Saving Face(book): Effects of Interactions with Third Parties on Social Attractiveness of a Facebook Profile Owner

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine how a profile owner's (PO's) response to a friend's comment on Facebook impacts social attractiveness of the PO. A 3 (response type: denial, humble, no response) x 2 (sex of the participant) between-subjects experiment was conducted using 297 participants who were recruited from a large public university and a community college in the southwest United States. It was hypothesized that being humble and accepting of implied negative behavior statements would increase the social attractiveness of the profile owner compared to denial or no response. A one- way ANCOVA with social desirability as the covariate was used to analyze the data. Results were non-significant for the main effects of response type but were significant for the main effects of the sex of the participant with male participants finding the profile owners more socially attractive than female participants. The results suggest that a PO's response to a negative Friend comment does not impact the PO's social attractiveness. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Counseling 2014

Kritz Mossadek, Youness January 2016 (has links)

Vocal and facial attractiveness : general preferences and individual differences

Vukovic, Jovana January 2010 (has links)
To date, the majority of research on attractiveness judgements has focused on identifying factors that influence judgements of facial attractiveness.  This thesis reports a series of empirical studies that investigated the extent to which factors that are known to influence women’s preferences for masculine characteristics in men’s faces (e.g., measures of women’s attractiveness and personality traits attributed to masculine men) also influence women’s preferences for masculine characteristics in men’s voices.  These studies suggest that own attractiveness and perceptions of personality traits have similar effects on women’s face and voice preferences.  Additionally, further studies demonstrated that vocal cues signal information about women’s long term health and facial attractiveness and suggested that women’s masculinity preferences are affected by their circum-menopausal status (pre-menopausal versus post-menopausal).  Collectively, these findings present new evidence for the utility of deriving predictions about attractiveness judgements from evolutionary theories of mate choice.
