Musculoskeletal injuries are responsible for the shortness of career and competitive decline of high performance horses. Thus, it is mister understand the prevalence of injuries associated with the degree of commitment to keep on mind to prevent and minimize its consequences. This study, by analyzing the records of the Department of Radiology, Hospital Octavio Dupont (JCB / RJ) and the database of the Brazilian Stud Book was aimed to establish, initially, the connections between the main injury diagnosis, gender, age, member injured, location of lesion (1st stage). Subsequently, it was evaluated the degree of commitment of the competitive performance of such injuries through the categorization (2nd stage). In the first stage, there was prevalence of lesions in the male, aged of three to five years. Forelimbs, mainly the right, were the most frequently injured. Lesions located in the middle third of the limbs were frequently associated with fractures. Lesions located in the proximal aspect of forelimbs had high correspondence with females. Lesions in the left forelimbs and periostitis were associated with males aged over five years. In the second stage of analysis, there was found correspondence between the shortness of inactivity, after injury, with high of involvement with negative on the performance. It is concluded that the forelimb lesions were independent of the race track directions. The period of inactivity was decisive to explain the loss of performance. The categorization of performance variable was determinant to measure the horse athletic behavior.

In swimming, this is a tool used mainly between tests, aiming to obtain its short-term benefits. However, the effects of its systematic application and adjusted to the training demands remain uncertain, especially when compared to the placebo condition. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of cold-water immersion and its placebo condition when properly and systematically applied to training dynamics on perceptive, functional and performance parameters in swimming athletes. Methods: Randomized crossover clinical trial involving 20 male and female swimmers aged 12 to 20 years. The study was conducted in six weeks of training of the same mesocycle. During the five days of the week, the participants performed the training sessions, consisting of a physical training on the ground followed by the swim training. On Saturdays (after five sessions), the athletes were submitted to a testing session. The recovery interventions [cold water immersion (14 ± 1 ° C), term neutral water immersion (27 ± 1 ° C) as a placebo condition, and control condition] were applied at three weeks (weeks 2, 4 and 6) on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays between physical training and swimming training for 12 minutes, while weeks 1, 3 and 5 were considered baseline. Athletes were randomized according to gender and competitive level into distinct sequences (S1; S2; S3) in which they differed only by the order of ... Relationships of Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull Variables to Weightlifting PerformanceBeckham, G., Mizuguchi, S., Carter, C., Sato, K., Ramsey, Michael W., Lamont, H., Hornsby, G., Haff, G., Stone, Michael H. 01 October 2013 (has links)
Aim. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between weightlifting performance (snatch, clean and jerk, and total) and variables obtained from the isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP). Methods. Twelve weightlifters, ranging from novice to advanced, performed the IMTP 10 days after a competition. Correlations were used to evaluate relationships between variables of the IMTP and absolute and scaled competition results. Results. Unsealed competition results correlated strongly with IRFD (0-200ms: r=0.567-0.645, 0-250ms: r=0.722-0.781) while results correlated weakly with Peak IRFD (5ms window, r=0.360-0.426). Absolute peak force values correlated very strongly with absolute values for the competition performance (r=0.830-0.838). Force at 100ms, 150ms, 200ms and 250ms also correlated strongly with competition results (r=0.643-0.647, r=0.605-0.636, r=0.714-0.732, r=0.801-0.804). Similar findings were noted for allometrically scaled values. Conclusion. Measures of average IRFD probably represent a more relevant variable to dynamic performance than does Peak IRFD (5ms). Maximum isometric strength also is likely to have a strong role in weightlifting performance.

