Exploring the link between the experience of labour relations and transformational leadership / Watermeyer J.P.

Watermeyer, Jacques Pierre January 2011 (has links)
The solar minimum of 2009 has been identified as an exceptional event with regard to cosmic ray (CR)modulation, since conditions in the heliosphere have reached unprecedented quiet levels. This unique minimum has been observed by the Earth–orbiting satellite, PAMELA, launched in June, 2006, from which vast sets of accurate proton and electron preliminary observations have been made available. These simultaneous measurements from PAMELA provide the ideal opportunity to conduct an in–depth study of CR modulation, in particular charge–sign dependent modulation. In utilizing this opportunity, a three–dimensional, steady–state modulation model was used to reproduce a selection of consecutive PAMELA proton and electron spectra from 2006 to 2009. Thiswas done by assuming full drifts and simplified diffusion coefficients, where the rigidity dependence and absolute value of themean free paths for protons and electrons were sequentially adjusted below 3 GV and 300 MV, respectively. Care has been taken in calculating yearly–averaged current–sheet tilt angle and magnetic field values that correspond to the PAMELA spectra. Following this study where the numerical model was used to investigate the individual effects resulting from changes in the tilt angle, diffusion coefficients, and global drifts, it was found that all these modulation processes played significant roles in contributing to the total increase in CR intensities from 2006 to 2009, as was observed by PAMELA. Furthermore, the effect that drifts has on oppositely charged particles was also evident from the difference between the peak–shaped time profiles of protons and the flatter time profiles of electrons, as is expected for an A < 0 polarity cycle. Since protons, which drift into the heliosphere along the heliospheric current–sheet, haven’t yet reached maximum intensity levels by 2008, their intensities increased notably more than electrons toward the end of 2009. The time and energy dependence of the electron to proton ratios were also studied in order to further illustrate and quantify the effect of drifts during this remarkable solar minimum period. / Thesis (M.Com. Influence of information technology on labour relations in the United Arab Emirates / Matar Alneyadi

Alneyadi, Matar Humaid January 2005 (has links)
Information technology has fundamentally exercised an impact on the employment relationship. Firstly, and most obviously, technology is often used as a substitute for labour. However, improvements in information technology have also served to complement labour. Thus triggered employees to strive to maintain their status not just as another commodity of production, but a vital cog in the organisation. Organisational structures changed to such an extent that employers consult their employees about introduction and implementation of new information technologies in the workplace in order to ensure a well organised introduction and structured implementation. The aim of this research is to conceptualise the influence of information technology from the literature, and to determine how new information technologies affect and are affected by the efficiency and effectiveness of task execution on the geographical distribution of work, and the distinct differences that can be observed under varying technical conditions in the characteristics of organisational structure and culture, which are cooperation, influence, communication and employment policies. A study population was• identified within an information technology environment. The study population can be defined as employees in different organisations of one information technology environment in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). A stratified random sample of 360 of the total population of 540 employees (66.67%) in the information technology environment was targeted. A response rate of 70% was achieved, of which 252 responses (99.6%) could be utilised. According to analyses of the data and results of the study the researcher was able to conclude that the need for the implementation of advanced information technology in organisations had increased, that is, if organisations wished to operate in the modem world of business, but it was revealed that little if any corrective channels or procedures accompanied such implementation to ensure effectiveness and efficiency. The researcher established that setting clear goals and objectives for the organisation would help to maintain harmonious relationships. This can be only achieved if the parties to the employment relation understand their stand and role concerning new information technologies. The research consists of the following chapters: Chapter 1: Introduction. Chapter 2: Theories of information technology and labour relations. Chapter 3: Influence of information technology on the role players within the labour relations. Chapter 4: Empirical discussion Chapter 5: Overview, recommendations and concluding remarks. Recommendations for the future research are made. / MCom (Industrial Sociology) North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2006

Constructing a psychological framework for enhancing relational attitudes and behaviour in the South African employment relations context

Kirsten, Monica 04 1900 (has links)
Text in English, abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / This research endeavoured to construct a psychological framework for enhancing relational attitudes and behaviour in a South African employment relations context by investigating the relationship dynamics between individuals’ work-related perceptions (perceived organisational support and justice) and work experiences (psychological contract violation) and their relational attitudes (organisational and union commitment) and behaviour (organisational citizenship behaviour and counterproductive work behaviour) in the workplace, as moderated by their personal dispositions (individualism/collectivism) and mediated by organisational cynicism and trust. The associations between individuals’ personal (gender, age, population group and education level) and work-related (employment status, tenure, job level and union membership) characteristics and these dispositional and relational variables were also explored. A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted on a purposive sample of employed students registered at a higher education institution (n = 740). Canonical correlation analysis revealed that individuals’ work-related perceptions and work experiences as well as their sense of organisational cynicism and trust were strong predictors of their attitudinal commitment towards their organisations and their organisationally directed organisational citizenship behaviour. Structural equation modelling indicated a good fit between employees’ perceptions of the quality of their social exchange relationship with their employing organisations and their trust in and cynicism towards these organisations as antecedents of relational attitudes and behaviour. Mediation analysis indicated that individuals’ work-related perceptions and work experiences influence their attitudinal commitment to their employing organisations through their sense of organisational cynicism and trust. Moderation analysis revealed that the influence of individuals’ cynicism towards their employing organisations on their attitudinal commitment is conditional upon their level of horizontal collectivism. Multiple regression analysis showed that individuals’ gender, population group, level of education and job level explain their attitudinal and behavioural reactions to work-related perceptions and work experiences. Tests for significant mean differences revealed significant differences in terms of the biographical variables. At a theoretical level, the study extended the understanding of relational attitudes and behaviour and the antecedents thereof in the workplace. At an empirical level, the study delivered an empirically tested psychological framework for enhancing relational attitudes and behaviour. At a practical level, individual and organisational interventions in terms of the psychological framework were recommended. / Lolu cwaningo luzama ukwakha uhlaka lwezengqondo lokukhulisa indlela enhle yokucabanga nokuziphatha kumqondosizinda wezindlela zokusebenza eNingizimu Afrika ngokucubungula izinguquko ebudlelwaneni phakathi kwemibono emayelana nemisebenzi yomuntu ngamunye (ukusekela nobulungiswa kwenhlangano okucatshangelwayo) nababhekana nakho emsebenzini (ukungahlonishwa kwesivumelwano sezengqondo) nendlela yabo yokucabanga (ukuzibophezela kwenhlangano nokubumbana) nendlela yokuziphatha (indlela yokuziphatha ngokobuzwe benhlangano nendlela yokuziphatha engavumelani nokwenziwa ngemfanelo komsebenzi) emsebenzini njengoba kujivazwa yindlela bona ngokwabo abaziphethe ngayo (ngokuzimela/ngokusebenzisana) futhi kugqugquzelwa ukungabaza nokungabinethemba enhlanganweni.
