Implementing music in an integrated arts curriculum for South African primary schoolsVermeulen, Dorette 17 October 2009 (has links)
Music Education as part of the learning area Arts and Culture is far from satisfactory in South African schools. Reasons for this include a highly sophisticated and complex curriculum (the revised National Curriculum Statement, 2002); the integration of four discrete arts forms into one learning area; and teacher training which is not always reflective of the teaching profession’s demands. The study was based on a mixed method design, investigating how teachers in best scenario schools implement music as part of the integrated learning area Arts and Culture. Interviews were held with various stakeholders in Music Education, including teachers currently involved with the presentation of the Arts and Culture learning area, lecturers at universities training students for Music Education, and policy makers such as subject advisors in the Arts and Culture learning area. Data was also collected by analysing commercially available resources for this learning area. Analysis of the data obtained revealed that few teachers in the Arts and Culture learning area are qualified in more than one art form. A major concern is that music is often omitted from regular classroom activities in the Foundation Phase due to teachers feeling pressurised by multiple assessment standards in learning areas such as Literacy and Numeracy. Another finding in all primary school phases was that the time spent on Music Education was far less than that spent on Visual Arts. Learners are often involved in projects collecting knowledge about music, but seldom involved in active music making experiences. Aspects such as different ways to integrate the arts into one learning area, generalist/specialist teacher training, as well as issues concerning product, process and performance during the delivery of the arts, were also investigated. The researcher drew from all the data to design a course for teacher training in Music Education as part of the learning area Arts and Culture. Recommendations include regular in-service teacher training courses; nationwide co-ordination of teacher training programmes and the establishment of a national council for Music Education. Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / The purpose of this interpretive study was to explore the perceptions of selected Namibian subject advisers on their role in supporting teaching and learning. There are limited studies on the roles of subject advisers in supporting instruction. Delivery of quality teaching and learning prompts subject advisers to support teachers. The study is important to build upon the body of literature on instructional support and how subject advisers elsewhere support instruction. International and national scholastic literature was interrogated to seek more insight into the research topic. This qualitative study was located within a phenomenological/interpretive paradigm. The study explored the purpose of subject advisory support, how teachers’ support needs are identified, the roles of subject advisers, character traits of subject advisers, formats of support used by subject advisers, and the challenges as well as support provided to subject advisers. The study was conducted at three Regional Offices of Education, Arts and Culture in Namibia and included ten subject advisers selected through purposive sampling. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Key findings emerged through the data analysis by identifying categories and themes. These findings emphasised that subject advisers understand the nature of instructional support differently. The findings revealed that subject advisers face challenges that make them less effective in teaching support. It was further evident that subject advisers receive limited support and that they need to be supported through training, provision of resources and reduction of workload. These conclusions and others informed the recommendations that are aimed at improving subject advisers’ practice. / Die doel van hierdie vertolkende studie was om die persepsies van uitgesoekte Namibiese vakinspekteurs oor hul rol in onderrig- en leerondersteuning te ondersoek. Die bestaande studies oor die rol van vakinspekteurs in onderrigondersteuning is beperk. Die lewering van gehalte-onderrig en -leer spoor vakinspekteurs aan om onderwysers te ondersteun. Hierdie studie is belangrik omdat dit op die bestaande literatuur oor onderrigondersteuning en hoe vakinspekteurs elders onderrig ondersteun, moet voortbou. Internasionale en nasionale skoolverwante literatuur is geraadpleeg