GIS-based Multi-criteriaAnalysis Used in Forest Fire Estimation: A Case Study of Northernmost Gävleborg County in Sweden

Fire plays an important role in forest ecosystem management depending on the dual character of it. It should be managed and supervised effectively. In this particular study, the study area was located in the north part of Gävleborg County in Sweden, which is in a high- latitude region. Seven factors, divided into natural factors and human caused factors, were extracted from digital elevation model (DEM), classified land use map and feature shape files provided by National Land Survey of Sweden (Lantmäteriet). Two different weighting schemes for the factors were determined by the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. With the help of ArcGIS 9.3 and Erdas 9.3, two classified result maps were obtained, where forest fire risk ranks were shown as five classes, very low, low, moderate, high and very high. The 43 fire incidents in the year 2007 and 2008 recorded by Global Fire Management System were used to evaluate the results. The results show that the higher rank the region is, the larger is the probability for forest fire risk and higher the risk to spread the fire. Furthermore, according to the occurrence time of the fire incidents, the period of time from end of May to beginning of June was generalized as a dangerous period for forest fire risk in this study area. After analyzing and discussing, even if there might be some uncertainties caused by variable selection, resolution problem and weighting schemes, the results were generally reliable.

In response to recent economic downturn and its turmoil impact, semiconductor distributors begin to take on a customer relationship management approaches in hoping to find critical success factors. Additionally, they hope to actively strengthen internal competitiveness so that market advantage can be gained, and therefore leading to a better industry position. therefore, it is very different to establish noticeable product differentiation within this limited environment, as well as maximizing any profit gain. By emphasizing Customer Relationship development, semiconductor distributors can maintain a more long-term relationship and stay competitive. The purpose of this study is therefore listed as follows: 1.To explore the effect of industrial environment on customer relationship and the associating key factors. 2.To explore the attributes of successful business strategy, its critical factors and their effects on successful customer relationship management. 3.To evaluate on financial capability and its influence on the success of Customer Relationship Management. 4.To explore the relationship between supplier relationship management on customer relation and other critical factors. In this study, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) will be used to divide the topic into two levels. First thru the use of general discussion and review on focus group, a structuralized second level, including the associating four dimensions, along with each dimension¡¦s relevance towards the success factors will be drafted. By synchronizing both AHP qualitative and quantitative data, it is then possible to establish an in-depth understanding on Customer Relationship Management in semiconductor distributors. Through this example, it is then possible to understand the critical importance behind these key factors: customization on product capabilities, ability to improve inventory turnover, and lastly, financial control capabilities.

Quality management system for native shipyard to build warships

A building project of new generation warship is required for national security, after long-term purchase plan and thoughtful evaluation. Based on the national policy, of ¡§Naval vessel built in native shipyard¡¨ to effectively build warships in native shipyard with limited manpower, under a planned quality management system, is the objective of this thesis. This thesis will start with the project management of shipyard for building warships in native shipyards. By collecting the quality management pattern of native shipyards, which had been involved in building projects of warships, personal investigation in the past experience, and information from interviewing experts, establish the key success hierarchy structure of quality management system for native shipyards to build warships. In addition, employ Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to analyze the results of questionnaires of experts¡¦ interview to conduct the study of priority weighing. The objective of this thesis is to find important reference information for native shipyards and navy project managing authorities for warship building. Seven kernel items in shipyard quality management including the management of manpower resource, the management of design, the management of purchase, the management of production, the management of quality and quality document, the management of vendors, and the management of industrial safety and sanitation are explored. It is expected to achieve the most effective arrangement, planning, and execution under limited human resources, and to stabilize the quality of warship building by executing practice and the priority of those kernel items for future warship building projects.

The study of key seccess factors for applying the profit center in the construction industry - The case study of a construction company in southern Taiwan.

Since Porfit Center had been applied in DuPont Company in 1920, it has become a popular business model which emphasized on elevating employees¡¦ self-commitment by sharing company¡¦s profit and has been adopted by companies around the world. For the construction industry in Taiwan, due to the decline of real estate market, the deflation of national construction plans and the action of joining into WTO, most construction companies are experiencing their difficult time and therefore are eager to make some changes. Profit Center then has been regarded as a helpful construction management tool to achieve higher performance. This thesis is a case study for a construction company that locates in southern Taiwan and is planning to introduce Profit Center into its system to improve its performance. This thesis follows Habitual Domains¡]HD¡^theory and Analytic Hierarchy Process ¡]AHP¡^method to create the key success factors ¡]KSF¡^for the case company, and a priority list that rankes by the weight index is built at the end of this thesis. To allocate their resource more efficiently for applying the Profit Center, a construction company is suggested to build its own key success factors based on the perspective of construction industry. That is, unlike emphasizing on hwo to share profit as other industries are used to, this study discovered that because high risks and frequent design¡¦s variation might greatly affect the cost of a construction project, the Profit Center in a construction firm is required to focus on how to keep encouraging its employees if the profit of the project is diminished due to the reasons as aforesaid.

