Large artificial bodies have catastrophic potential in cases of collapse of their structures. As occurred in Mariana - MG, the collapse of the dam brought incalculable socioeconomic and environmental damages, which justifies the importance of accident prevention, as required by Law No. 12,334/2010, which deals with dam safety. An important point of verification of the health of the structure refers to the monitoring of the same that must be monitored periodically in order to detect displacements or deformations. This monitoring is carried out using geotechnical methods and geodetic methods, such as positioning by artificial satellites, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) or by distance and angle measuring equipment. in addition to precision geometric leveling and gravimetry Having as a case study a concrete dam of a hydroelectric plant, the dissertation aims to use the GNSS signals to detect the occurrence of displacement of points in the dam 's structural body during four campaigns of data collection between the years of 2012 and 2015. The Global Congruence Test (TCG) will be used to detect the vertices that can be considered stable. All GNSS data processing was performed using only the Global Positioning System (GPS) signals in the scientific software Bernese, v5.2. For the implementation of the TCG, the TCGunesp was implemented, a software capable of using the results from the Bernese data processing and informing if the geodesic stations have moved over time. The results of the GPS data processing showed a high precision of the coordinates that was confronted with the repeatability of the results of the processing sections, in which a difference in the stochastic model was verified, which enabled the calculation of a scale coefficient. Through the analysis of TCG 3D, 2D (planimetric) and 1D (altimetric and in the axis of the dam flow) using TCGunesp, stations were observed that were displaced when using the original stochastic model. When the stochastic model was rescheduled from the scale coefficient, the number of stations considered stable by the test was significantly increased.

Research into adventitious lung sound signals originating from pulmonary tuberculosis using electronic auscultation

Becker, Konrad Wilhelm 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / Pulmonary tuberculosis is a common and potentially deadly infectious disease, commonly affecting the respiratory area. Over one-third of the world’s population is infected with the tuberculosis bacterium. Since pulmonary tuberculosis damages the respiratory area, the sound properties of infected lungs differ from those of non-infected lungs. However, auscultation is often ruled out as a reliable diagnostic technique due to the random position and severity of damage to the lungs as well as requiring the personal and trained judgment of an experienced medical practitioner. This project investigates a possible improvement in the pulmonary diagnostic and treatment field by applying electronic and computer-aided sound analysis techniques to analyze respiratory actions beyond human audible judgment. Respiratory sounds of both healthy subjects and subjects who were infected with pulmonary tuberculosis were recorded from seven locations per lung on both the posterior and anterior chest walls, using self-designed hardware. Adaptive filtering signal and analysis techniques yielded a wide range of signal features. This included analysis for time, frequency and both wheeze and crackle adventitious respiratory sounds. Following the analysis, statistical methods identified the most attractive signal measurements capable of separating the recordings of healthy and unhealthy respiratory sounds. Selected signal features were used with neural network optimization to obtain a successful implementation for the semi-automated identification of healthy and unhealthy respiratory sounds originating from pulmonary tuberculosis, with a performance of over 80% for sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. The success of categorizing the recordings justifies the capabilities of the digital analysis of respiratory sounds and supports an argument for further research and refinement into the assessment of pulmonary tuberculosis by electronic auscultation. Further research is recommended, with improvements justified and highlighted in this report.

Machado, William Gladstone de Freitas 03 December 2007 (has links)
This dissertation is a contribution, through a bibliographical research, on the subject of instrumentation and monitoring in enterprises of tailings dams. This research presents the basic objectives of the instrumentation of dams, their technical characteristics, the construction methodology of tailings dams and their monitoring through auscultation of the instrumentation. Due to the variety of instruments that can be installed in a dam, this work was limited to the analysis of two segments, instruments of measurement displacements and those for controlling percolation flow, which are the most commonly used in earth and tailings dams. This study is justified due to recent accidents occurring in tailings dams, which stress the importance and the permanent necessity of the improvement in security and monitoring conditions of Brazilian dams. These accidents cause social, economic and environmental damages to the enterprise. As a result of this research it can be concluded that it contributed with up-to-date knowledge to the national technical dam sector.

Cardiac patterns during another infant's cry sound in neonates of depressed mothers

Unknown Date (has links)
Past research indicates there is a link between physiological responses and adaptive social responses to another individual's distress. Scholars have theorized that humans may be predisposed, both physiologically and behaviorally to responding to others, especially those who are in distress. Maternal depression has been associated with dysregulated emotional development and may possibly affect the physiological and behavioral responses of a neonate. The present research examined the relationship between neonates' physiological and behavioral responses to naturally generated (compared to artificial) stimuli of other neonates, as well as the role of maternal depression in the responses. Specifically, heart rate, heart period, and heart period variability were measured to assess the newborns' reaction to cries generated by both other newborns and digitally modulated sources. This study found that newborns of depressed mothers had higher heart period variability and showed less behavioral distress when hearing the cry of another infant. / by Joseph Cotler. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

AVA : Augmented Auscultation Simulation

Hess, Manuel January 2020 (has links)
This thesis was a collaboration with Laerdal medical, exploring how the learning experience for auscultation training in medical, nursing and paramedic schools can be improved. The motivation to do so results from the assumption that there were great opportunities from a user experience perspective and my own wish to explore virtual simulation techniques with digital media, which seemed to be a good match. The topic sounds quite specific to a lay person, but allows to understand its core functions in a relatively short amount of time, making it a suitable for thesis work that required me to empathize with users and understand their needs. Being a user centric project, leading to a design process that is oriented around their needs and ability to provide feedback and insights. Therefore I designed my own workshops and improvised with prototyping, which provided me the feedback I needed in order to create a solution that considered the users’ practical needs and improved the usability of the product. Considering all the findings from the research, I concluded that there are design opportunities especially in the simulation training for auscultation. Simulation training offers a great foundation to embed blended learning methods into the learners’ routines. That in mind I could formulate some central “how might we” questions, adressing some of the major pain points found during the research. As a result, I created a solution that complements the students’ learning agenda in a sensible way, while reducing the cost of equipment and increasing the flexibility of training. It is possible to be operated individually, independent of location and allowing repetitive training throughout the entire semester to form habits and practice routines continuously. Feedback adapts to the users needs and can be adjusted to their personal preference.
