Estimation of selected nitrogen compounds, nickel and phosphates in foodstuffs by continuous flow systems

Makhafola, Makhapa Abia 22 February 2006 (has links)
Flow injection analysis offers distinct advantages in reproducibility, flexibility, sample throughput and cost performance. Since it was introduced in 1975, there are more than 10 000 publications to date. The present study focuses on the development of process analysers for the determination of nitrogen compounds (namely, nitrate, nitrite and protein), nickel, and phosphate in various combination in samples originating from various fields, such as foodstuffs, water, and fertilisers. Nitrite is potentially unstable; it decomposes with time under acidic medium with an increase in decomposition rate as the concentration of acid increases. Raman spectroscopy was employed as a means of determining the rate of decomposition of nitrite in solutions at various pH values. A simple method for the determination of nitrite in foodstuffs by flow injection analysis (FIA) is described. The foodstuffs containing nitrite are digested in a microwave oven and then treated with 1 moℓ/Q NH4CI solution at pH 9. The simultaneous determination of nitrate and nitrite in foodstuffs and water was also studied. Cadmium (coarse powder) was used to reduce nitrate to nitrite. The effect of pH, length of reductor column, and various types of cadmium reductor on the yield of nitrite are investigated. The flow injection method was developed for the spectrophotometric determination of nickel in cured meat. Dimethylglyoxime (DMG) in acetate buffer at pH 6.4 nickel forms a red complex which is measured at 475 nm. The effects of chemical and physical parameters in flow injection analysis were studied. A new bienzymatic amperometric sensor is proposed for the assay of proteins in milk. The sensor is based on two enzymes, namely, carboxypeptidases A and L-amino acid oxidase. The use of flow injection analysis and Raman spectroscopy for the determination of phosphate in foodstuffs and fertilisers, is also compared in this study. / Thesis (PhD (Chemistry))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Chemistry / unrestricted

Staněk, Miroslav January 2010 (has links)
The main goal of this diploma thesis is the creation of the bases for the project realization with the output in the form of the web portal for disabled fellow - citizens and people with special needs, e.g. elderly, foreigners etc. Mentioned bases form especially the analytic part of the project and description and realization of the most activities, which are in some way related to the work of the analyst. One of the most important contributions of this diploma thesis is the identification of the issue of disabled people, the identification of current available significant and germane information within the framework and especially the proposal and recommendation for developing the present situation. This diploma thesis forms finally the indispensable benefit for resolution of the whole project, because it contains its substantial part. The thesis is divided into several comprehensive and connected blocks. There are the main goals and reasons leading to choosing this subject described in the introduction, as well as the premises and limitations of realization of this diploma thesis. The author continues with identification of the information needs of possible portal users, whereas the emphasis is placed on the status and number of disabled citizens in the Czech Republic. Another important part of this thesis is the construction and description of the project plan, which includes the activities and occurrences needed for the realization of the overall solution. The remaining structure of the thesis is determined by a sequence of phases and activities described in the project plan. The evaluation of achieved goal's levels and detail identification of the contributions is made at the close of this diploma thesis.

Analysing law and policy, and the contributions of government-sponsored institutions to publishing development

Mahama, Anatu K. January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines law and policy in the book publishing industry in Ghana, with an evaluation of the success of government-sponsored institutions that have been established for the purpose of publishing development in the country. Issues concerning publishing development in Ghana and other countries in Africa have attracted considerable debate and coverage in the literature. The focus of the debate has been mainly centred on challenges confronting publishing development in the continent and the promotion of sustainable schoolbooks provision. Whilst there is a body of existing literature on the historical development of book publishing and its challenges, the role of law and policy, and the contributions of government-sponsored institutions to publishing development has not been explored. This thesis therefore provides the first analysis of law and policy, and an evaluation of government-sponsored institutions. In an attempt to fill this gap, this research identifies law and policy, examines the rationale for policy formulation, the policy-making process itself, the experiences of various stakeholders in the formulation of these policies and issues relating to the implementation of policy. It also evaluates the success of government-sponsored institutions by examining how their work has influenced book development and publishing in the country. The data for this research comprise legislation, policy documents and recorded interviews. These were analysed using the framework that was developed for book policy analysis. The use of the framework has been particularly useful in the analysis because it is compatible with the critical realist approach. Over two empirical chapters, the use of content analysis provides a thorough insight of the social, economic and political context, within the context of Ghana, for which institutions dedicated to publishing development were established as well as the formulation of book policies. Although government-sponsored institutions have provided considerable support to publishing development, the findings suggest that their operations are hindered due to a lack of funds and logistics. The findings again suggest that both national and international legislation have not been adequately beneficial to publishing development. A third empirical chapter, which focuses on the interview data for policy development offers an in-depth analysis into the policy-making process and the challenges that are associated with the implementation of policy. The findings suggest existing policy is limited in terms of scope of book publishing, and even with this limitation, there is a lack of transparency in the procurement process. A major challenge of the book publishing industry in Ghana is the lack of resources to enforce legislation and implement policies. Public policy analysis is not a new concept, however this research developed a framework for book policy analysis, a framework that combines concepts from general public policy analysis and in the specific area of information science as well as guidelines from UNESCO s guide to formulating book policies in a way that allowed the content of book policies to be analysed. The research also recommends that institutions should be strengthened through review and restructuring, and to review the textbook policy towards the development of a national book policy that will recognise book publishing as a strategic national industry.

