Showing the textures of earth\'s essence: initial development and creative praxis of the art teacher.

Sumaya Mattar Moraes 16 March 2007 (has links)
The present research analyses the relations between the teachinglearning process of hand-made ceramics and the initial development of art teachers, based on the contributions derived from the reflective perpspective in teacher\'s development, such as the epistemology of practice based on reflectionin-action, by Schön, collective reflection in learning communities, by Zeichner, and the idea of educative practice as an experimental and hypothetical process, by Stenhouse. Two ceramic artists, namely Isabel Mendes da Cunha and Shoko Suzuki, had their production mode as well as knowledge transmission investigated, bearing in mind that both artists, each one connected to a specific traditional universe, focus on methodological values and components of the teaching-learning process they are in charge of. Such artists are also concerned not only with the role of the physical, social and cultural environment in their productions but also with the relations established between the latter and formal education as well as the preservation and renovation of techniques, materials, procedures and aesthetic patterns along generations. Knowledge derived from the building of hand-made artifacts encompasses ethical and humanistic principles and values that transcend not only large scale production, typical of the industrial society, but also the reiteration of techniques as well as didatic and artistic procedures, still present in the art teaching-learning proposals developed within the school environment, thus revealing essential elements in the finding of the humanistic dimension underlying art-education. Permeated by team production and dialogue, the direction of traditional workmanship learning processes by a master artisan is capable of unleashing creative praxis in the aprentices who, added to a job satisfaction feeling, will also develop productive procedures of their own. In such processes, experimentation, directed both at seeking new constructive possibilities and encountering an individual poetical path, cohabit harmoniously with the preservation of essential knowledges passed on from one generation to another. Bearing in mind the development of a theoretical and practical formative process involving students of the visual art teachers\' course from a private university institution in the city of São Paulo, the possibillities of the formative components of the course directed at practice - namely the teaching practice as well as the supervisioned probation period - were investigated to confirm whether they might contribute to the establishment of a creative praxis among prospective art teachers. The process aimed at conscience raising as regards the social role, creative competence and the involvement of future teachers in relation to works of art and education, including components observed in the hand-made learning environment, such as dialogue, experimentation, team work and artistic practice. Impelled by the features and needs presented by elementary as well as high school students from a government run school, an additional ingredient was added to the process, namely action research.

An assessment of computer utilization by graphic design professionals in Thailand

Disatapundhu, Suppakorn 01 June 1993 (has links)
The uses of computer technology in the fields of art and graphic design in Thailand were investigated for the purpose of identifying levels of current computer use from 280 responses to a specifically designed questionnaire among: 1) full-time graphic design educators, 2) art and design students, and 3) graphic design directors in professional business positions. The study instrument consisted of a questionnaire developed by the researcher, reviewed by a panel of seven experts selected by the Department of Creative Arts, Chula-longkorn University. The panel verified content-related evidence to ensure the validity of the instrument. Appropriate statistical procedures were implemented to develop responses to questions of interest. Analysis of the data showed that a majority of educators, students, and design professionals supported the use of computer in their professions and/or coursework, and that majorities of the same groups made regular use of computers. Subject to differences in rank ordering of computer usage among population groups, majorities from each group agreed that publications and graphics constituted the area of greatest use. A majority of the population agreed that computers helped to improve efficiency within the studio environment, and there were only slight differences among the three groups in generalized support of the use of computers within art and design curricula. All groups agreed that educational emphasis should be placed at the level of the baccalaureate degree, subject to the possible integration of computer training at all educational levels. Students reflected the highest percentage of use frequency, followed in order by professionals and educators. Each group reflected its own specific concerns in perceptions of major barriers to the use of computers in graphic design fields: Educators noted the lack of budgetary resources to install and maintain computers; students noted the lack of computer availability for hands-on experience; and design professionals perceived a lack of opportunity to attend training courses. Overall, the results of this study indicated that significant differences existed between groups representing academic fields (i.e., educators and students) and graphic design professionals for all criteria measured. / Graduation date: 1994

