McPherson, Elsworth Adam January 1987 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / The way in which people utilise their FREE TIME [that is time left after all commitments (social and physiological) have been met] forms the central theme of this study. An important aspect of this theme for the geographer is the interaction between supply and demand of recreational facilities, because determines the spatial location of facilities in urban areas. In the South African society certain factors which influence the normal interaction between supply and demand have developed which can be identified as problems. In this study the problems which exist regarding recreation and the use of free time are examined with specific reference to the people living in Bellville South, a "Coloured" Group Area on the Cape Flats. Data for the study was collected with the air of a structured questionnaire and thereafter statistically analysed with the intention of answering the following questions: What is the nature and extent of the use of free time during the day, over weekends and during vacations of the inhabitants of Bellville South? How does the politico-economic structure influence the supply of facilities for recreation in Bellville South? What is the influence of the politico-economic structure on the demand for facilities (the recreational behaviour) for the inhabitants of Bellville South? The data which had been collected with the aid of questionnaire, was further supplemented with personal interviews. In order to answer the above questions satisfactorily, recreation resource base in Bellville South was looked firstly. The local supply was measured according to national and international norms based on information obtained from the relevant literature. An attempt was made secondly to determine the demand for recreation generated by the community. It was evident from the literature that the socio-economic level of communities played a vital role in the determination of the extent of their demand. By examining certain socio-economic parameters, it was found that the community of Bellville South consisted mostly of people from the working-class. Subsequently the factors which have an influence on the recreational behaviour of the respondents during the day, weekend and vacation time-periods, were examined. It was found that, as one can expect from a predominantly working class community, recreation was mostly directed at the home environment during all three time-periods. This can be explained by referring to the constitutional constraints (Group Areas Act, Separate Amenities Act), socio-economic constraints and the inadequate recreational facilities in the study area. The interaction between demand and supply within the prevailing politico-economic structures was subsequently examined. The correlation between demographic and socio-economic variables and recreational activities was examined with the aid of crosstabulations. The resulting spatial pattern of the recreational behaviour of the respondents was analysed cartographically. By examining the latent and potential demand for recreational facilities it was found that there are very real needs in the study area. Lastly, recommendations were made with a view of alleviating the problems which have been identified. It was felt that immediate attention should be paid to shortcomings in the supply and maintenance of recreational facilities in Bellville South, while the political problems which make a meaningful utilisation of recreational facilities by everybody in South Africa impossible at the moment, should also be removed.

Satisfaction résidentielle et configurations spatiales en milieu périurbain / Residential satisfaction and spatial configurations in a periurban area

Youssoufi, Samy 09 December 2011 (has links)
Since the 1960s, French cities are concerned with an urban sprawl process. This urban sprawl leads to the emergence of a particular space located at the interface between the city and the countryside: the periurban. The social, morphological or the spatial practices of its inhabitants give the suburban a particular singularity and specificity. It is a space of contradiction that attracts both because of the "natural" living environment that it provides to households, but also because of its proximity to the city and the opportunities related to accessibility to various urban amenities. To understand more precisely this enthusiasm for periurban areas, this thesis proposes to explore the individual-residential environment relationship in terms of the satisfaction. The aim is to link a cognitive information with a spatial information. By modeling each of these components by the use of specific indicators, various statistical models are used to highlight the spatial attributes of the living environment that influence the satisfaction level of individuals. The modeling approach is central in this thesis. After the establishment of a satisfaction survey conducted on more than one thousand households living in a suburban area of Besancon, the process is to build indicators to characterize two types of residential amenities: the landscape and the accessibility to shops and services. Each of these amenities is then incorporated into statistical models to assess their contribution to the satisfaction of the household. The approach essentially modeling and exploratory offers interesting perspectives in the field of urban planning. By using basic and reproducible models, one of the objectives is to build mapping documents describing the potential of satisfaction on a large scale.