Using Analytic Hierarchy Process to Construct a Performance Evaluation Model for Assessment of Direct Labor in the Paper Mill.

Through decades of development along the thriving economy, the paper mill industry in Taiwan has had substantial growth in both quality and quantity. However, the rising trend of corporate digitalization and paperless information transmission in recent years brought the paper industry a never-before-seen impact. Therefore, this research approaches the subject from the aspect of constructing a performance evaluation model for assessment of direct labor in the paper mill industry by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), in expectation to provide a set of more subjective evaluation model to replace the objective, impression-based evaluation method traditionally used in the dominatingly small and medium enterprise centered paper mill industry. A subjective evaluation system will provide evaluated employees information on their performance and development; through such method, the company will be able to strengthen employees¡¦ core abilities and further upgrade the company¡¦s competitiveness to achieve the goal of sustainable development. Subjects of this research are 108 member companies of the Taiwan Paper Mill Industry Association. The survey study were conducted in two stages: The first stage focused on significance analysis; in which indicators that do not have significance to the performance of direct labor in the paper mill industry are deleted. The second stage interviewed 52 companies that are currently implementing performance evaluation systems. The screened performance evaluation indicators are then calculated by the Analytic Hierarchy Process to derive their relative importance and weight. Through analysis of the Analytic Hierarchy Process, we derived an evaluation form for assessment of direct labor in the paper mill industry. Through further study, we discovered that in the performance evaluation dimensions, the work performance dimension has the highest relative importance, professional knowledge/abilities second and personal quality last. Since the full evaluation developed in this research are statistically based, it can be not only provided as a reference for evaluation activities but also converted into an internal audit system for regular evaluation and perpetual improvement to constantly reinforce the company¡¦s competitiveness. This research was also implemented on a target case for empirical study. In which, an actual evaluation with the model developed in this study was carried out. Results of the performance evaluation were highly affirmed by the higher-level management of the experimented company. They consider that this evaluation model is highly interpretative and can be used for future performance evaluation.

Application and Development of Decision Analysis and Resolution Tools for CMMI Level 3

Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI) developed by Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University is aimed to improve the productivity of software development. From CMM to CMMI, they have been adopted worldwide. But the large numbers of unsuccessful and/or painful implementations have proved these implementations easier said than done. The software industry in Taiwan faces the challenge of global competition. Continuous improvement of productivity becomes inevitable. To achieve this goal, recently, government and non-government organizations together promote the CMMI. This thesis focuses on the Decision Analysis and Resolution of CMMI Level 3. Through the design of related methods and the development of software tools, the decision process can be more structured and more effective. Potential applications include evaluation and selection of software and hardware, outsourcing partner, tools, risk resolution alternatives or people. The typical Go/No-Go decision can also fit into it. The decision analysis methods included in this research are Multi-attribute Decision Making and Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP). In addition, alternative screening and group decision making can be integrated into the above methods.

The research of constructing the evaluation indicator of elementary schools

The purpose of this research is adopting IPP evaluation mode to construct the evaluation indicators of elementary schools and its weight system. By way of studying documents and analyzing the evaluation indicators of school affairs already done by 9 counties and cities, there are 3 evaluation fields, 14 evaluation items and 84 evaluation indicators generalized. The researcher chooses the Delphi expert members through recommendations and from finding the scholars who have acquired specialties related to school evaluation . The 28 members include administrative staffs from education bureaus of county and city governments, specialists from teachers training institutes, parent organization, teacher organization, school executives, and schoolteachers. The Delphi members¡¦ main task is to make a judgment about the fitness of evaluation indicators and its weight system. After 3 times of Delphi questionnaires, the fitness of evaluation indicators are acquired. In the mean time, there¡¦s one relative weight questionnaire at the third time, and AHP is adapted to construct its weight system. The research results indicate: I. The main connotations and the evaluation indicators of elementary school evaluation . II. The ¡§Delphi Questionnaires" construct the fitness of evaluation indicators contents of elementary school affairs. III. The ¡§relative weight questionnaires¡¨ construct the weight system of evaluation indicators contents of elementary school affairs. Part 1. The study on key success factors of the R&D innovation management in high value-added chemical industry

