Escobar Despessailles, Nadia January 2021 (has links)

Caregiving for Patients Diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer: An Examination of Distress and Relationships with Healthcare Providers Using Attachment Theory

Petricone-Westwood, Danielle 16 November 2020 (has links)
This thesis focuses on describing and investigating the experiences of caregivers of individuals with ovarian cancer. Caregivers are an essential part of cancer care, and yet they are not formally recognized as such. The special focus on these caregivers stems from the recognition that ovarian cancer is unique from more commonly studied diseases, with a poor prognosis and frequent recurrences. This thesis sought to study this understudied population. The thesis begins with a scoping review of existing literature that specifically investigated this population. From this study, it was confirmed that few studies had focused on this population, however the mapped literature suggested that these caregivers experienced significant compromises to their quality of life. Some preliminary studies identified a theme that the caregiving experience was influenced by the relationships with healthcare providers. This theme informed the second study of the thesis, that was a cross-sectional, correlational study that sought to recruit partner-caregivers of patients with ovarian cancer, a sample mostly of male-caregivers. This study sought to explore multiple facets of the caregiving experience as part of cancer care using the Cancer Caregiving Tasks, Consequences and Needs Questionnaire, measuring caregiver distress using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and collecting sociodemographic and proxy-reports of the patient’s medical information. A total of 82 partner-caregivers were recruited for the study, and our sample were mostly men, White, affluent and highly educated. Most of their partners were diagnosed with stage III or IV disease, and were treated with both surgery and chemotherapy. This study’s analysis found that caregiving workload, lacking information from healthcare providers, problems with the quality of information and communication with healthcare providers, lacking time for social relations due to caregiving, and needing more help from healthcare providers correlated with distress outcomes. The third investigation sought to further explore these relationships by measuring attachment insecurity, as assessed by a short, modified version of Experiences in Close Relationships Scale. Using the same sample data, hierarchical regression analyses were used to test whether general attachment avoidance or attachment anxiety moderated the relationship between the caregiving experiences and distress outcomes. These analyses revealed that attachment anxiety contributed to a portion of the variance in distress, however the experiences with the healthcare team explained a large portion of the variance of distress. Attachment anxiety was found to play a minor role moderating the relationship between needing more help from healthcare providers and anxiety, and attachment avoidance contributed a very small, moderating role between lack of time for social relations and distress. Together, these studies have demonstrated that caregivers of patients with ovarian cancer are understudied, however they experience significant levels of depression and anxiety. Their distress is highly affected by their reported experiences as part of the cancer care team, regardless of their predisposition to distress through attachment insecurity.

Attachment, Identity Processing Style, and Emotion Regulation Among Emerging Adults

Daleandro, Kaitlyn M 01 January 2022 (has links)
This study explores the relationships among parent, peer, and romantic attachment, identity processing style, and emotion regulation. Previous studies have revealed potential associations among each of the aforementioned factors (e.g., between identity and attachment as well as between attachment and emotion regulation), but this is the first study to examine the three factors together, putting emphasis on romantic attachment. It was predicted that attachment will vary depending on the interaction between identity processing style and emotion regulation. College students (N= 390) in psychology courses participated in an anonymous online survey for course credit. Parent attachment was significantly predicted by age, gender, cognitive reappraisal, the diffuse-avoidant identity style, and the normative identity style; peer attachment was significantly predicted by expressive suppression, the diffuse-avoidant identity style, and the informational identity style. Regarding romantic attachment, attachment-anxiety was significantly predicted by the diffuse-avoidant identity style and attachment-avoidance was significantly predicted by age and expressive suppression. Additional analyses and their theoretical implications are further discussed.

The Brontë Attachment Novels: An Examination of the Development of Proto-Attachment Narratives in the Nineteenth Century

McNierney, James 01 May 2016 (has links) (PDF)
John Bowlby’s work on attachment theory in the 1960s altered the cultural understanding of parent-child relationships. Bowlby argued that the ability for an individual to form attachments later in life, be that familial, romantic, or friendship is affected by whether or not that individual formed a strong attachment to a primary caregiver in early childhood. My thesis uses Bowlby’s theory as a critical lens to examine three novels by the Brontës: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë. I use this theory in order to demonstrate that these novels are what I have termed proto-attachment narratives, which is to say narratives about attachment before formal attachment theory existed, and, further, that they work to bridge the gap between the contemporary nineteenth-century debate on child rearing and Bowlby’s theory. In addition, I discuss how each of these novels exemplifies, complicates, and expands upon Bowlby’s theory in its own way. Wuthering Heights demonstrates the cyclical nature of damaged attachments and works to find a way to break from that cycle. Jane Eyre gives a clear understanding of an individual’s lifelong struggle with failed attachments and the importance of a balanced power dynamic to forming healthy attachments, and, finally, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall examines how even properly formed, healthy parent-child attachments can lead to development problems, if the power granted to those parental attachment figure is not used responsibly. I further theorize that we can use these novels as a starting point to discuss how we might define attachment narratives as a genre, as they hold many similarities with more clearly defined modern attachment narratives.