Analyse économique du développement territorial du tourisme : prise en compte des aménités et des interactions spatiales marchandes et non marchandes / An economic approach of territorial development of tourism : the effect of amenities and market and non-market spatial interactions

Truchet, Stéphanie 23 September 2011 (has links)
This PhD thesis aims at identifying the determinants of territorial development of tourism and provides a framework for analysing the mechanisms of tourism firm location. From a theoretical point of view, spatial economics is the main field mobilized, complemented by tourism economics and social capital theories. The thesis is divided into two parts, each one combining theoretical and empirical analysis. The first part focuses on the effect of amenities. After a clarification of the concept of amenities, the impact of their spatial distribution on tourism development is analysed on the basis micro-economic models. The theoretical assumptions are then tested using an econometric analysis. The second part focuses on the interactions between clustered tourism firms interact and on the influence of these mechanisms on tourism development. An analytical framework is proposed in order to highlight market and non-market mechanisms of spatial interactions. This framework allows to identify the determinants of these interactions and their effects on tourism development. A second empirical analysis, which includes estimations as well as case studies, is then designed in order to validate the theoretical analysis. The thesis concludes that the spatial distribution of amenities within the territories plays an important role. Indeed, it affects not only tourist attractiveness but also the emergence of spatial interactions between tourism businesses, which, up to a certain level, may enhance tourism development.

Espacio público para todos: using purpose-oriented amenities to enhance childhood development in Mexican public spaces

Ewald, Lauren January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Huston Gibson / The issues infested in urban slum communities are many, of which I had no problem indentifying a dilemma specific to my interests in landscape architecture and socially equitable places. However, sustainable solutions specific to these dynamic urban forms and communities are unfamiliar academic territory. Extreme levels of poverty fostered in these communities cause deficiencies in a child’s development, who are often without access to a formal, structured education system (UNDP, 1999). Public spaces are particularly stimulating environments for youth learning and development, but most urban environments in shanty towns host a milieu of violence and crime, making most public streets and vacant lots unsafe. These conditions are ripe for visionary designers to intervene, improving the physical aspects of urban public spaces and specifically bettering the quality of life for children living in these communities. Answering this question required literature research and precedent studies, which was important for developing a thorough understanding of developmental theory as it relates to socio-economically disadvantaged children. By focusing my studies on public spaces in the neighborhood Vistas del Cerro Grande in Chihuahua, México, I began to understand the cultural idiosyncrasies specific to people living in urban shantytowns. Data collected from the neighborhood via surveys, interviews, community meetings, and an auto-ethnographic video study with fifth and sixth grade students provided an introduction to the community and the larger themes and objectives for future public space design. Visiting comparable communities in México City, México deepened my understanding as I was able to observe the daily lives of México City residents with diverse socio-economic statuses, hear their individual perspectives on the history and cultures, and relate to their frustrations with current political, economic, and societal systems. The methodologies described above culminated in a design typology specific to Vistas del Cerro Grande, consisting of public streets, pedestrian access ways, plazas, and vacant lots. These types form the backbone of my research report, which represents an evidence-based design palette of purpose-oriented amenities for positive childhood development in shanty town public spaces. The typology caters to the specific needs of the Vistas del Cerro Grande community, as identified in the research.

No. of bitstreams: 1 FinalThesis_MarcelaGiannella.pdf: 3026196 bytes, checksum: f83eebb4a8d5b527eefe2d0464237482 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-01-10 / This research reveals what attributes and services student housings and purpose-built accommodations provide their target groups with. It analyzes not only the developing and growing student housing market in Brazil but also its trends with the goal of establishing which characteristics students from four specific private institutions (FGV-Eaesp, FAAP, Mackenzie and PUC) value more when choosing their accommodation. By studying what is a student housing and offered attributes, analyzing benchmarks, competitors and market tendencies, one was able to gather information that allowed to define what aspects are considered a priority during a renting decision making process. The qualitative and quantitative field researches enhanced the analysis by distinguishing what is of basic provision and what adds value to the business as well. The expected result of this study is to provide the real estate company which will develop the purpose-built residency for students with their target group profile and preferences, linking the findings from the carried research to the academic information on the subject and the market assessment of the sector.
