Effects of nitrogen fertilizer rate and irrigation on the annual culture of globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) in Quebec

Husain, Saima January 2003 (has links)
During 1995 and 1996, experiments with globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) were conducted in southwestern Quebec (lat. 45° 26 'N long. 73° 56 'W) to determine the optimum nitrogen fertilizer requirements and irrigation levels and to evaluate two widely grown cultivars for their suitability to Quebec regions. In order for flowering to occur plants must undergo a vernalization period. In 1995, plants received 32 chilling hours, an amount sufficient for 89 % Imperial Star plants and 39 % of Green Globe Improved to produce buds. In 1996, plants received 72 chilling hours, an amount sufficient for 94% of Imperial Star and 81 % Green Globe Improved plants to flower. Imperial Star produced 3 marketable lateral buds per plant compared to 2 buds per plant for Green Globe Improved in 1995. Both cultivars in 1996 produced 2 marketable lateral buds per plant. The average bud weight was higher for both cultivars in 1996 compared to 1995. Total yield was significantly higher with regular irrigation compared to variable irrigation. Nitrogen applications above 100 kg N/ha did not significantly increase weight of buds in both years suggesting that that this amount was sufficient for our culture situation. Imperial Star appeared to be a significant improvement over Green Globe Improved plants grown from seed.

Application of gibberellic acid (GA3) and lipo-chitin oligosaccharides (LCOs) on annual production of globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) in southwestern Quebec

Yang, Yang, 1973- January 2002 (has links)
The effect of the time of application of Gibberellic Acid (GA3) and Lipo-Chitin Oligosaccharides (LCOs) on annual production of globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) cultivars 'Imperial Star' and 'Green Globe' was studied in 2000 and 2001. In order for flowering to occur plants must undergo a period of vernalization. In 2000, plants received 54 chilling (vernalizing) hours, an amount sufficient to induce flowering in 100% of the Imperial star and 25% of the Green Globe control plants. Applications of 25ppm GA3 at the 6 and 10-leaf stage reduced the time to flowering by 11 days, increased uniformity of flower bud production, and also increased yield of Imperial Star. GA3 had no significant effect on Green Globe plants. LCO fraction C (an identified and collected nod factor peak in retention time of 32.56 minutes) had minimal effect on growth and development for both cultivars in 2000. In 2001 plants received no vernalizing temperatures and in addition were exposed to 89 hours of temperatures greater than 32°C which could devernalize the plants. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Jancevičius, Darius 15 June 2009 (has links)
By means of Standard methods the quantity of dry substance, soluble dry substance, total, reducing sugar, sucrose, raw fibre, raw proteins, amino acids also mass losses were estimated. For statistic analysis arithmetic average and standard deviation was calculated using MC EXCELL. To evaluate data validity statistic (P≤0,05) program „Statistica“ were used. It was established, that after four storage month the amount of dry matter in tubers which have been storage in polypropylene bags was 2,2 time bigger if compare those with tubers in peat or sand. Essential largest losses amounts of soluble dry matter, raw fibre also raw proteins (correspondingly 4,0%, 1,5 % and 4%) have been estimated in tubers which were storage in polypropylene bags. According results the essential smallest amounts of total saccharides, also sucrose where accumulated in tubers after two moth independent where they have been storage. Essential largest amounts of reducing sugars during all storage period have been estimated in tubers which were storage in polypropylene bags. During all storage period independent storage method the largest indispensable amino acid arginine also replaceable glutamine and the smallest amounts of methyonine and tyrosine have been established. The smallest mass losses during all storage period have been identify... [to full text]

Romero Yslachin, Alejandra Xiomi, Ventosilla Laverio, Yady Elizabeth 01 October 2020 (has links)
International trade presents many advantages, which are, in the first place, the promotion of the diversification of the exportable offer. Significantly, the insertion of local products in new markets means greater economic growth. Undoubtedly, the implementation of the Peru - United States Free Trade Agreement in 2009 consolidated free access for agricultural products. For this, the trade policy instrument such as the present Free Trade Agreements allowed Peru commercial access to one of the largest markets in the world. The importance of free trade and access for agricultural products is highlighted, which brings Peru closer to different world production chains and, in this way, “The great opportunity for Agriculture” is presented. This is certified and promoted by the agribusiness sector and public sector institutions with their free trade legitimation mechanisms that give support and access to implement its operation. The objective of this investigation is to analyze the commercial factors that influenced exports under tariff heading 20.05.99.1000, prepared or preserved artichokes, during the years 2008 - 2019, within the framework of the Peru-United States FTA. For this, it is used a mixt research approach. On the one hand, it is used a qualitative approach, in which the influence of the Peru-United States Free Trade Agreement and the certification systems are analyzed as factors that influenced the flow of exports of canned artichokes. On the other hand, the causal and correlational quantitative approach is used using econometric techniques based on time series with monthly information from 2008 to 2019. The findings of this research show that the variation in exports of canned artichokes is mainly due to the signing of the Peru-United States FTA trade agreement, the certification systems and determinants of the international market such as the demand for the product by the United States and its national production. / Tesis