om meer insig oor die navorsingsonderwerp te kry. Hierdie kwalitatiewe studie val binne ʼn fenomenologiese/vertolkende paradigma. Die studie het ondersoek ingestel na die doel van vakinspekterende ondersteuning, hoe onderwysers se ondersteuningsbehoeftes geïdentifiseer word, die rol van vakinspekteurs, karaktereienskappe van vakinspekteurs, ondersteuningsformate wat deur vakinspekteurs gebruik word, en die uitdagings wat vakinspekteurs te bowe moet kom sowel as die ondersteuning wat hulle ontvang. Die navorsing is gedoen by drie streekskantore van Onderwys, Kuns en Kultuur in Namibië, en tien vakinspekteurs is deur doelbewuste steekproefneming gekies vir hierdie doel. Die data is deur halfgestruktureerde onderhoude en dokumentontleding ingesamel. Sleutelbevindings het deur die data-ontleding aan die lig gekom deur die identifisering van kategorieë en temas. Hierdie bevindings beklemtoon dat vakinspekteurs die aard van onderrigondersteuning verskillend verstaan. Verder onthul die navorsingsresultate uitdagings wat vakinspekteurs minder doeltreffend maak in hul onderrigondersteuning. Dit was ook duidelik dat vakinspekteurs beperkte bystand kry en dat hulle ondersteun moet word deur opleiding, voorsiening van hulpbronne en verminderde werkslas. Recherche par le design / Face à l'impératif de transition écologique, il est essentiel de produire des connaissances et d’imaginer
des futurs préférables - écologiques et collectivement désirables - pour faciliter le passage à de
nouveaux modes de vie consommant radicalement moins de ressources. Les impacts
environnementaux méconnus et grandissants liés à nos activités numériques appellent à repenser cette
dimension afin de la conjuguer à des futurs plus écologiques. Alors que la métropole montréalaise
rayonne à l’international pour ses artistes numériques et son industrie du jeu vidéo, force est de
constater que le développement de la culture numérique y est déconnecté du projet de transition
écologique. Ces constats empiriques nous amènent à formuler un nouveau projet : faire de Montréal
une «métropole culturelle numérique durable». La formulation de cet horizon inconnu constitue une
opportunité de recherche à aborder par le design.
Cette opportunité nous a incités à réaliser un projet de recherche par le design visant à explorer les
futurs possibles pour faire de Montréal une métropole culturelle numérique durable en mobilisant
les approches du design participatif, de la prospective et du design critique. Cette recherche a
poursuivi deux objectifs principaux : explorer les futurs possibles pour Montréal en tant que
métropole culturelle numérique durable en générant des idées qui enrichissent cet inconnu et étudier
le croisement des approches théoriques en situation de projet. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, nous avons
d’abord mené une enquête par recherche bibliographique et entretiens semi-dirigés pour définir le
«numérique durable» et enrichir nos constats empiriques initiaux. Nous avons ensuite conçu un
dispositif participatif et créatif en mobilisant des méthodes de prospective et de design critique,
notamment pour produire des artefacts déclencheurs (des scénarios de prospectives accompagnés
d’affiches) racontant les futurs possibles de la métropole culturelle numérique durable de 2035. Le
dispositif a ensuite été utilisé lors de deux ateliers de codesign. Une interprétation des effets combinés
de la prospective, du design critique et du design participatif sur la performance générative et les
raisonnements de conception observés en atelier conclut le projet. La recherche fournit à la fois des
avenues pour penser Montréal en tant que métropole culturelle numérique durable en esquissant les
principes d’une nouvelle politique publique et une meilleure compréhension de l’intérêt du croisement
des approches du design participatif, de la prospective et du design critique. / Given the urgent need for a sustainable transition, it is essential to generate knowledge and envision
preferable futures - sustainable and collectively desirable - to facilitate the shift towards new lifestyles
consuming radically fewer resources. The unrecognized and growing environmental footprint of our
digital activities are calling for some rethinking in order to reconcile this dimension with greener
futures. While the city of Montreal is internationally recognized for its digital artists and video game
industry, it is also clear that the development of Montreal's digital culture is disconnected from the
ongoing sustainable transition. These empirical observations have led us to propose a new project: to
make Montreal a "sustainable digital cultural metropolis."