Budská, Kateřina January 2015 (has links)
Thesis "Comparison of the structure of topics in magazine Mateřídouška in the normalization era and in nineteen-nineties " deals with a comparison of the thematic structure of the children's magazine Mateřídouška published during the period of normalization and then after the major political change in 1989 (transition to democracy) in nineteen-nineties. It contains analysis of the content of the magazine focused on topics in four selected years. For the purpose of this thesis two years from the normalization era and two years from the democratic era were chosen: year 1971/1972 (volume 28), year 1988/1989 (volume 45), year 1991/1992 (volume 48) and year 1999 (volume 55). The aim of this thesis is to find differences between those volumes, describe them and evaluate them. Introductory part of the thesis gives information about the purpose of the research and about the methodology used in it. Theoretical part explains main media and psychological terms connected to the topic of the thesis - child reader, socialization process, agenda setting and social construction of the reality. Information concerning the historic context of every selected year, the portfolio of magazines for children published in those years and the status of the magazine Mateřídouška among them are also provided within this part. It also...

La relation entre le monde politique, les médias et la société civile dans la construction du discours de presse sur "l'événement Stan" (octobre 2005, Mexique, Chiapas) : de l'objet médiatique à l'instrument politique / The relationship between the world of politics, the media and the general population determining the discourse in the written press covering "event Stan" (october 2005, Chiapas, Mexico) : from a media object to a political instrument

Morales, Julie 20 November 2009 (has links)
The relationship between the world of politics, the media and the general population determining the discourse in the written press covering « event Stan » (October 2005, Chiapas, Mexico) : From a media object to a political instrument. On 4 October 2005 the state of Chiapas (situated in the south east of Mexico) experienced one of the biggest disasters in its history. This was caused by the tropical storm Stan as well as a number of other factors. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the social, political, economic and environmental reality constructed and portrayed by the press of this so-called ‘natural’ disaster. It seemed essential to study the discourse of the media in order to analyse how the disaster has been managed by different levels of the Mexican government, how they interact, knowing a fortiori, that this kind of media representation has a strong influence on the civil population. Our goal was to reveal the system which dictates the relationship between the world of politics, the press and the civilian population because we believe that it determines how discourse is constructed in the press. The media therefore acts as a filter that constructs a reality which is often considered as ‘the’ reality. However this thesis will show that the media is only a prism out of which emerges a reflection of the social sphere and the world of politics as well as the interactions which take place inside this prism. Two newspapers from Mexico city (La Jornada et Crónica de Hoy) and two regional newspapers from Chiapas (El Heraldo de Chiapas et Cuarto Poder) were chosen as focal points and study instruments. Using the Morin-Chartier analysis method of the content of the press discourse as well as our audiovisual investigation on the ground, we were able to carry out both a qualitative and quantitative study

ANALISI DEL CONTENUTO E PEOPLE CENTRED APPROACH NELLE POLITICHE SANITARIE: UNA PROPOSTA METODOLOGICA / Content Analysis and People Centred Health policies: proposal for a methodology

SAONARA, IRENE 16 April 2018 (has links)
The aim of this research is to investigate the possibility to develop a secondary textual-data based protocol in order to use textual material such as interviews, national strategic plans and other official documents to classify a health policy as “integrated and people centred”. According to WHO resolution A69/39 “An integrated people-centred approach is crucial to the development of health systems that can respond to emerging and varied health challenges, including urbanization, the global tendency towards unhealthy lifestyles, ageing populations, the dual disease burden of communicable and non communicable diseases, multi-morbidities, rising health care costs, disease outbreaks and other health-care crises.” But how can we determine if a health policy is integrated and people centred? In this study, I try to develop a mixed methods based protocol to analyse textual material and evaluate his relevance with WHO Framework on integrated, people-centred health services. In the first chapter, there is a literature review about content analysis methodologies applied to policy analysis. Then I examine two different health policies, one implemented at international level by WHO (Stop TB Partnership Program) and one implemented at the regional level by Regione Lombardia (Health System Reform). While the first analysis aim is to text the dictionary created by a thematic analysis of the Framework on integrated people-centred health services (described in chapter 2), the second analysis is to apply the dictionary to an Italian case, characterized by textual materials written in Italian.

Teplotně-vlhkostní posouzení prvků krovu s nadkrokevním systémem zateplení / Temperature-moisture Assessment of Members in Truss with Above-rafter Thermal Insulation

Soudek, Pavel January 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with the temperature-moisture assessment of members in truss with above-rafter thermal insulation. Within this system it focuses on the details of creating a roof overhang because that is where the timber elements are under the greatest amount of moisture stress. Different variations of this detail are presented including the extent to which thermo-technical requirements and requirements surrounding the built-in timber elements are satisfied. Theoretical calculations are then compared with measurements which were performed on a real building. This task of measurement involved developing a new measuring device. The development of this device is also described in this paper.
