Public Market Trade Areas: Local Goods, Farmers, and Community in the U.S. Southwest Region, 1996-2016

Oppenheim, Vicki Ann 05 1900 (has links)
The number of public markets in the United States increased from more than 300 in the 1970s to more than 8,600 by 2016. This increase in markets is related to changes in food production, localism and the local food systems movement, socioeconomic changes, cultural changes, and perceptions of embeddedness. Research on the underlying conditions for the success of public markets is scant in the United States, and especially in the USDA Southwest Region. This study provides analysis of public market locations as compared with non-market locations by drive-time trade areas during a 20-year period, 1996 and 2016, to gain further insights into factors leading to their success. The results from logit regression analyses and simulations of socioeconomic, college-town status, and climate-grid classifications find an increased likelihood of public markets with population, education, college town status, and some climate-grid locations. Median income, surprisingly, has an inverse relationship with public market success. Qualitative data and a literature review point to three types of embeddedness that motivate customers to attend public markets. This study concludes that "local nontradable consumer goods" tied to place are offered at these "nontradable consumption amenities." These amenities are "third places" that promote social interaction and become important places of community, farmer support, and commerce across the Southwest Region.

Rehabilitace historického jádra a přilehlého okolí města Kyjov se zaměřením na veřejný prostor / The Rehabilitation of the historical center and adjacent surroundings of Kyjov with a focus on the public space

Fojtíková, Martina January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis is focused on the rehabilitation of adjacent surroundings of the historical center of Kyjov and revitalizing public spaces. Part of the thesis are the analysis of the current condition of the solved and affected area, problems evaluation and values of the territory and draft of a new building structure along with a working transport solution. The main criterion for the choice of the area to be solved for me was the problem of this locality with conjunction to industry area of the mills and a very small percentage of the quality of the territory. The mill site occupies almost a quarter of the area and together with surrounding buildings, makes a large impassable barrier in the city. The draft seeks to respond to the functioning state of the site and to rehabilitate the surrounding environment. Another factor for the selection of the territory was the unused potential of the river side Kyjovka flowing through the area. This area hides many other problems and there is no quality architecture. My task was to combine all aspects of the area and make the most of it for the draft. A new functional neighborhood of housing with public spaces and amenities is being designed on the area. The draft include 2 new streets, 4 public spaces, pedestrian zone, Kyjovka riverside, 45 new buildings and 10 reconstructed buildings. The concept of the area also concerns the transfer of the existing main railway station. The draft is also aimed on the main problem of Kyjov, as a growing age population, the poor quality of services and commuting to work.

Řešení brownfields v rámci České republiky - Tepna Náchod / The Brownfields solutions within the Czech Republic - Tepna Nachod

Kalvoda, Vít Unknown Date (has links)
The urban study deals with the design of the new city district in the area where the Tepna Náchod textile factory used to stand. The total area of the solved area (including the existing development) is 10.35 ha. My intention was to create a new neighborhood that will take advantage of the huge benefits of this area. These are the terrain configuration and the immediate proximity of the historic city center and the train and bus stations. Because the area is flat and it is one of the few in the city that is not on the slope, I decided to place a compact block of flats and make the most of the area. The aim was to design a new city district, basically a modern city center, but it will not compete with the historic one, but rather will support it. The newly designed public spaces are not critical in their size, but in their content and diversity. The main idea of the proposal was to use the proximity of the railway station, the historic center and the terrain and create a barrier-free city district for the inhabitants, which will connect the surrounding city districts and at the same time offer enough housing, places for business and also a leisure time environment. And everything is within walking distance of the station and the center.

The building is situated in the South Moravian Region in the northern part of the village Tišnov, which is located about 30 kilometers away from the city of Brno. Recently, in this area new family houses and apartment buildings have been built. The building is designed as five above-ground storey, partially basement incl. a separate underground car park. On the first floor there is also the main entrance to the building, and through there is further access to the upper or lower floors of the building. In the basement there is a technical background of the building and access to the underground parking. The second floor serves as office space for multipurpose use. There are apartments on the third, fourth and fifth floor, with some apartments on the 4th floor being designed as two-level maisonettes. The architectural design is based on the concept of straight lines and sharp edges, which also presents a flat roof roofing solution and receding storey with terraces. The building is detached, situated in a relatively flat terrain. All entrances to the building are designed as barrier-free. The white-blue color of the building facade alternates with the use of gray stone cladding. The roofing of the mixed-use building is solved on two levels by a single-layer extensive vegetation flat roof.
