Development of an event generator for antihyperon-hyperon pair production in antiproton-proton collisions

The goal of this project was to develop a lightweight Monte-Carlo (MC) event generator for hyperon pair production in antiproton-proton collisions, and demonstrate it in one of the hyperon decay reaction channels, which is collisions of proton and antiproton to lambda hyperon and anti-lambda hyperon, and they decay to antiproton-positive pion pair, and proton-negative pion pair. The prototype of this external MC event generator we presented here is based on the software framework of ROOT. Compared to the corresponding framework of embedded MC event generators that is currently used in the PANDA experiment at FAIR, PandaRoot, it allows for easier and quicker testing of new models or formalisms on synthetic data, for example for studying spin observables like polarisation. The event generator was benchmarked by studying angular distributions in final states, which are constructed by kinematic relations of 4-momentum vectors in different reference frames for all mother and daughter particles.

Foram medidos os momentos magnéticos dos estados da banda rotacional do estado fundamental do ANTPOT 159 Tb, através da técnica da distribuição angular perturbada, utilizando-se o campo magnético transiente. Os estados do ANTPOT. 159 Tb foram populados via excitação coulombiana com feixe de ANTPOT. 35 Cl a 88 Me V, sendo os raios -y, emitidos na desexcitação dos estados, observados em coincidência com as partículas retroespalhadas do feixe. Os momentos magnéticos medidos neste trabalho, foram comparados com as previsões de modelos híbridos (rotor+partícula e rotor triaxial+quase-partícula), nos quais a hamiltoniana do núcleo é separada em uma parte fenomenológica que descreve o caroço e uma parte microscópica que leva em conta o movimento da partícula desemparelhada. Os resultados experimentais também foram interpretados com um cálculo puramente microscópico, baseado no modelo de camadas com projeção de momento angular. Os níveis de energia da banda do estado fundamental são bem descritos pelos modelos, embora o staggering em energia previsto pelo modelo rotor triaxial+quase-partícula apresente uma fase de oscilação oposta à observada. Os momentos magnéticos experimentais são bem reproduzidos pelos modelos, nos quais a inclusão de outras configurações sugere uma pequena oscilação, observada nos resultados experimentais. As probabilidades de transição magnéticas B(M1) não são bem descritas por nenhum dos modelos, nos quais a inclusão de várias configurações atenua os valores calculados. / Magnetic moments of the levels in the ground state rotational band of 159Tb were measured using the transient magnetic field perturbed angular distribution technique. The levels in 159Tb were populated by Coulomb excitation with an 88 MeV beam and the deexciting rays were observed in coincidence with backscattered projectiles. The magnetic moments measured in this work were compared with hybrid models (rotor+particle and triaxial rotor+quasiparticle) in which the Hamiltonian of the nucleus is separated in a phenomenological part describing the core and a rnicroscopic part which takes into acconnt the movement of the unpaired particle. The experimental results were also interpreted with a purely microscopic calculation based on the angular momentum projection shell model. The energy levels in the ground state band are well described by the models, although the energy staggering predicted in the triaxial rotor+quasi-particle calculation has a phase opposite to the observed one. The experimental magnetic moments are well reproduced by the models, with the band miring suggesting a slight oscillation as observed in the experimental data. The magnetic transition probabilities B(M1) are not well described by the models, in which the band mixing attenuates the calculated values.

Neutron Scattering at 96 MeV

Data on elastic scattering of 96 MeV neutrons from 56Fe, 89Y and 208Pb in the angular interval 10-70° are presented. The previously published data on 208Pb have been extended, as a new method has been developed to obtain additional information at the most forward angles. The results are compared with phenomenological and microscopic optical potentials. The theory predictions are in general in good agreement with the experimental data. A study of the deviation of the zero-degree cross section from Wick's limit has been performed. The data on 208Pb are in agreement with Wick's limit, while those on lighter nuclei overshoot the limit significantly. A novel analysis method has been developed to obtain the inelastic neutron emission cross sections from the existing 56Fe data. The method is based on folding a trial spectrum with the response of the detector setup. The data cover the angular interval 26-65° and an excitation energy range of 0-45 MeV, ranges hitherto not studied. The results are compared with nuclear model predictions and found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

