in sea surface height anomaly data from the TOPEX/Jason-1 radar altimeter in the past decade. Nevertheless, similar signals are observed in clorophyll a concentration estimates based on the visible part of the spectrum collected by the SeaWiFS satellite sensor. Westward propagating anomalies with periods and wavelengths characteristic of first mode baroclinic Rossby waves are evident in satellite--borne chlorophyll a concentration data and suggest that these waves are partially responsible for the primary productivity variability in open ocean. The focus of this study is the physical-biological coupling caused by the passage of Rossby waves, evident in the regular patterns of increase and decrease of chlorophyll--rich algae. We took into account two main mechanisms: vertical advection of nutrients and/or chlorophyll a and horizontal advection of the background gradient of meridional chlorophyll concentration. In this work, these mechanisms were investigated through the correlation between sea surface height anomaly (AASM) and the logarithm of the chlorophyll a concentration (CChl). The amplitude and phase relation between data sets were estimated. To this end, both data sets were gridded to a 1° X 1° X 9.9156 days mesh. A continental maks that excludes areas less than 1000 meters deep, islands, and zonally enclosed seas was applied to allow the use of digital filters. The global maps of both variables were rearranged into zonal-temporal (or Hovmöller) diagrams for each degree of latitude. To each one of these diagrams a series of bidimensional finite impulsive response filters (FIR-2D) was applied. These decompose the signal of each variable in spectral bands associated with Rossby waves with periods of approximately 24, 12 and 6 months. Phase speeds (cp) were estimated based on the Radon transform method; periods (T) and wavelengths (L) were obtained by least squares fit of a sinusoidal function. Correlation, phase and amplitude were obtained along the zonal extension of the three basins (Atlantic, Indian and Pacific) at each degree of latitude. The analyzed latitudes present cp24, cp12 and cp6 estimates based on AASM and CChl that are within the 95% confidence interval of each other. Latitudes between the subtropical and subpolar gyres and in the central region of the subtropical gyre were chosen for further analysis in both hemispheres. Results indicate that the horizontal advection of background meridional gradient of chlorophyll concentration prevails in relation to vertical advection of nutrients and/or chlorophyll a in regions between oceanic gyres. In the central regions of the subtropical gyres the vertical advection prevails over the horizontal advection. The results presented in this study indicate that the first mode baroclinic Rossby waves have influence over the phytoplanktonic biomass. This influence operates through horizontal or vertical advection, depending on the oceanic region.

The analyzed latitudes present cp24, cp12 and cp6 estimates based on AASM and CChl that are within the 95% confidence interval of each other. Latitudes between the subtropical and subpolar gyres and in the central region of the subtropical gyre were chosen for further analysis in both hemispheres. Results indicate that the horizontal advection of background meridional gradient of chlorophyll concentration prevails in relation to vertical advection of nutrients and/or chlorophyll a in regions between oceanic gyres. In the central regions of the subtropical gyres the vertical advection prevails over the horizontal advection. The results presented in this study indicate that the first mode baroclinic Rossby waves have influence over the phytoplanktonic biomass. This influence operates through horizontal or vertical advection, depending on the oceanic region.

Objetivo desse trabalho foi a utilização de métodos geodésicos para eleboração de um modelo digital de elevação integrado com dados hidrológicos para monitoramento das áreas afetadas pelas inundações do Rio Uruguai na cidade de Itaqui, Rio Grande do Sul, que periodicamente sofrem perdas e grandes gastos devido as recorrentes inundações. Para tanto neste trabalho é aplicado uma metodologia baseada na associação de dados provenientes de diferentes fontes (dados de levantamento geodésico, altimétrico, série histórica de dados hidrológicos), e que juntos retornam um produto final preciso e confiável. Para início do trabalho foi realizado a vinculação das cotas do rio ao sistema geodésico brasileiro através do nivelamento geométrico entre uma RN de referência e as réguas linimétricas do rio. Na segunda parte do trabalho foi aplicada técnicas de posicionamento geodésico dentro da região de estudo e posterior processamento e análise dos dados obtidos. Nessa etapa também realizou-se a conversão de altitudes geométricas em ortométricas e sua correção com o uso de um modelo geoidal. A terceira etapa do trabalho consistiu na geração de modelos digitais com diferentes interpoladores em ambiente SIG e posteriormente foi realizada uma análise estatística para validação e classificação dos modelos por meio do Software GeoPec desenvolvido especificamente para avaliação de dados espaciais. E por último a validação do MDE resultante através da comparação com trabalhos já realizados e com uma aplicação direta em um evento ocorrido no ano de 2017. A aplicação dessa metodologia permitiu a obtenção de um modelo digital de elevação preciso e acurado classificado dentro das normativas da cartografia nacional. Tal resultado justifica que a aplicação da metodologia proposta pode ser empregada por toda área urbana do município de Itaqui retornar algum suporte aos gestores visto que a metodologia apresentou resultados satisfatórios, necessitando porém de alguns ajustes e complementos de forma a se tornar mais eficiente. / The knowledge of earthly relief has always been of great importance to mankind, and the mode of its representation is the object of constant and multiple studies.The objective of this work was the use of geodetic methods for the elaboration of a digital elevation model integrated with hydrological data to monitor the areas affected by the Uruguay River floods in the city of Itaqui, Rio Grande do Sul, which periodically suffer losses and large expenses due to recurrent floods. For this purpose, a methodology based on the association of data from different sources (geodetic survey, altimetric data, historical series of hydrological data) is applied, and together they return an accurate and reliable final product. For the beginning of the work the linking of the river quotas to the Brazilian geodetic system was done through the geometric leveling between a reference RN and the linimetric rules of the river. In the second part of the work, geodetic positioning techniques were applied within the region of study and later processing and analysis of the data obtained. In this stage also the conversion of geometric altitudes in ortometric and its correction with the use of a geoidal model was realized. The third stage of the work consisted in the generation of digital models with different interpolators in GIS environment and later a statistical analysis was performed for the validation and classification of the models through the GeoPec Software developed specifically for the evaluation of spatial data. And finally, the validation of the resulting MDE through the comparison with works already carried out and with a direct application in an event occurred in the year 2017. The application of this methodology allowed to obtain a digital model of accurate and accurate elevation classified within the norms of the cartography. This result justifies that the application of the proposed methodology can be used by all urban areas of the municipality of Itaqui to return some support to the managers since the methodology presented satisfactory results, however, requiring some adjustments and complements in order to become more efficient.
