An evaluation of the science materials accessible in the four white senior high school libraries of Broward CountyUnknown Date (has links)
"The American public is being inundated by newspaper and magazine articles conveying the message that schools in the United States must develop and improve their science curricula if the nation is to compete successfully with ideologies inimical to that taught in this country. Some of these articles concern themselves with immediate remedies, such as more frequent testing of scientific aptitude and progress from the seventh grade on, and providing more teaching materials for all grade levels. Others analyze the present trend of awarding large numbers of college scholarships to high school students. A few of the articles are more philosophical in content: some of these, for example, decry the national habit of secrecy in scientific research. This study has grown out of this widespread concern. It seems reasonable to assume that one significant factor in determining the quality of instruction in science in a senior high school is the adequacy of the instructional materials accessible to the students and teachers of that school. Characterization of a charge injection device detector for atomic emission spectroscopy.Sims, Gary Robert. January 1989 (has links)
A Charge Injection Device (CID) detector has been evaluated as a detector for simultaneous multielement atomic emission spectroscopy. The CID was incorporated into a special liquid nitrogen cooled, computer controlled camera system. Electro-optical characterization of the CID and camera system included determination of readout noise, quantum efficiency, spatial crosstalk, temporal hysteresis, spatial response uniformity, and linear dynamic range. The CID was used as a spectroscopic detector for an echelle grating spectrometer equipped with a direct current plasma emission source. The spectrometer was a standard commercial instrument modified to provide a reduced image format more suitable for use with the CID detector. The optical characteristics of this spectrometer, including wavelength coverage, and optical aberrations are described. The spectroscopic system was evaluated with respect to detection limits, linear dynamic range, and accuracy in both single element and simultaneous multielement modes. Detection limits compared well to literature values reported for photomultiplier tube detector based systems under similar conditions. CID detection limits were superior in the near infrared and visible wavelength region, comparable in the middle UV, and higher in the far UV. The detection limits were determined to be limited by background radiation shot noise. Several elements of a certified standard reference material were simultaneously determined in order to assess the accuracy of the spectroscopic system. The results were highly accurate, even when operating near or below the 3σ limits of detection. Spectral interferences for elements were avoided by using several analytical lines for each element. The results of these investigations indicate that the CID is a superior multichannel detector for analytical atomic emission spectrometry. The capability to simultaneously monitor a wide, continuous spectral range with high spatial resolution, high dynamic range, low readout noise, and insignificant signal crosstalk is now possible. Many analytical benefits of this approach, such as the potential capability to perform rapid qualitative and semiquantitative analysis and the ability to select the optimum spectral lines for highly accurate quantitative analysis are now readily achievable.

Development of an Automated Anesthesia System for the Stabilization of Physiological Parameters in RodentsHawkins, Kevin Michael 24 April 2003 (has links)
The testing of any physiological diagnostic system in-vivo depends critically on the stability of the anesthetized animal used. That is, if the systemic physiological parameters are not tightly controlled, it is exceedingly difficult to assess the precision and accuracy of the system or interpret the consequence of disease. In order to ensure that all measurements taken using the experimental system are not affected by fluctuations in physiological state, the animal must be maintained in a tightly controlled physiologic range. The main goal of this project was to develop a robust monitoring and control system capable of maintaining the physiological parameters of the anesthetized animal in a predetermined range, using the instrumentation already present in the laboratory, and based on the LabVIEWR software interface. A single user interface was developed that allowed for monitoring and control of key physiological parameters including body temperature (BT), mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and end tidal CO2 (ETCO2). Embedded within this interface was a fuzzy logic based control system designed to mimic the decision making of an anesthetist. The system was tested by manipulating the blood pressure of a group of anesthetized animal subjects using bolus injections of epinephrine and continuous infusions of phenylephrine (a vasoconstrictor) and sodium nitroprusside (a vasodilator). This testing showed that the system was able to significantly reduce the deviation from the set pressure (as measured by the root mean square value) while under control in the hypotension condition (p < 0.10). Though both the short-term and hypertension testing showed no significant improvement, the control system did successfully manipulate the anesthetic percentage in response to changes in MAP. Though currently limited by the control variables being used, this system is an important first step towards a fully automated monitoring and control system and can be used as the basis for further research.

Measurement of the temperature dependence of the Buckingham effect (electric-field-gradient-induced birefringence) in gasesJanuary 2009 (has links)
The aim of this research project was to assemble an apparatus to measure the
electric quadrupole moments of gas molecules using the technique of electricfield-
gradient-induced birefringence, or the Buckingham effect. Comprehensive
research by various workers in the field has shown that this technique
provides the only direct means of obtaining the quadrupole moment of a
molecule.
Theory has shown that the most accurate determination of the electric quadrupole
moment is through a study of the temperature dependence of the effect. This
not only allows for the quadrupole moment to be obtained but also enables
the temperature-independent quadrupole hyperpolarisability term to be extracted.
Both the quadrupole moment and the hyperpolarisabilty provide
valuable information in a variety of applications, including intermolecular
forces, electrostatic potentials and non-linear optical phenomena.
This thesis fully describes the apparatus used in these measurements, including a description of the custom built oven that allowed for measurements
to be performed over a temperature range spanning from 25"C up to
200"C. Results for the quadrupole moments and quadrupole hyperpolarisabilities
of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide and hydrogen are
presented, together with a quadrupole moment for carbonyl sulphide from
room-temperature measurements. Wherever possible, the results of this work