Fragmentation in Proton-Nucleus Reactions from 100 to 1400 MeV

The heaviest fragments, recoils, have been studied in proton and deuteron induced 28Si reactions and proton-20Ne reactions at 100-300 MeV per nucleon. Inclusive charge and angular distributions and coincidences between He nuclei and recoils have been compared to two theoretical models, Dubna Cascade Model and JAERI Quantum Molecular Dynamics. The overall agreement was good for the reactions with 28Si, however the angular distributions of He fragments could not be reproduced. For the 20Ne reactions the recoil angular distributions were only reproduced for large angles. There was a significant underestimation at small angles and low recoil charge. α-clustering in the bombarding nucleus is a possible explanation for the deviations. In the 100 MeV per nucleon reactions all assumptions of the models may not be valid and the agreement was worst for these reactions. In proton-natXe reactions intermediate mass fragments have been studied from 200 to 1400 MeV. Slow ramping was used to scan the energy. Charge distributions and a caloric curve have been compared to Cascade Fragmentation Evaporation Model. Charge distributions showed good agreement for fragments with Z&lt;8 but the heavier fragments were underestimated.

Fission fragment angular distribution and fission cross section validation

The present knowledge of angular distributions of neutron-induced fission is limited to a maximal energy of 15 MeV, with large discrepancies around 14 MeV. Only 238U and 232Th have been investigated up to 100 MeV in a single experiment. The n_TOF Collaboration performed the fission cross section measurement of several actinides (232Th, 235U, 238U, 234U, 237Np) at the n_TOF facility using an experimental set-up made of Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPAC), extending the energy domain of the incident neutron above hundreds of MeV. The method based on the detection of the 2 fragments in coincidence allowed to clearly disentangle the fission reactions among other types of reactions occurring in the spallation domain. I will show the methods we used to reconstruct the full angular resolution by the tracking of fission fragments. Below 10 MeV our results are consistent with existing data. For example in the case of 232Th, below 10 MeV the results show clearly the variation occurring at the first (1 MeV) and second (7 MeV) chance fission, corresponding to transition states of given J and K (total spin and its projection on the fission axis), and a much more accurate energy dependence at the 3rd chance threshold (14 MeV) has been obtained. In the spallation domain, above 30 MeV we confirm the high anisotropy revealed in 232Th by the single existing data set. I'll discuss the implications of this finding, related to the low anisotropy exhibited in proton-induced fission. I also explore the critical experiments which is valuable checks of nuclear data. The 237Np neutron-induced fission cross section has recently been measured in a large energy range (from eV to GeV) at the n TOF facility at CERN. When compared to previous measurements, the n TOF fission cross section appears to be higher by 5-7 % beyond the fission threshold. To check the relevance of n TOF data, we simulate a criticality experiment performed at Los Alamos with a 6 kg sphere of 237Np. This sphere was surrounded by enriched uranium 235U so as to approach criticality with fast neutrons. The simulation predicts a multiplication factor keff in better agreement with the experiment (the deviation of 750 pcm is reduced to 250 pcm) when we replace the ENDF/B- VII.0 evaluation of the 237Np fission cross section by the n TOF data. We also explore the hypothesis of deficiencies of the inelastic cross section in 235U which has been invoked by some authors to explain the deviation of 750 pcm. The large distortion that should be applied to the inelastic cross sections in order to reconcile the critical experiment with its simulation is incompatible with existing measurements. Also we show that the nubar of 237Np can hardly be incriminated because of the high accuracy of the existing data. Fission rate ratios or averaged fission cross sections measured in several fast neutron fields seem to give contradictory results on the validation of the 237Np cross section but at least one of the benchmark experiments, where the active deposits have been well calibrated for the number of atoms, favors the n TOF data set. These outcomes support the hypothesis of a higher fission cross section of 237Np.
