The thesis is divided in five chapters: Chapter I presents the revision of the Neotropical species of Miagrammopes with the description of 21 new species; Chapter II presents the phylogeny of the Uloboridae’ subfamilies and phylogeny of Miagrammopes with description of a new species and new sinonimies for another one; Chapter III presents the revision of Ariston and Siratoba with description of two new species (published in 2014 in Zoological Studies); Chapter IV presents the description of two new species of Tangaroa Lehtinen, 1967 (published in 2015 in Journal of Arachnology); and Chapter V presents the description of a new species and first occurrence of Conifaber Opell, 1982 to Brazil (accepted for publication in Turkish Journal of Zoology). / A presente tese trata da filogenia das subfamílias de Uloboridae Thorell, 1869, descrição de novas espécies de Conifaber Opell, 1982 e Tangaroa Lehtinen, 1967, revisão dos gêneros Ariston O. PickardCambridge, 1896 e Siratoba Opell, 1979, e revisão e filogenia de Miagrammopes O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1870, com ênfase nas espécies Neotropicais. Optou-se por dividir a tese em cinco capítulos; o capítulo I apresenta a revisão das espécies Neotropicais de Miagrammopes com a descrição de espécies novas; o capítulo II trata da investigação das relações filogenéticas entre as subfamílias de Uloboridae e as espécies de Miagrammopes com a descrição de uma espécie nova e a proposição de uma nova sinonímia; o capítulo III é resultado da revisão dos gêneros Ariston e Siratoba com descrições de duas espécies novas (publicado em 2014 na revista Zoological Studies); o capítulo IV, por não necessitar de tratamento taxonômico adicional, trata da descrição de duas espécies novas de Tangaroa Lehtinen, 1967 (publicado em 2015 na revista Journal of Arachnology); e finalmente o capítulo V, apresenta a adição de uma espécie nova e primeiro registro para o Brasil do gênero Conifaber Opell, 1982 (trabalho aceito para publicação na revista Turkish Journal of Zoology).

As aranhas desta família vivem enterradas no solo, dentro de um tubo, fechando a abertura com uma tampa redonda, sendo conhecidas como aranhas alçapão. Os machos adultos abandonam os abrigos e tornam-se cursoriais. Na região neotropical estão descritas 33 espécies, distribuídas em dois gêneros: Neocteniza Pocock, 1895, exclusivamente neotropical, e Idiops Perty, 1833, com a espécie tipo do gênero I. fuscus Perty, 1833, descrita no território nacional. No Brasil, o gênero Neocteniza está representado por apenas duas espécies e o gênero Idiops por oito. O objetivo deste estudo é contribuir para o maior conhecimento da família Idiopidae, com a descrição de três novas espécies de Neocteniza do Brasil central (Cerrado) e a redescrição da fêmea de Idiops camelus (Mello-Leitão, 1937). / The family Idiopidae currently contains 322 species in 22 genera, with greater distribution in the African continent. The spiders of this family live buried in the ground, inside a tube, closing the opening with a round lid, being known as trapdoor spiders. Adult males abandon shelters and become wandering. In the neotropical region 33 species are described, distributed in two genera: Neocteniza Pocock, 1895, exclusively neotropical and Idiops Perty 1833, with the type species of the genus I. fuscus Perty, 1833, described in the national territory. In Brazil the genus Neocteniza is represented by only two species and the genus Idiops with eight.. The objective of this study is to improve the knowledge of the Idiopidae family, with the description of three new species of Neocteniza from Central Brazil (Cerrado) and the redescription of the female Idiops camelus (Mello-Leitão, 1937).

Systematics, evolution and development in Opiliones (Arachnida)

This dissertation investigates evolutionary relationships within a diverse and ancient group of arachnids, the order Opiliones, with emphasis on relationships within the suborder Laniatores. Laniatorid harvestmen encompass over two-thirds of opilionid diversity, but this suborder has received far less than commensurate phylogenetic attention. The ancient age and narrow species distributions of Laniatores, in conjunction with their representation throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world, herald models of unparalleled utility for study of tropical diversity and biogeography. Herein I infer the phylogeny of Laniatores using a ten-gene molecular dataset, which samples for the first time every described family of the group. Based upon morphological and molecular sequence data, I describe three new families of Laniatores--two endemic to Southeast Asia and one to the Afrotropics. Focusing on the biogeography of Australasia, I contrast the evolutionary histories of two families: Sandokanidae, which are restricted to the Indo-Malay Archipelago, and Zalmoxidae, which occurs in the Neotropics and Australasia. Using molecular phylogenetic tools, I demonstrate that sandokanid distribution is largely attributable to continental vicariance in Sundaland, whereas zalmoxid distribution is attributable to a New World origin, followed by colonization of the Indo-Pacific by transoceanic dispersal.