Investigating Life Stress Competitive Trait Anxiety and Competitive State Anxiety with Athletic Injury Occurrence in NCAA Division I Athletes.Ramella-DeLuca, Nikki Marie 01 December 2003 (has links) (PDF)
This study examined the relationship of life stress, competitive trait anxiety and competitive state anxiety, with injury occurrence in NCAA Division I athletic teams. Life stress was measured by the Life Events Survey for Collegiate Athletes. The Competitive State Anxiety Test and Marten’s Sport Competition Trait Anxiety Test calculated competitive anxiety.
After calculating means and standard deviations for each measure, a multiple regression was run. A two-way ANOVA was used to determine differences between sport and gender.
The results of the study indicated there was no effect of gender for trait anxiety, cognitive and somatic state anxiety or gender. A significant main effect was found between gender and self-confidence. There was no effect of gender for life stress. There was no effect of sport for cognitive state anxiety, somatic state anxiety, self-confidence, or life stress. The CSAI-2 self-confidence showed no significant difference between sport. No significant relationships were noted between injury score and any of the independent variables.

Protein intake, body composition and athletic performanceCase, Jennifer A. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Human Nutrition / Mark D. Haub / Background: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a growing sport that places competitors into specific weight classes to level the competition field. Athletes “cut weight” to compete in a weight class lower than their “walk around” weight. Techniques for cutting weight include dehydration, starvation and exercise in hot environments jeopardizing health and performance. Higher-protein diets (HPD) have been shown to improve weight loss by increasing satiety, thermogenesis, decreasing total energy intake, and maintain lean mass during periods of energy deficiency, such as weight loss. Research regarding the impact of HPD on performance is limited and conflicting.
Specific Aims: The central hypothesis for this study was: HPD diets will elicit greater weight loss and enhance body composition compare to tradition low-fat diets in non-obese, active individuals. The three specific aims of this study are: 1) examine the effects of HPD on weight loss, 2) evaluate the impact of HPD of athletic performance, and 3) determine the effectiveness of HPD for accelerated weight loss.
Methods: Military personnel participating in the Combatives program were recruited. Participants were assigned a HPD (40% CHO, 30% PRO, 30% fat), traditional low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet (65% CHO, 15% PRO, 20% fat), or an ad libitum diet for 12-day to 6-weeks depending on their training program. Fields tests for pre- and post-intervention measures of performance included: vertical jump and leg power index to measure explosive power, 600 meter shuttle run for anaerobic capacity and 1.5 mile run for aerobic capacity. Pre- and post-intervention of weight and body composition were determined using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Diet analysis software was used to determine nutrient intakes during the study. SPSS statistical software was used to determine descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, Pearson’s Correlations and one-way ANOVA.
Results & Conclusions: Due to the unanticipated high rate of dropout, statistical significance was difficult to determine, however, there was a trend for the HPD to elicit fat-free mass retention and it not negatively impact performance. Discrepancies in energy and nutrient intake made dietary comparison difficult. Future studies with larger samples and greater dietary control are needed to further evaluate the research goals of this study.

Effect of a Liquid Meal upon Performance in Selected Track and Field EventsGates, Paul La Vergne, 1922- 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to search for possible effects of the pre-competition meal. This problem had two primary facets: 1) to determine performance scores secured by college varsity track and field men under two different pre-competition meal conditions and to study the relationship of the meal last ingested before competition to the scores; 2) to determine the concern for certain psychological and psycho-physiological factors under each of the two pre-competition meal conditions.

The Influence of Psychological Stress and Personality upon Athletic Performance of Intercollegiate Tennis PlayersReed, Rebecca Lee 03 1900 (has links)
This investigation was designed to study coach and self-appraised groupings of intercollegiate tennis players who yield to stress and withstand stress and to determine if personality differences existed between groups. Subjects were 75 intercollegiate tennis players from Texas. A stress inventory and the Cattell Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire were instruments utilized in the study. Data were subjected to hierarchical profile-groupings, three-way analyses of variance, and a correlational analysis. Conclusions of the study were that intercollegiate tennis players and male and female players respond to stress differently; intercollegiate tennis players and male and female players who experience different levels of stress have different personalities; and players and coaches do not evaluate the ability to cope with stress similarly.
