Effects of a neuromuscular warm-up program on specific components of athletic performance in youth soccer players

Large, Kristyn Victoria 21 September 2018 (has links)
This study aimed to compare the acute effects of two independent warm-up (WU) protocols, neuromuscular warm-up (NMWU) and standardized soccer warm-up (STWU), on three soccer-specific performance tests in adolescent male and female soccer players. Substantial evidence exists of NMWU programs reducing Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries, particularly in soccer. Regardless of this reduced risk of injury, NMWU program adherence is low. Enhanced athletic performance has been reported to encourage consistent WU adherence more effectively than injury risk, especially in youth athletes. Therefore this study compared the effects of a NMWU and a STWU on physical performance in youth soccer players to encourage adherence and implementation. Following familiarization with a locally developed NMWU, 35 (11 female, 24 male) student-athletes (mean age: 14.7 yrs) from two high school-based soccer academies completed four sessions over a two week period evaluating the effects of WU on three soccer specific performance tests. Performance tests included T-test (agility), vertical jump (Peak Power Output), and 20-m sprint (acceleration and speed). The first week of testing consisted of NMWU familiarization, Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1, and the collection of physical characteristics. The second week of testing consisted of two testing sessions, WU protocols were randomly assigned to the testing sessions ahead of time (session 1: STWU; session 2: NMWU) and were completed at the beginning of the session prior to testing. A series of five two-tailed repeated measures ANOVA were conducted to determine significant differences in WU means. The overall group demonstrated a significant increase in Peak Power Output (p=0.001) and agility (p=0.016) following the STWU compared to the NMWU. Neither WU demonstrated a measurable effect on 5m,10m, and 20m times. The findings of this research may have been influenced by the single use of the NMWU which may have limited the NMWU potential to enhance the three soccer-related performance tests. In order to explore the effectiveness of NMWU on performance enhancement as a means of improving its adherence in youth players, further research implementing NMWU over an extended period of weeks or months should be carried out, consistent with studies demonstrating NMWU impact on ACL injury risk in youth and adults. / Graduate

Validity and reliability of an objective test of cricket skills

Stretch, Richard Aldworth January 1985 (has links)
This study was conducted to assess the validity and reliability of four self-designed, objective tests of cricket batting, bowling, fielding and general ability skills. The batting test requires the batsman to hit a suspended ball at a target area as many times as possible in 60 seconds. His score is doubled to give his score for the batting test. In the bowling test the bowler is required to bowl ten balls at target areas marked on the pitch. Each delivery is recorded to give him a score out of 100. The fielding test requires the fielder to catch and field seven balls in a predetermined sequence. Each fielded ball that is not thrown through the target area incurs a penalty of three seconds. The total time taken is used to obtain the fielding test score out of 100. In the general ability test the player is required to hit a ball up and down twenty-five times. He then has to run along a predetermined path and field three balls and then bowl three balls at a target. A penalty of three seconds is added onto the time taken for each ball that does not pass through the target area. The actual score, out of 100, is determined from the total time taken. To determine the validity of the objective tests of batting, bowling, fielding and general ability, 155 subjects were subjectively assessed in these four categories by experienced coaches. The four objective tests were then conducted on these subjects and the scores compared. Forty-four subjects were assessed by experienced and inexperienced testers to determine the reliability of the tests when administered by different testers. To determine the reliability of the tests when repeatedly administered by one tester 23 subjects were assessed on five consecutive days. Significant correlations (p < 0,05) were found for the tests of validity between subjective and objective assessment (0,43 to 0,81) and the test for objectivity between experienced and inexperienced testers (0,41 to 0,78). A significant improvement (p < 0,05) in scores occurred during repeated testing, but most of this improvement took place between the first two tests. The results indicate that the tests are valid and reliable tests of cricket batting, bowling, fielding and general ability, if sufficient pre-test practice is allowed.

The development and evaluation of a dynamic elastomeric fabric orthosis to support the management of athletic pelvic/groin injury

Sawle, Leanne January 2015 (has links)
Athletic pelvic/groin injuries can be difficult to define, diagnose and therefore manage. These injuries are often the result of multifactorial dysfunction, making them susceptible to becoming chronic. Transverse pelvic belts have shown effectiveness in reducing pain and improving function in athletes with pelvic/groin pain, but there may be better alternatives. Exploring different pelvic belt configurations with athletes with pelvic/groin pain confirmed the role of a transverse belt but also found that diagonal belts produced significantly (< 0.05) greater effects upon clinical measures of pain and function. Dynamic elastomeric fabric orthoses (DEFOs) are Lycra®-based orthoses theorised as providing stability and enhancing proprioception. A DEFO was designed to apply diagonal force to the pelvic girdle and mimic transverse belt application. In a series of single case studies the DEFO was found to have beneficial effects upon pain and/or function in selected athletes with pelvic/groin pain. Athletes’ subjective reports suggested that balance and power may have also been positively influenced. Further work exploring appropriate measures of athletic balance led to the investigation of the intra-rater reliability of a functional measure; the multiple single-leg hop-stabilisation test. Good to excellent reliability (ICC = 0.85; CI 0.61-0.90) confirmed this measure as being reliable for use in a future study, and highlighted relationships with other factors such as age and training status. The findings of a pilot RCT indicated that with minor revisions this protocol could be effectively implemented in informing a future RCT. Findings also indicated that the DEFO led to moderate to large effect sizes on clinical measures (d = 0.6-1.1) of active straight leg raise and squeeze test force, and negligible to small effects on measures of power and functional balance (d = 0.1-0.3). This thesis therefore outlines the development and initial evaluation of a novel DEFO for supporting the management of athletic pelvic/groin injury. Further work is required to undertake a fully powered RCT, and to explore the mechanistic action of this DEFO.
