A presence of the past: a maritime museum and visitor center in historic Annapolis

Concepcion, Carlos Enrique January 1987 (has links)
The place where the sea and the sky meet is a definition unknown on any map. Only the fisherman and his boat experience this unity. The mast as the symbol of the tree was the reminder of the land Just as the soil was the sign of man's position, his distance from land. The enormous material interaction between the flat surface and the column determined the construction of the boat. The creation of a boat is a challenge to the sea, but the dream of an everlasting existance is an act taken against all the elements. Sverre Fehn / M. Arch.

Dendroarchaeology In Southwestern Nova Scotia And The Construction Of A Regional Red Spruce Chronology

Robichaud, André, Laroque, Colin P. 06 1900 (has links)
Dendrochronology studies in Atlantic Canada are rare partly because old-growth forests are scarce making it difficult to establish multiple-century tree-ring chronologies. One approach to overcome this problem is to use tree-ring records found in the wood of historical structures. For our study, the Sinclair Inn in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, was selected for a dendroarchaeological assessment because of its rich and complex history: it resulted from the merging of two early 18th Century houses (the Soullard and Skene houses). To date the Sinclair Inn, three other historical structures of a younger age were used to establish an annual ring record in lieu of old-growth forest data. Red spruce (Picea rubens), a dominant tree species in the Maritimes, was the most prominent wood found in the structures and allowed for the creation of a regional red spruce reference chronology extending far enough into the past to cover the supposed period of construction of the Sinclair Inn. Crossdating results indicate cutting dates of 1709 and 1710 for the Skene and Soullard houses, respectively, and 1769 for the inn itself. In the process of dating the structure, a ,200-year long regional floating red spruce chronology (1591–1789) was developed that will further help future dendrochronological investigations in the Maritimes.

Seventy Years of Changing Great Books at St. John's College

Rule, William Scott 12 August 2009 (has links)
This dissertation examines a curricular approach at an institution that claims to maintain a liberal arts focus – that of the canon of Great Books as implemented as a formal curriculum at St. John’s College. My research question is: what enabled the Great Books program at St. John’s College to survive for over seventy years? The significance of this question can be seen by noticing that St. John’s College is the only college in the United States to have exclusively adopted reading the Great Books as its four-year curriculum. Other institutions that have experimented with a Great Books program prior to and since its introduction at St. John’s College have continued their existing programs as well, but many have limited their Great Books efforts to an honors course or general core requirement, if their Great Books effort survives at all. My dissertation is historical starting with the influencing factors leading to this curriculum’s introduction at St. John’s College in 1937. I then outline the implementation and document the changes to the list of Great Books comprising the program as it was updated over the subsequent seventy years as documented in St. John’s College’s academic catalogs from 1937 through 2008. I show that the list of Great Books required to be read by every student over the years has contained a consistent core while making slight adjustments.

MATERIAL PROCESS AS A DESIGN TOOL: INVESTIGATING THE MAKING OF CERAMICS IN NOVA SCOTIA

Arseneau, Véronique 10 July 2013 (has links)
Materials are a significant aspect of architectural design, the construction components are selected for their availability, location, cultural meaning, physical characteristics and properties. The construction components are defined by their processes of fabrication and making. This thesis investigates processes of making utilizing local materials. It focuses on the relationship between raw material, fabrication, building application and spatial experiences. The proposed site is the former brickyard located outside Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, Canada. Material excavation, fabrication, and construction will all take place on-site. Through material studies, site strategies, and phased program development, it is hoped that an architectural language has been generated that successfully represents the potentials of developing underutilized locally sources material.
