Cultural specificity in the translation of popular fiction from english into croatian during the socialist and transition periods (1960-2010)

Veselica-Majhut, Snjezana 25 September 2012 (has links)

Combined Use of Models and Measurements for Spatial Mapping of Concentrations and Deposition of Pollutants

Ambachtsheer, Pamela January 2004 (has links)
When modelling pollutants in the atmosphere, it is nearly impossible to get perfect results as the chemical and mechanical processes that govern pollutant concentrations are complex. Results are dependent on the quality of the meteorological input as well as the emissions inventory used to run the model. Also, models cannot currently take every process into consideration. Therefore, the model may get results that are close to, or show the general trend of the observed values, but are not perfect. However, due to the lack of observation stations, the resolution of the observational data is poor. Furthermore, the chemistry over large bodies of water is different from land chemistry, and in North America, there are no stations located over the great lakes or the ocean. Consequently, the observed values cannot accurately cover these regions. Therefore, we have combined model output and observational data when studying ozone concentrations in north eastern North America. We did this by correcting model output at observational sites with local data. We then interpolated those corrections across the model grid, using a Kriging procedure, to produce results that have the resolution of model results with the local accuracy of the observed values. Results showed that the corrected model output is much improved over either model results or observed values alone. This improvement was observed both for sites that were used in the correction process as well as sites that were omitted from the correction process.

Nik&#257wiy Okiskinoh&#257m&#257wina = mother as teacher : a Cree First Nation's mother teaching through stories

Bighead, Mary Emily 25 September 2008 (has links)
This study described the stories of a First Nations mother and provides an interpretative analysis on how she used stories to teach Cree culture, language, and identity. The stories presented are in the stream of mother-daughter communication. The oral transmission of the Cree stories communicated through mother tongue form the basis of this work. It is through the analysis of my mother's stories that I have come to understand what it means to be a Cree woman. Throughout, we have a level of communication and understanding that has come full circle in appreciating my mother's ways as we collaborated to interpret our stories.
The literature reviewed presents a theoretical discussion which illuminates Aboriginal matriarchal voice. The literature review explores works within the historical, contemporary, literary, and feminists paradigms which speak from Aboriginal women and their stories. The literature includes the perspectives of Aboriginal authors and their views on epistemology. In this naturalistic study, I used the descriptive narrative approach to reflect on a mother's stories in the stream of day-to-day activity. I collected data using field notes gathered on-site, audio-tapes of stories from my mother's lived experience, and a reflective journal of observations and insights that linked theory and pedagogy. Themes were derived from the stories which illustrated a metaphysical, ecological, and cultural journey toward wholeness. These themes represent the ways story is used within the context of lived experience. Further, a cultural metaphor using the pattern of the flower symbolized a woman's connections with Cree knowledge. The study became an emancipatory narrative because it allowed a Cree woman's voice to be acknowledged.
Using storytelling as a narrative framework, I have found that the oral tradition is a fundamental communicative pattern for the Cree people. Further, the stories we share lead to growth and understanding of self as a Cree person. For this, the ways stories are told shape and form the basis of Cree knowledge. In this study, the use of analogies, symbolism, and metaphor are primary ways of coming to know.

Streamline Assisted Ensemble Kalman Filter - Formulation and Field Application

Devegowda, Deepak 2009 August 1900 (has links)
The goal of any data assimilation or history matching algorithm is to enable better reservoir management decisions through the construction of reliable reservoir performance models and the assessment of the underlying uncertainties. A considerable body of research work and enhanced computational capabilities have led to an increased application of robust and efficient history matching algorithms to condition reservoir models to dynamic data. Moreover, there has been a shift towards generating multiple plausible reservoir models in recognition of the significance of the associated uncertainties. This provides for uncertainty analysis in reservoir performance forecasts, enabling better management decisions for reservoir development. Additionally, the increased deployment of permanent well sensors and downhole monitors has led to an increasing interest in maintaining 'live' models that are current and consistent with historical observations. One such data assimilation approach that has gained popularity in the recent past is the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) (Evensen 2003). It is a Monte Carlo approach to generate a suite of plausible subsurface models conditioned to previously obtained measurements. One advantage of the EnKF is its ability to integrate different types of data at different scales thereby allowing for a framework where all available dynamic data is simultaneously or sequentially utilized to improve estimates of the reservoir model parameters. Of particular interest is the use of partitioning tracer data to infer the location and distribution of target un-swept oil. Due to the difficulty in differentiating the relative effects of spatial variations in fractional flow and fluid saturations and partitioning coefficients on the tracer response, interpretation of partitioning tracer responses is particularly challenging in the presence of mobile oil saturations. The purpose of this research is to improve the performance of the EnKF in parameter estimation for reservoir characterization studies without the use of a large ensemble size so as to keep the algorithm efficient and computationally inexpensive for large, field-scale models. To achieve this, we propose the use of streamline-derived information to mitigate problems associated with the use of the EnKF with small sample sizes and non-linear dynamics in non-Gaussian settings. Following this, we present the application of the EnKF for interpretation of partitioning tracer tests specifically to obtain improved estimates of the spatial distribution of target oil.

Effects of recombinant growth hormone on dietary protein assimilation and immunity in the black porgy ¡]Acanthopagrus schlegeli¡^

Doong, Jaan-Rong 06 July 2000 (has links)
The present study used Escherichia coli¡]BL21¡^that contained pET-23a-bpGH plasmids, to express black porgy growth hormone ¡]bpGH¡^. The bpGH was refolded at pH 11.3 in the presence of catalytic amounts of cysteine and purified by ion exchanger chromatography and gel filtration chromatography. The purified bpGH is a monomer and has a molecular weight of 22 kDa. Using the bpGH, the effects of the growth hormone on growth, essential amino acid deposition and nonspecific immunity in black porgy were studied. The experiment was a 4*3 ¡]diet*GH¡^ factorial design. Four experimental diets were formulated in that fish meal was replaced by the mixture of soya protein and gelatin so that fish meal / soya mixture = 100 / 0, 75 / 25, 50 / 50 and 25 / 75, respectively. GH treatments included non-injection, once per 3 days and once per 12 days. GH was injected intramuscularly at a dosage of 0.05 µg / g wet body weight. The growth trial lasted for 72 days. The results showed that GH administration significantly enhanced weight gain, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio and muscle methionine concentration of the fish. GH injection improved the growth performance of the fish fed low protein quality diets to a level equals to the groups fed high protein quality diets. These results indicate that GH injections enhanced the perferential absorption and deposition of the first limiting amino acid methionine from the diets. In addition, GH administration enhanced alternative complement activity and increased serum lysozyme concentration, implicating the enhancement of the immunity.

Le devenir des immigrés en France. Barrières et inégalités

Safi, Mirna 16 May 2007 (has links) (PDF)

Closet Space: Investigating Gay Identity through Advertising in Gay Media

Hanna, Jonathan A. 14 May 2010 (has links)
The objective of this research was to examine advertising in gay media publications, namely, The Advocate, in order to assess how advertising corresponds with gay identity formation. This study differed from previous inquiries in that the application of hegemony theory formed the basis of the project and was used as a tool to explicate the preponderance of certain images in gay media advertising and what they signify for gay men. Likewise, a phenomenological method of analysis was applied to the advertisements in order to render them more accessible as aesthetic and literary mediums. Classifying the advertisements according to their notional basis resulted in the partitioning of the ads into groups or "parables" of advertising, a method of classification which mimics historical categories recognized in American history and culture. The sum of the project emphasizes the hegemonic structures that characterize gay male images within a broader GLBT sociocultural framework.