Testing for critical thinking skills in selected courses

Park, Jean S. (Jean Salvevold) 26 April 1993 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to assess the gain in critical thinking skills with a consideration of grade point averages during a semester in two high school home economics courses, and one language arts course which was used as a control group. The study was conducted by administering the California Critical Thinking Skills Test: College Level (CCTST) as a pretest and a posttest to students (n = 101) in three classes; Food Science, (grades 10 -12), Nutrition and Food Preparation, (grades 10 -12), and Intermediate Composition, (grade 1l). The study utilized a two-way fixed analysis of covariance design. The dependent variable was the adjusted CCTST posttest score. Independent variables consisted of grade point average (two levels, those students with g.p.a.'s of 2.75 or above and those with g.p.a.'s below 2.75), and class grouping (three levels, including Food Science, Intermediate Composition and Nutrition and Food Preparation). The covariate was the CCTST pretest score. Analyses were performed by SPSS/PC+, with covariate adjustment using the pretest as an influence on posttest scores. After adjustment by the covariate (pretest score), students with higher g.p.a.'s were found to be significantly higher on CCTST mean scores. No statistically significant main effect was found for levels of class group. In addition, no statistically significant interaction was observed between levels of class groups and grade point average. As a result of the findings, it is concluded that the students did not have statistically significant gain in critical thinking skills in any of the tested classes as assessed by the CCTST. There is a great need for students to learn critical thinking skills. Efforts must be included in the training of teachers so that they can guide students in learning critical thinking skills. An effort must be made to adjust lessons and change pedagogy so that students' critical thinking skills can be improved at the high school level. / Graduation date: 1993

Developing transparency masters for Product and Manufacturing System Design to support Indiana's industrial technology education curriculum

Apple, Steven David January 1988 (has links)
The purpose of this creative project is to develop transparency masters for the course, Product and Manufacturing System Design, as outlined in the Indiana Industrial Technology Education Curriculum Guide. Since the curriculum's acceptance, there has been a need for visual instructional material to support the new courses. The author identified this need by assembling a committee to advice his creative project and thus developed instructional media in the form of transparency masters. Now that the transparency masters are developed, instructors in the field of industrial technology education may now benefit by utilizing the materials to help convey the information to their students. / Department of Industry & Technology

Status of Industrial Arts Programs in Texas Secondary Schools in Regard to Physically Handicapped Students and Attitudes of Industrial Arts Teachers Toward the Physically Handicapped

Swanson, Robert D. 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to ascertain the status of Texas secondary school industrial arts programs in regard to serving physically handicapped students and to analyze the attitudes of industrial arts teachers toward the physically handicapped students in industrial arts classes. The purposes of this study were, (1) to describe the nature and extent of participation by industrial arts programs in Texas secondary schools in complying with federal and state laws concerning the education of handicapped children, and (2) to acquire and interpret information which may be included in college courses for preparing industrial arts teachers and/or in-service programs for industrial arts teachers. Among the major findings revealed by an analysis of the data are the following. 1. Of the 366 industrial arts teachers surveyed, 86 per cent had no pre-service courses and 79 per cent had no in-service instruction concerning handicapped students; however, 67 per cent had experience teaching physically handicapped students. 2. Of the 37,659 students who were served by 355 industrial arts teachers during the 1977-78 school year, 727, or 2 per cent, were physically handicapped; 171 students were in separate special classes and 566 were integrated into regular classes. 3. Of the 727 physically handicapped students, 47 per cent attended senior high schools; 87 per cent attended schools with an enrollment of over 550 students; 83 per cent were in an urban or suburban educational setting; and the four predominate industrial arts areas in which they were enrolled are, in order: Drafting, Woodworking, General Shop, and Metalworking. 4. The attitudes of industrial arts teachers toward physically handicapped students and the attitudes of industrial arts teachers toward the integration of physically handicapped students were slightly positive. The industrial arts teachers' attitude toward the potential success of physically handicapped students in the world of work was positive. The industrial arts teachers' assessment of their own competencies to teach physically handicapped students was neither positive nor negative. 5. The attitudes of the industrial arts teachers were not significantly influenced by their age, education, teaching experience, type of school organization, type of educational setting or total enrollment of the schools in which they taught. Female teachers and teachers with experience in teaching physically handicapped students were significantly more positive in their attitudes toward the physically handicapped.