Supporters impact on brand management : A qualitative study on how supporters impact brand management in the SHL

Renault, Johan, Hulldin, David January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explain how supporters affect a team's brandmanagement. The theories and earlier research looked upon in this study areconnected to brand management, brand image, brand personality and theattachment theory. This study is interesting due to the fact that the sportsindustry is unique in comparison to other industries. In sports the customersare supporters that other industries do not have. A limited amount of researchabout supporters has been done, and they have not been clearly defined. Thisstudy used a qualitative research method and collected data from semistructured interviews with six different teams in the SHL. A thematic analysiswas performed to analyze and summarize the data. The summarized data wasthen compared and connected to our theoretical framework in order to try andanswer the purpose and research questions of the study. The managerialimplication of the study was that it showed that team managers in the SHLcommunicate through social media, events, and more, in order to have aconstant dialogue with supporters. The main theoretical contribution is thatsupporters can be connected to the attachment theory, and that brandmanagement in the sport industry might be defined along a B2S, “Business-toSupporter” perspective.

Resolving Attachment Injuries in Couples Using Emotionally Focused Therapy: A Process Study

Millikin, John W. 13 December 2000 (has links)
The current study identified attachment injuries in couples and developed a preliminary model for the resolution of attachment injuries using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). An attachment injury occurred when one partner betrayed or broke the trust of the other in a specific incident and that incident became a clinically recurring theme or stuck-point of task resolution. Couples with attachment injuries were identified by an expert clinician and the researcher. Subjects were couples with moderate to mild distress. The attachment injuries were resolved using EFT, an empirically validated approach to couples therapy. The model (N = 3) was developed using task analysis. Audiotaped segments of "best sessions" of marker events were reviewed by raters to determine change events throughout the therapy process. A rational, conceptual map of expected change was compared to an empirically developed map. The marker events emerged at the assessment, de-escalation, and resolution phases of treatment. Pre- and post-tests measured overall resolution of the attachment injury and process measures identified in-session changes. The results of this study yield a proposed theoretical model of change for couples who sustain an attachment injury. / Ph. D.

Moss, Erik, Kindkvist, Jimmy January 2016 (has links)
This paper investigates the perspective of managers' and processing staffs concerning young people living on a Home for care or living(HVB)- or Institutional board of the states- home (SiS - they can use lockable departments), and how they think youths are affected by the transfer between SiS and HVB. This study focus on factors that can affect young people's health - replacing youths between different nursing homes. The paper investigates how these replacements are performed/could be performed, as well as the underlying factors that might explain why a youth is being relocated. As a basis for our study, in addition to the literature and research in the field, we have conducted four interviews with personnel from HVB- and SiS- accommodations. We use the attachment theory and the Sense of coherence theory as a theoretical frame. The results show that there are shortcomings in the process of redeployment. All informants wanted more time to prepare the work of a youth who is about to move. A proposal from the informants, was that the process from decision to the actual moving should take between 3-6 months. This would give the staff in the new accommodation a chance to visit the youth and begin to build ties, before the move is implemented. The conclusion is that the transfer has an important role in the treatment and the stay of the youth. At the same time, it is of great concern that there are no clear guidelines for how these replacements should be performed. If there would be more resources and clearer guidelines for how redeployments should be handled, it might perhaps reduce the number of shifts where young people are moving back to SiS. Today approximately one of four youth needs to move back.

Anknytningsstil och upplevelse av psykosocial arbetsmiljö / Attachment Style and experience of psychosocial work environment

Engblom, Teresia January 2016 (has links)
Introduction: Although attachment theory is widely studied within the field of developmental psychological research, work environment research frequently disregards attachment-related individual characteristics of co-workers when studying workplace environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of attachment style on the perception of psychosocial work environment. Research question: How does attachment style relate to the experience of demands, influence and social support at work? Method: Nurses and assistant nurses employed at the emergency departments, Skåne University Hospital (n = 218), were asked to answer the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ) and Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ). Results: A total of 135 questionnaires (62%) were included in the study. In the majority of the analyses no correlations were found between attachment style and experience of psychosocial work environment. A lower degree of perceived support from colleagues was, however, related to higher discomfort with closeness and relationships as secondary. An association between higher degree of perceived support from peers and higher degree of confidence in self and others was found. Securely attached individuals were less burdened by quantitative requirements and experienced more support from peers than insecure attached individuals. Discussion/conclusion: There is only a weak relationship between attachment style and experience of demands, influence and social support at work. This might partly be explained by the nature of the questionnaires, the homogeneity of the study population and missing cases. The statistically significant correlations that were found are supported by findings in previous studies. Resultat: 135 enkäter (62%) inkluderades i studien.

'Facing choices' : a mixed-methods approach to patients' experience of care and discharge in an inpatient mental health unit

Strachan, Jennifer Claire January 2012 (has links)
Objectives: This thesis addresses patients’ conceptualising of the experience of admission to and discharge from an inpatient mental health unit, and the role of measurable psychosocial constructs in this conceptualisation. Design: An embedded mixed-methods design was employed. Themes developed using thematic analysis were compared and contrasted with standardised assessment ratings. Methods: Twelve adult patients of an acute mental health unit took part in two separate interviews about their experience of admission and discharge, and completed standardised measures of anxiety and depression, social support, attachment style and illness beliefs. Interview data were analysed using social constructionist thematic analysis. Relationships between participants’ contribution to constructed themes and their responses to standardised assessments were discussed in the context of extant literature. Results: A total of fourteen themes were constructed, organised around a central theme of choices, planning and decision making. Many themes were comparable to existing constructs in attachment theory and the literature addressing illness appraisal, including mentalisation, the safe haven, internal working models, self as illness and shame. Standardised assessments supported and enhanced these interpretations. Conclusions: Understanding of the process and adaptation to the inpatient experience can be enhanced by reference to the concepts of attachment theory and social cognition. Incorporation of these concepts into current care practices and future service development may improve the inpatient experience.