This opportunity sparked a research-through-design project aimed at exploring possible futures to
make Montreal a sustainable digital cultural metropolis, drawing on the approaches of
participatory design, foresight and critical design. This research had two main objectives: to explore
possible futures for Montreal as a sustainable digital cultural metropolis through the generation of
insights that enrich this unknown concept, and to study the interplay of the theoretical approaches in
the context of a project. To achieve these objectives, we first conducted an inquiry using desk research
and semi-structured interviews to define "digital sustainability" and enrich our initial empirical
observations. We then designed a participatory and creative device, mobilizing foresight and critical
design methods, to produce "trigger" artifacts (foresight scenarios accompanied by posters) depicting
the possible futures of the sustainable digital cultural metropolis of 2035. The device was then used in
two codesign workshops. An analysis of the interplay between foresight, critical design and
participatory design in relation with the generative outputs and design thinking processes observed in
the workshops concludes the project. The research provides new avenues to envision Montreal as a
sustainable digital cultural metropolis and drafts the principles of a new public policy as well as it
provides a better understanding of the benefits stemming from the interplay of participatory design,
foresight and critical design.

Indianapolis Arts and Culture in the Late Twentieth Century: The Origins, Activities, and Legacy of the Pan American Arts FestivalBlair, Lyndsey Denise 12 1900 (has links)
Indiana University--Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The purpose of this thesis is to discuss and explain the commitment to arts and culture in Indianapolis from the mid-1960s to the end of the 1980s by focusing on the origins, activities, and legacy of an extraordinary event in the history of Indianapolis’ arts community: the 1986-1987 Pan American Arts Festival. Early efforts by the City Committee, a local growth coalition comprised of several civic leaders, focused on the physical revitalization of downtown Indianapolis’ cultural landscape. The group’s work in this area, which was part of a larger downtown revitalization project, played an important role in the creation of the Pan American Arts Festival. Ultimately, the planning and administration of this festival had a significant impact on the city’s arts community as it shifted the arts and culture commitment from Indianapolis’ physical structures to the actual livelihood of the organizations housed within them.

This study is a systematic, objective investigation of educator empowerment, where the researcher explores the perspective of ABET educators. This study is presented against the backdrop of striking a balance between the conventional curriculum and Curriculum 2005 (OBE) because they exhibit a variety of challenges, anomalies and imbalances which led to the Revised National Curriculum Statements which will be implemented in 2006. It is informed by the fact that educators, if empowered, form an integral and central feature of changes in educational centres, especially in teaching adult learners to be able to assist their school-leaving children so as to improve provincial matric results, for example. The researcher focused on educators of ABET in Limpopo Province as the unit of analysis in this study. Interactive, cooperative, peer teaching, dialogic meditation, group and team teaching, constructivism and human resource development, reflective and multi-level approaches, are discussed with a particular focus on educator empowerment, including in-service training programmes. The researcher regards ”church settings” (her term) as inappropriate for effective teaching as they reduce educators to preachers and learners to congregants. This occurred as a result of the failure to recognise the importance of educator-learner, learner-learner and educator-educator interaction in the past curriculum. The study argues that the approaches mentioned are appropriate for this study.
Educator empowerment is a lived-in and continuous process, monitoring and evaluating of in-service training to ensure quality. It was therefore necessary to develop a research design that would make it possible to enable educators to implement the new curriculum. Qualitative research is based on an in-depth inquiry which captures an educator's personal perspectives and experiences. Focus groups and in-depth interviews, which exemplify qualitative methods, were seen to be the best research tools in gathering the data for this study.
The respondents, were UNISA ABET certificate students, and also professional educators at formal schools. They showed zeal in improving the educational situation. Their responses led to the model which has been developed in the thesis, culminating in uplifting the teaching profession and handling its multi-level led dynamic in an interactive and cooperative manner and reflecting in their experiences so that purposes of the National Qualifications Framework can be attained. / Educational Studies / D.Ed.
