Influence of information technology on labour relations in the United Arab Emirates / Matar AlneyadiAlneyadi, Matar Humaid January 2005 (has links)
Information technology has fundamentally exercised an impact on the employment
relationship. Firstly, and most obviously, technology is often used as a substitute for labour.
However, improvements in information technology have also served to complement labour.
Thus triggered employees to strive to maintain their status not just as another commodity of
production, but a vital cog in the organisation.
Organisational structures changed to such an extent that employers consult their employees
about introduction and implementation of new information technologies in the workplace in
order to ensure a well organised introduction and structured implementation.
The aim of this research is to conceptualise the influence of information technology from the
literature, and to determine how new information technologies affect and are affected by the
efficiency and effectiveness of task execution on the geographical distribution of work, and
the distinct differences that can be observed under varying technical conditions in the
characteristics of organisational structure and culture, which are cooperation, influence,
communication and employment policies.
A study population was• identified within an information technology environment. The study
population can be defined as employees in different organisations of one information
technology environment in Dubai (United Arab Emirates). A stratified random sample of 360
of the total population of 540 employees (66.67%) in the information technology environment
was targeted. A response rate of 70% was achieved, of which 252 responses (99.6%) could be
utilised.
According to analyses of the data and results of the study the researcher was able to conclude
that the need for the implementation of advanced information technology in organisations had
increased, that is, if organisations wished to operate in the modem world of business, but it
was revealed that little if any corrective channels or procedures accompanied such
implementation to ensure effectiveness and efficiency. The researcher established that setting
clear goals and objectives for the organisation would help to maintain harmonious
relationships. This can be only achieved if the parties to the employment relation understand
their stand and role concerning new information technologies.
The research consists of the following chapters:
Chapter 1: Introduction.
Chapter 2: Theories of information technology and labour relations.
Chapter 3: Influence of information technology on the role players within the labour relations.
Chapter 4: Empirical discussion
Chapter 5: Overview, recommendations and concluding remarks.

A longitudinal analysis of the prescribing patterns of anti–epileptic medicine by using a medicine claims database / T. van ZylVan Zyl, Tiaan January 2010 (has links)
The prevalence of epilepsy in society is general knowledge; however the impact on
social activity as well as other daily factors are not always fully recognised. Epilepsy
frequently poses a problem with regard to work–related activities (Heaney, 1999:44).
Moran et al. (2004:425) indicated that the major impacts of epilepsy on life were work
and school difficulties, driving prohibition, psychological and social life of which
restriction of work or schooling has the greatest impact on epileptic’s life. In all cases
the type, severity, and frequency of the seizures as well as the age would be relevant.
Davis et al. (2008:451) established that 39% of all epileptics were not adherent to their
therapy and in patients over 65 this was even higher at 43 %. Non–adherence with antiepileptic
medicine appears to be related to increased health care utilisation and costs
and may also lead to an increased probable accidents or injuries
The general objective was to investigate anti–epileptic medicine prescribing patterns
and treatment cost in a section of the private health care sector by using a medicine
claims database.
A retrospective drug utilisation study was done on the data claims from a pharmacy
benefit management company for the study period 1 January 2005 to 31 December
2008.
Firstly epilepsy was investigated in order to understand the disease and to determine
the prevalence and treatment thereof. It was found that epilepsy is still one of the most
common neurological conditions and according to the findings, 2 out of every hundred
patients were using anti–epileptic medicine in this section of the private health care
sector. To make this condition socially more acceptable and understandable, public
education for special target groups concerning the disorder must be conducted as well
as employment training programmes for people with epilepsy themselves. The utilisation patterns of anti–epileptic drugs were reviewed, analysed and interpreted.
It was determined that anti–epileptic medicine items are relatively expensive with
regards to other medicine items on the total database. With regard to gender, more
females are using anti–epileptic medicine than males on the database. The largest age
group of patients using anti–epileptic medicine, is between > 40 years and <= 64 years of
age. It was also clear that prevalence increase as age increase.
With regard to the different prescribers, the number of items prescribed by a general
practitioner was almost double that of the other prescribers. It was further established
that newer anti–epileptic medicines are more expensive than older anti–epileptic
medicine according to the cost per tablet in this section of the private health care
sector.
Carbamazepine and valproate were the two active ingredients that were most
frequently prescribed as a single item on a prescription. After a cost–minimisation
analysis was done, R134 685.66 could have been saved when generic substitution was
implemented.
The refill–adherence rate decreased as age increased. Only 30.46% of the trade
names was refilled according to acceptable refill–adherence rates. The refill–adherence
rate according to active ingredient showed that medicine items containing,
phenobarbitone/vit B or gabapentin had the lowest unacceptable refill–adherence rate.
The limitations for this study was stipulated and recommendations for further research

English, Afrikaans and Zulu summaries / Orientation: The study researched physical disability apropos of employment. The attitudes of able-bodied persons towards persons with disabilities (PWD) culminate in the exclusion of the latter from the workplace. Aspects of this topic have been addressed by researchers abroad and in Africa using samples of limited size.
Research aim: The general aim of the research was twofold. Firstly, it set out to uncover the causes of exclusion of persons with physical disabilities from employment in the South African open labour market, and secondly, to identify interventions that could assuage this situation.
Research methodology: A convergent mixed methods research strategy was adopted, with responses of employers forming the quantitative strand and those of persons with physical disabilities (PWPD) forming the qualitative strand. A customer survey questionnaire was developed and validated for the sample of 342 employers, while interview schedules were used for 312 PWPD. Statistical procedures included factor analysis, chi-square tests and structural equation modelling.
Main findings: Meta-inferences were formulated relating to the mixed methods research. The overarching message conveyed discord in respect of several dimensions, between the perceptions of employers, those of persons with physical disabilities and the theory. Employers are receptive to employing persons with disabilities but conflicted about their management, competence and accommodation. They are reportedly unfamiliar with disability matters, and cannot locate qualified candidates, while disability policies are not commonplace. Key national interventions encompass incentives for employers to hire PWD, tax concessions and amendment of the BBBEE scorecard points system. Important interventions at organisational level entail training in disability matters across the board, as well as disability-related policies. At individual level, PWPD need training in job-seeking techniques, effective avenues to secure work, accommodation and assistive technology, and skills.
To extend the mixed methods research, industrial sectors were compared and latent constructs sought in separate analyses.
Main contributions: Different perspectives gleaned from employers in various sectors, PWPD, disability advocacy organisations and associated groups; expansion of the literature on disability employment; structural equation modelling that produced latent constructs which underlie the causes of exclusion of PWPD from employment and enhance understanding of those aspects with a direct bearing on employers’ receptivity to hiring PWPD.
The findings could catalyse national and organisational policy frameworks to promote inclusion in the workplace. Public policy makers could utilise the findings to devise strategies that would motivate employers to hire PWPD. Organisational policies, with practical guidelines, should be formulated relating to recruitment of PWPD and disability training for staff. The different types of disabilities and job categories in which employers would be willing to appoint PWD were ascertained. / Oriëntering: Die studie het ondersoek ingestel na liggaamlike ongeskiktheid ten opsigte van indiensneming.
