A Detailed Study of Selected Orchestral Excerpts for CelloMoyer, Susan Elizabeth 28 April 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to provide detailed information and instruction on the fifteen orchestral excerpts for cello most requested at orchestral auditions. The chosen excerpts were selected by compiling a master list of orchestral excerpts from the audition lists of all the Symphony Orchestras in ICSOM, ordering the list by the frequency in which the excerpts appear on the lists. The essay prepares an applicant to perform these excerpts at an orchestral audition. In the audition, each excerpt demonstrates the applicant's ability in one main area so that upon completion of the audition process, the audition committee has a clear picture of all aspects of the applicants' playing. This essay describes each excerpt in terms of that main focus, as well as the technical and musical elements that must be considered as part of the preparation toward a polished performance.

Although women have slowly been accepted in America's top orchestras, they are still a minority. Certain instrument sections remain predominantly male in spite of the implementation of blind auditions. Inconsistency in the use of the screen in blind auditions is partially responsible for the lack of women in orchestras, but the problem is seeded in cultural constructions that act as barriers for female brass, percussion and string bass players. Gender constructions have dictated that women should not play instruments that are loud, heavy or require physical exertion. Nonetheless, many women have shown that they are capable of performing as well as men on these instruments. Brass players are often the highest paid in an orchestra, thus women musicians face economic discrimination when they face bias at the hiring level or in the workplace.

Sensing Traditional Music Through Sweden's Zorn Badge : Precarious Musical Value and Ritual OrientationEriksson, Karin January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates the multiple and contested spaces of belonging that may be evoked by ritualised musical performance. It makes an ethnographic case study of the Zorn Badge Auditions in Sweden, in which musicians play before a jury in the hope of being awarded a Zorn Badge and a prestigious but also contested title: Riksspelman. Building on theories of ritual and performance in combination with Sara Ahmed’s theorisation of orientation, the thesis attends to sensory ways of experiencing and knowing music while tracing the various ways in which Swedish traditional music is performed, felt, heard, sensed and understood in audition spaces. It draws on interviews with players and jury members, participant observations of music auditions and the jury’s deliberations, showing how musical value is negotiated through processes of inclusion and exclusion of repertoires, instruments and performance practices. The study also illuminates how anxiety and uncertainties are felt on both sides of the adjudication table. The auditions trigger feelings of belonging and harmony, but also rupture and distance. A brimming of felt qualities contributes to the sensing of history, tradition, memory, place and geography, as well as close emotional connections between music and individual performers. The thesis reveals how gradual adaptation, and the lived experiences of time within tradition, allow the Zorn institution to negotiate change and thereby maintain its position within Swedish society.

Les récepteurs P2X, activés par l’ATP extracellulaire et cations non-sélectifs, sont impliqués dans de nombreux rôles physiopathologiques. Le manque de sélectivité de molécules pharmacologiques est un inconvénient majeur pour leur étude. La résolution de leurs structures cristallographiques a permis de les comprendre à l’échelle moléculaire, cependant les mécanismes impliqués dans les transitions allostériques restent mal compris. Au laboratoire, deux outils, dérivés d’azobenzène, permettant l’activation des récepteurs P2X en absence d’ATP et par la lumière ont été développés. L’utilisation de ces outils ont permis l’étude de la transition allostérique de l’état ouvert à l’état désensibilisé, mettant en avant une zone de régulation efficace dans les espaces transmembranaires. De plus, leur utilisation a permis l’investigation biophysique d’une mutation présente sur P2X2 humain, responsable d’une surdité non-syndromatique. Cette mutation entraine un rétrécissement du pore, impactant le passage de gros cations impliqués dans le processus d’audition. Enfin, la relation entre le diamètre du pore ionique et le passage de gros cations a été établi. / P2X receptors, activated by extracellular ATP and non-selective cations, are involved in many physiopathological roles. The lack of selectivity of pharmacological molecules is a major drawback for their study. The resolution of their crystallographic structures provided a molecular framework, but the mechanisms involved in allosteric transitions remain misunderstood. In the laboratory, two tools have been developed, derived from azobenzene, allowing the activation of P2X receptors in the absence of ATP and by light. The use of these tools allowed the study of the allosteric transition from the open to the desensitized state, highlighting an effective regulatory zone in transmembrane spaces. In addition, their use provided the biophysical investigation of a mutation present on hP2X2, responsible for non-syndromatic hearing loss. This mutation leads to a narrowing of the pore, affecting the large cations flow involved in hearing process. Finally, the relationship between the diameter of the ionic pore and the passage of large cations has been established.

Stand-up comedy has been a major influence on American culture and has given the "Everyman" the ability to laugh at ourselves. Stand-up comedians have been performing in nightclubs, bars, clubs, and, most importantly, theatres for the past 60 years. Stand-up comedy can take many forms: a monologue of entertaining incidents that form a story, or a string of one-liners, or a succession of jokes. This performance project and thesis is an examination and an attempt at the art form that we call stand-up comedy. It will answer the question of what is the best approach to writing comedy for an actor finishing his graduate acting program. It will also challenge the idea of simple joke-telling versus storytelling and examine the following question: Can anyone be a standup comedian? A research of the history, an analysis of the practitioners, and training from graduate studio work will support the discovery of a practical approach to writing and performing a stand-up comedy routine.

They hope to open a beachside bar and spend the rest of their days relaxing and watching girls. When Percy starts dating Melinda Bundt, however, Larry's jealousy threatens to destroy the men's friendship. When Percy needs money to follow Melinda to Atlanta, Larry must choose between supporting his best friend or pursuing their dream of Barbados alone. Escape Velocity examines the ways we hold ourselves back from pursuing our dreams, the reasons we justify doing so, and the changes in our life that finally inspire us to move toward our goals.
