The Anamorphic Library

Davies, Kelley Adair 30 June 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the idea of perspective, specifically anamorphic perspective, and how anamorphosis can be applied to architecture. Anamorphosis is a distorted image that appears regular only from a certain point. With a focus on anamorphosis, perspectival drawings became the key component in the design of the library. Perspectives have been embodied in architecture; however, they remained limited to the realm of illusion, distinct from constructed reality. The library contains this duality of illusionism and realism. Similar to reading a book, one might get lost in the story, imagine themself as one of the characters, and question if they are in reality, or in the illusion of the book. To further enforce this falsehood, the library holds fictional books, ranging from fairy tales to mythological books. The library is constructed with three main corridors, which wrap around the inner core, an open-air courtyard. The corridors contain the illusion while the "reality" resides adjacent to these corridors. This gives the spectator a chance to witness the stage of the illusion and the behind-the-scenes of the illusion, the reality. / Master of Architecture

Reservoir History Matching Using Ensemble Kalman Filters with Anamorphosis Transforms

Aman, Beshir M. 12 1900 (has links)
This work aims to enhance the Ensemble Kalman Filter performance by transforming the non-Gaussian state variables into Gaussian variables to be a step closer to optimality. This is done by using univariate and multivariate Box-Cox transformation. Some History matching methods such as Kalman filter, particle filter and the ensemble Kalman filter are reviewed and applied to a test case in the reservoir application. The key idea is to apply the transformation before the update step and then transform back after applying the Kalman correction. In general, the results of the multivariate method was promising, despite the fact it over-estimated some variables.

Jean-Luc Marion's Phenomenological Approach to the Trinity and Its Inspiration for Christian Theology

Kim, Hyunjhik January 2023 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Andrew L. Prevot / Thesis advisor: André Brouillette / The philosopher Jean-Luc Marion presents a phenomenological approach to the Trinity. He criticizes traditional trinitarian theology based on metaphysics in that it fails to resolve the intrinsic contradiction between the unicity of the one God and the plurality of the persons of the Trinity. He proposes, rather, 'trinitarian revelation'; in this, Jesus Christ, the par excellence revelation, unveils the Father, while the Holy Spirit guides the beholder to see the icon of the Son from the proper perspective. This anamorphosis model overcomes the limitations of the metaphysical theology of the Trinity; it stresses that the beholder sees the sole visibility of the Son and appreciates the communion of plurality in charity within the mutual relationships of the persons of the Trinity. One of the outstanding points of Marion's phenomenological approach to trinitarian revelation, moreover, is that the viewer is involved in triune God's unveiling. Believers can experience 'trinitarian revelation' through praying personally and participating in the sacraments of the Church. In this conversation of the perspective, they receive the gifts of sacrifice, forgiveness, and communion as the manifestation of the communion of charity among the persons of the Trinity. Paradoxically, as with the communion within the Trinity, these gifts are not directed inwardly to the individual believer, but they are gifts to be given out to others. This is how God reveals himself in Marion's trinitarian mode and how we participate in that revelation of triune God. / Thesis (STL) — Boston College, 2023. / Submitted to: Boston College. The politics of self-narration : contemporary Canadian women writers, feminist theory and metafictional strategies

Macfarlane, Karen E. January 1998 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the politics of self-narration and the use of visual images and strategies in Margaret Laurence's The Diviners , Daphne Marlatt's Ana Historic and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and Cat's Eye. I argue that these authors are reworking the metafictional form by using visual strategies (such as reflection, distortion and point of view) to explore the complex relationship that us created when the woman narrator when she is both subject and object of her own fictional autobiography. / I use the artistic form of anamorphosis as the overriding metaphor for discussing this relation and its manifestation in these texts. Paintings and drawings in which the anamorphic form is used depend upon strategic distortion, indirect viewing and perspective for their effect. Anamorphoses present exploded, fragmented images which, through the strategic positioning of the viewer, are reconfigured into recognizable forms. The emphasis in these works of visual art is upon the moment at which these images are reconfigured. In literary works, I argue, the emphasis is on the process of creating a distorted image and on that which is contained in the spaces that are revealed through the process of exploding that image. This metaphor allows me to explore the interdependence of the visual and written elements of self-representation in these novels and the simultaneous, shifting, mutually informing relation between a narrating, subjective "I" and a narrative "eye" (with its emphasis on the visual, on perspective, and on point of view). / The resistant, reinscriptive and interrogative strategy of "literary anamorphosis" moves these novels beyond the confines of linear, literary forms to create a distinct, feminist, narrative space in which women writing in Canada can articulate the complex politics of their positions in but not of the masculinist Master Narratives that have historically defined and controlled them.

Ensino de geometrias não-euclidianas usando arte e matemática

Semmer, Simone 24 May 2013 (has links)
The present dissertation had as objective to introduce basic concepts of non-euclidian geometries in Mathematics classes of the Medium Teaching using Art and Mathematics. Therefore, it was used the triangular approach, supported by Barbosa and of registrations of semiotic representations, based in the Duval studies. The study involved students of second grades of High School in a public school from Rio Negro (PR). The applied research consisted of two stages. In a first moment, pysanky was analyzed mathematical concepts used in its composition and the use was verified instinctively, by the artisans, of concepts as symmetry, proportion, polygons, ellipses, biláteros, straight line and points. In the second stage the teaching of geometries was approached non-euclidian in the Medium Teaching, using Art and Mathematics. The methodological point of view the approach was qualitative, of interpretative nature, with participant observation. The data were picked up starting from the application of sequences of activities involving anamorphosis, space geometry and projective and, of the application of investigative shop involving plane, space, elliptic and projective geometries. The activities developed with the students involved materials that there manipulated, technological resources, image analysis, historical context and how to produce artistic activities. The results showed the validity of the educational work with interdisciplinary methodology, making the Math lessons motivating and challenging. As the final product, It presents a pedagogical manual that has for purpose to provide teachers of Mathematics and Art, interested in the subject, information connections between Art and Mathematics that are present in the teaching notions of non-euclidian geometries.

Archéologies du futur : anamorphoses et utopies dans l’œuvre d’Angélica Gorodischer (1964-1984) / Archaelogies of the future : anamorphosis and utopia in Angelica Gorodischer's works (1964-1984)

Yannopoulos, Alexis 13 December 2014 (has links)
Angélica Gorodischer is a contemporary Argentine writer of international renown. However, the initial period of his literary production, dominant SF (Science Fiction), remains largely unknown. Beyond their undeniable literary quality, these texts and deserve to be highlighted for thinking they trigger the social relations of domination, some paradoxes of political action but also a period of intense conflict of Argentine History (political and social conflicts, dictatorships and 1966 1976) .We use for this analysis tools developed by sociocriticism theory supplementing them with the use of gender studies and studies utopia and SF. This first question the periodization established by literary criticism to be able to identify gender issues that shape the early works of the writer. We then extend the analysis by taking into account the consubstantiality of social relations and examining the questioning of the idea of nature. Finally, we consider the work as an open and critical encyclopedia that promotes the utopian impulse. Texts and invite the person reading to meditate on the characteristics of an ethics of ambiguity guiding its political and promoting social equity share.
