The spoils of war : accounting for the missing children of Argentina's "Dirty War"

Gandsman, Ari. January 2001 (has links)
During the military dictatorship in Argentina (1976--1983), 30,000 civilians disappeared. Most of these people were taken by the military to clandestine prisons where they were tortured and killed. The children of these victims were also seized, and pregnant women were kept alive long enough to give birth. An estimated five hundred infants and young children of the disappeared were given for adoption to highly connected families. This thesis consists of a historical background of these events and then offers a series of explanations as to why the military did this.

In this thesis, we use Argentina’s cinematography developed since the democratic opening, and investigate its discursive behavior behind the debates (over the memories of military repression and its sequels) which have made the past the object of an insoluble dispute. We make use of categories taken from literary criticism, philosophy, social psychology and psychoanalysis to scrutinize distinct and confronting memories in films, and to understand the way they articulate the past in different contexts, as well as the urgent demands they responded to and the forces expressed in them.

The last argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983) caused the exile of thousands of citizens, creating great impact in society and huge wounds that do not easily closed. However, great as it has been the importance of exile in the 1970s, his voice was silenced in memory of dictatorial years. This thesis aims to understand the collaboration of the press in this silencing. At democratization ¿ when the history and memory of the military dictatorship still were crawling ¿ the media played an important role in the building of the National Reorganization Process¿s knowledge. Thus, we analyze the transmitted news about exile by Clarín and La Nación, realizing how the image drawn by them helped to tarnish the figure of the outcasts in society, relegating them to a kind of historiographical and memorialistic limbo. Analyzing the vocabulary used by the newspapers to describe the exiles, as well as the characters identified by them as examples of this phenomenon, besides the relation established in its pages between expatriates, amnesty and guerrilla, we aim to understand a little more about the motivations that led to the silencing of the argentine exile, collaborating on the repositioning of the victims before their society and especially in their history / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História

Ramos, Paula da Silva. January 2018 (has links)
In the second half of the nineteenth century, the cultural magazines in Latin America highlighting certain visions of society, identity projects and discussions about national history and literature. The Nueva Revista de Buenos Aires was an exponent of this type of publication, acting in the formation of a cultural nationalism in Argentina, but also distinguished by having a Latin American concern, which would be characteristic of magazines published in the following decades. Vicente Quesada and his son, Ernesto Quesada, idealizers and directors of the journal, sought to answer a central question: was there an Argentine and Latin American cultural tradition or would it be necessary to forge it? We aim to analyse the elaboration of a project of Argentine national identity promoted by Vicente and Ernesto Quesada, as wel as the performance of those intellectuals as cultural mediators in Latin American scope / Doutor
