Studies of the electrical properties and electroforming of thin insulating films

Gould, R. D. January 1973 (has links)
Evaporated thin film sandwich structures of Au-SiOX-Au have been studied. These normally show electroforming effects and subsequently electron emission, electroluminescence, negative resistance and thermal-voltage memory effects. Previous work in the field is critically reviewed. It was shown that the time dependence of the device current and emission current can be explained by making certain modifications to the filamentary conduction theory of Dearnaley. Detailed direct current-voltage measurements have revealed the existence of two different types of breakdown behaviour. At voltages less than 20 V single-hole breakdowns were observed, while in the voltage range 20-30 V large scale irreversible breakdown behaviour took place. The dependence of the voltage at which this occurs (Vß) on insulator thickness and temperature, together with measurements of the device temperature at breakdown and visual evidence of damage after breakdown, has led to the conclusion that this type of breakdown is a thermal effect. Such measurements also pointed to the existence of a high field region within the insulator, and potential distribution measurements confirmed this hypothesis. The high field region was also in evidence at low temperatures where the device current (Ic) showed a log Ic α Vb1/2 dependence on applied voltage (Vb). Measurements of electron attenuation lengths in SiOx gave values of 400-1000 Å irrespective of temperature. The temperature independence was consistent with the emitted electron energy distributions at 77 and 300 K. It was shown that electrons underwent Bragg diffraction through the top Au electrode. The angular distribution of emitted electrons became more isotropic with increasing voltage. Measurements on other systems showed that Al-SiOx/B2O3-Al devices could withstand very high voltages and give improved emission efficiency, while Au-CaBr2-Au and Au-Si3N4-Au devices showed very high initial currents and current-voltage characteristics which were irreversible.

Zkoumání vlastností Higgsova bosonu v experimentu ATLAS / Zkoumání vlastností Higgsova bosonu v experimentu ATLAS

Mlynáriková, Michaela January 2014 (has links)
The Standard Model of elementary particles (SM) predicts the existence of a neutral scalar Higgs boson. However, there are also extensions of the SM (such as the MSSM) in which a number of Higgs bosons is predicted. Especially the additional presence of pseudoscalar and charged Higgs bosons represents one of the crucial differences between the SM and its exten- sions. This work develops a method for determination of the spin and parity of the Higgs boson in several H → ττ decays, namely: H→ τ+ τ− → (h+ ντ )(h− ¯ντ ), H→ τ+ τ− → ( + ντ ¯ν )(π− ¯ντ ) and H→ τ+ τ− → ( + ντ ¯ν )( − ¯ντ ν ), where h denotes π or ρ meson. The method is based on the angular and energy correlations of charged final products from the decays mentioned above. Additionally, the work studies the possibility of signal (Higgs boson decay) and background (Z → ττ decay) discrimination, when one considers a decaying boson with spin 1. All calcula- tions are done in the leading order of perturbation theory. 1

New Collective structures in the Z=76 stable odd neutron nucleus, 187Os

Sithole, Makuhane Abel January 2021 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Low- and medium-spin bands of 187Os have been studied using the AFRODITE array, following the 186W(4He,3n)187Os reaction at a beam energy of 37 MeV. The measurements of γ − γ coincidences, angular distribution ratios (RAD), polarization and γ-intensities were performed using eleven High Purity Germanium (HPGe) clover detectors. In the current work, all the previously known bands have been significantly extended and five new bands have been added to the level scheme. The observed bands are interpreted within the cranked shell model (CSM), cranked Nilsson-StrutinskyBogoliubov (CNSB) formalism and Quasiparticle-plus-Triaxial-Rotor (QTR) model. Systematic comparison of bands with the neighbouring isotopes has also been made. Comparison of the models with experimental data shows good agreement. The configurations of some of the previously observed bands have been modified. Most importantly, the coupling of 2+ γ band to the 11/2+[615] neutron configuration is observed for the first time.

Experimental studies at CERN-nTOF of the 230Th(n,f) reaction

Lapinski, Felicia January 2020 (has links)
This work investigates the feasibility to perform an experiment at CERN n_TOF to study the fission cross section and fission fragment angular distribution (FFAD) of the 230Th(n,f) reaction. An analysis of fission fragment energy losses in the experimental target resulted in a choice of target thickness of 0.1 µm (100 µg/cm2 ), which yields good transmission out of the target at up to 45° emission angles from the target normal. A detection setup using ten PPAC detectors with nine thorium targets interleaved in between them was investigated, where the detectors and targets were tilted 45° with respect to the neutron beam. This makes it possible to measure all emission angles needed with respect to the neutron beam in order to determine the FFAD. For the experimental area EAR2 at n_TOF, a prediction of the count rate in the experiment resulted in low statistical uncertainties after a few weeks of beam time, which indicates that an experiment like this is feasible.

Numerical Calculations of Ion Scattering in Solids

Kwok, K. 04 1900 (has links)
<p> The motion of energetic charged particles inside a crystalline solid is strongly dependent upon the orientation of the ion beam and target. This effect is commonly known as the "channeling" effect. In this report, the development of a computer code is presented which simulates the 3-D ion scatterings experienced by energetic particles moving in a crystalline solid. A Monte Carlo technique is incorporated in the code to calculate scattering angles, range distribution, backscattering distribution and angular distribution of incident ions. The Thomas-Fermi interatomic potential is used for binary collision process and the continuum potential is used for the potentials experienced by the channeled ions inside crystal lattices. </p> / Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)