Creative Measures: Access to Arts Education in Oregon Public Schools / Access to Arts Education in Oregon Public Schools

Collins, Sarah K. 06 1900 (has links)
x, 83 p. : col. ill. / A growing body of research documents the benefits of learning in and through the arts, from academic achievement to personal efficacy. Federal law recognizes the arts as a core subject area for K-12 public schools, and Oregon content standards articulate sequential expectations of what all students should know and be able to do in the disciplines of music, theater, dance, and visual arts. Despite these statutory commitments, little is known about the actual condition of arts education in Oregon public schools. This study mines existing data from the Oregon Department of Education to: 1) establish baseline measures of access to arts education during the 2009-2010 academic year; and 2) identify relationships between access and other school characteristics such as geographic location, school type, and Title I designation. This study's findings hold significant implications for state policy, and its unique methodology can inform the wider field of arts education policy research. / Committee in charge: Dr. Jean Stockard, Chair; Dr. Terri Ward, Member; Dr. Lori Hager, Member

Abstract: The school inclusive process regards not only the opportunity of performing teacher-proposed activities in the class, but also with students participating in and creating a social relationship network with their classmate. The aim of this study was to analyze the inclusive process of children with disabilities in physical education class, identifying their obstacle and facilities to keep up with classes contents and with building a social network with their peers. Students from a Brazilian public school with and without disabilities served as subjects of this study during 2007. Systematic observations of physical education classes were performed during school year, as well as application of a sociometric test in two different moments. Systematic observations aimed to identify obstacles and facilities related to the classes contents, peer and teacher relationship and with class environment that students with disabilities found. Sociometric test was designed to assess social structure developed during physical education classes. Students with disabilities did not show difficulties to understand and perform proposed activities. However, they did show difficulties in building reciprocal social relationships with their peers. Results indicate that inclusive process with these students did not really happen, hindering children with disabilities to fulfill educational goals proposed for physical education classes. / Mestrado / Atividade Fisica, Adaptação e Saude / Mestre em Educação Física

Procedimentos pedagogicos para o ensino das lutas : contextos e possibilidades / Pedagogical procedures for the martial arts teaching

Gomes, Mariana Simões Pimentel, 1982- 12 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Jose Julio Gavião de Almeida / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação Fisica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-12T13:52:16Z (GMT). / Abstract: Thinking of the martial Arts phenomenon usually leads us to a group of modalities, each one with its own history, philosophy and specific characteristics. Considering Martial Arts as a complex knowledge, legitimate of the physical education (P.E.) contend, we believe that the shattered teaching into modalities in the initiation process, leads to the restriction of the universe of possibilities Martial Arts can offer, not contemplating some of the Sports Pedagogy contexts and personages, such as people with disabilities. So, this study sought to comprehend and propose new pedagogical procedures around the Martial Arts teaching. For that we used semi structured interviews, colleting data from four P.E. teachers and masters in the modalities: Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo, Karate and Fencing. After the transcription, they were analyzed by the Enunciation technique, one of the Contend Analysis techniques. We realized that the Martial Arts have conditional principles (intentional contact, attack/defense fusion, opponent/target, unpredictability and rules) determinant for the understanding and reading of a combat's internal dynamic of any Martial Arts manifestation, which demands the tactical thinking and the technique creation for problem resolutions in a combat. This way, we could classify (approximation groups) and define Martial Arts as a P.E. knowledge, possible to be taught in the formal and non formal education, through a global method, preceding the specialized stage. The data show that the Martial Arts practice by people with disabilities happens in specific modalities (such as Judo and Wheelchair fencing) and leads to develop the students' creative potential as much as the teachers' in the teaching/learning process, however some students may better adapt to the movements of some modalities. We consider that from the method proposed in this study, it is possible to start the Martial Arts teaching emphasizing the "doing reasons", signifying the learning even more and permitting it to be explored in all contexts (gyms, clubs, schools) by the most different personages (children, adults, elderly, people with disability). / Mestrado / Atividade Fisica, Adaptação e Saude / Mestre em Educação Física
