A DWT Based Perceptual Video Coding Framework - Concepts, Issues and Techniques

Mei, Liming, james.mei@ieee.org January 2009 (has links)
The work in this thesis explore the DWT based video coding by the introduction of a novel DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) / MC (Motion Compensation) / DPCM (Differential Pulse Code Modulation) video coding framework, which adopts the EBCOT as the coding engine for both the intra- and the inter-frame coder. The adaptive switching mechanism between the frame/field coding modes is investigated for this coding framework. The Low-Band-Shift (LBS) is employed for the MC in the DWT domain. The LBS based MC is proven to provide consistent improvement on the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of the coded video over the simple Wavelet Tree (WT) based MC. The Adaptive Arithmetic Coding (AAC) is adopted to code the motion information. The context set of the Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (ABAC) for the inter-frame data is redesigned based on the statistical analysis. To further improve the perceived picture quality, a Perceptual Distortion Measure (PDM) based on human vi sion model is used for the EBCOT of the intra-frame coder. A visibility assessment of the quantization error of various subbands in the DWT domain is performed through subjective tests. In summary, all these findings have solved the issues originated from the proposed perceptual video coding framework. They include: a working DWT/MC/DPCM video coding framework with superior coding efficiency on sequences with translational or head-shoulder motion; an adaptive switching mechanism between frame and field coding mode; an effective LBS based MC scheme in the DWT domain; a methodology of the context design for entropy coding of the inter-frame data; a PDM which replaces the MSE inside the EBCOT coding engine for the intra-frame coder, which provides improvement on the perceived quality of intra-frames; a visibility assessment to the quantization errors in the DWT domain.

Two- and Three-Dimensional Coding Schemes for Wavelet and Fractal-Wavelet Image Compression

Alexander, Simon January 2001 (has links)
This thesis presents two novel coding schemes and applications to both two- and three-dimensional image compression. Image compression can be viewed as methods of functional approximation under a constraint on the amount of information allowable in specifying the approximation. Two methods of approximating functions are discussed: Iterated function systems (IFS) and wavelet-based approximations. IFS methods approximate a function by the fixed point of an iterated operator, using consequences of the Banach contraction mapping principle. Natural images under a wavelet basis have characteristic coefficient magnitude decays which may be used to aid approximation. The relationship between quantization, modelling, and encoding in a compression scheme is examined. Context based adaptive arithmetic coding is described. This encoding method is used in the coding schemes developed. A coder with explicit separation of the modelling and encoding roles is presented: an embedded wavelet bitplane coder based on hierarchical context in the wavelet coefficient trees. Fractal (spatial IFSM) and fractal-wavelet (coefficient tree), or IFSW, coders are discussed. A second coder is proposed, merging the IFSW approaches with the embedded bitplane coder. Performance of the coders, and applications to two- and three-dimensional images are discussed. Applications include two-dimensional still images in greyscale and colour, and three-dimensional streams (video).

Μελέτη και υλοποίηση αλγορίθμων συμπίεσης

Γρίβας, Απόστολος 19 May 2011 (has links)
In this thesis we study some data compression algorithms and implement them. The basic principles of coding are mentioned and the mathematical foundation of information theory is presented. Also different types of codes are presented. Then the Huffman coding and arithmetic coding are analyzed in detail. Finally, the two codings are implemented on a computer using the C programming language in order to compress text files. The resulting files are compared with files that are compressed using commercial programmes, the causes of differences in the efficiency are analyzed and useful conclusions are drawn.

Lossless medical image compression through lightweight binary arithmetic coding

Bartrina Rapesta, Joan, Sanchez, Victor, Serra Sagrsità, Joan, Marcellin, Michael W., Aulí Llinàs, Francesc, Blanes, Ian 19 September 2017 (has links)
A contextual lightweight arithmetic coder is proposed for lossless compression of medical imagery. Context definition uses causal data from previous symbols coded, an inexpensive yet efficient approach. To further reduce the computational cost, a binary arithmetic coder with fixed-length codewords is adopted, thus avoiding the normalization procedure common in most implementations, and the probability of each context is estimated through bitwise operations. Experimental results are provided for several medical images and compared against state-of-the-art coding techniques, yielding on average improvements between nearly 0.1 and 0.2 bps.

For demanding applications, for example image or video processing, there may be computations that aren’t very suitable for digital signal processors. While a DSP processor is appropriate for some tasks, the instruction set could be extended in order to achieve higher performance for the tasks that such a processor normally isn’t actually design for. The platform used in this project is flexible in the sense that new hardware can be designed to speed up certain computations. This thesis analyzes the computational complex parts of JPEG2000. In order to achieve sufficient performance for JPEG2000, there may be a need for hardware acceleration. First, a JPEG2000 decoder was implemented for a DSP processor in assembler. When the firmware had been written, the cycle consumption of the parts was measured and estimated. From this analysis, the bottlenecks of the system were identified. Furthermore, new processor instructions are proposed that could be implemented for this system. Finally the performance improvements are estimated.