Abstract There have been lots of M&A, alliance and restructuring activities occurred in the chemical industry all over the world since 2001. In order to operate the business successfully, the best way is through innovation instead of taking restructuring, cost down and/or M&A strategy only. Usually, chemical material should be well mixed or prepared to get unique properties for application. R&D and innovation are the good solutions. Under such circumstances, in order to win the game and even to survive, the chemical firms need to make changes of their products to be more value-added and keep their sustaining competitive advantages . This study has surveyed the questionnaires which were answered from the high value-added chemical firms, government, educational and research institutes. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was adopted for analysis. Our findings are: 1. The Establishment of Performance Indices with Balanced Scorecard for Salespersons in the Paper Industry

In today¡¦s world of highly developed economies, the average yearly consumption of paper per person is usually considered as an index of living standard. The paper industry is one of the basic industries necessary to our daily lives and an indispensably important industry in the domestic economic development. Basically, paper is a cheap medium that can be used for a wide range of purposes. Compared with other media, it has strong competitiveness. And as the industry is growing more mature, it is necessary to further investigate how to expand the market and enhance manufacturer¡¦s profit, so as to reach the goal of sustainable management of an enterprise. In order to evaluate whether the salespersons in the paper industry are able to bring profit for the company, a systematic appraisal system has to be established. This study broke through the conventional performance evaluation method adopted in the paper industry and proposed to use the 4 constructs of Balanced Scorecard as the constructs for performance evaluation, in an attempt to develop a comprehensive appraisal system. Among these 4 constructs, except the ¡§finance¡¨ and ¡§customer¡¨ constructs that were evaluated with objective quantitative indices, ¡§internal workflow¡¨ and ¡§learning and growing¡¨ constructs were subjective qualitative indices. Literature review was first conducted to induce the items for evaluating salesperson¡¦s performance. Through a survey on expert¡¦s opinions, indices considered as more imperative were derived to build the hierarchical structure of performance evaluation. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was then applied to calculate the weight of each index. Finally, empirical verifications were conducted to gain the agreement of the paper industry, in hope of providing a reference for the managers of the industry. Regarding to the structure and weight of the performance index established in this study for salespersons in the paper industry, the conclusions were made as follows: 1.The establishment of a performance appraisal system: 19 evaluation indices were developed, based on the 4 major constructs of Balanced Scorecard. 2.Weight of performance evaluation indices: Among the 4 major constructs of Balanced Scorecard, ¡§customer¡¨ was the priority, followed by the ¡§finance¡¨ construct. The overall weight of the two construct accounted for 60%. And among the 19 other indices, ¡§integrity¡¨ had the highest weight, and the rest of the top 5 indices were: gross profit margin rate, concept of cost, customer satisfaction, and achievement of collection. 3.Empirical verifications: This study conducted empirical verifications on a paper manufacturer, and the analysis results were consistent with the subjective evaluations of the high-ranking supervisors in the company. It was believed that the performance indices proposed in this study possessed high objectivity and accuracy, and could be used as a reference for performance evaluations in the future.

A study of Quality Function Deployment(QFD) on domestic construction of warships

The ocean covers more than 70% of the earth¡¦s surface. Taiwan is surrounded by the sea. The defense of the coastal areas and territorial waters depends on the navy, and the navy must make use of various types of warships to exercise command of the sea and safeguard marine peace. With the development of science and technology, weaponry today is more complicated. In order to meet the demand for fighting, warships have higher particularity and complexity than commercial ships. So during the construction of warships we must control the quality of shipbuilding, and guarantee that every performance of a warship can match the demands of fighting, and reach the best result of fighting applications. Based on the government policy of "domestic construction of warships", and the downsizing program of the military. This thesis will start from documented discussions, according to the characteristics of warships¡¦ construction, and adopt the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to exploit multi-estimate criteria models of the naval supervisors and the shipyard operation system. Then calculate the weights of all the characteristics and use the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to build up the house of quality. This study will combine the theoretical and actual experiences to discuss the relation between the demands of the customer (navy) and the shipyard operation system. Several recommendations have been made in order to improve overall performance of the domestic construction of warships. We hope that domestic shipbuilding corporations can do long-term planning and investment on the construction of warships. The navy can also perform warships¡¦ construction frugally and independently. In this way, the navy and the domestic shipbuilding corporations can understand each other better and get the best benefits.
