It attempts to observe the importance of the profile of this type of character as regards the traces of autobiography and the essayistic tone which mark the stories of these two writers. In order to do that, it discusses the possible relation between their Poetics and «autofiction» (a device directly linked to the role played by the characters who represent the figure of the author), and what the contours of the critical portrait of the literary field developed within their fictions are. The main objective is to observe the literary postures of these characters, in other words, how they deal with the writing activity and with the activity of reading as well, and what they think and say about literature / Mestrado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Mestra em Teoria e História Literária

No. of bitstreams: 1 Zouvi_AlinedeAlvarenga_M.pdf: 20010510 bytes, checksum: 7961a9cb7fab81dcec6c56a743811134 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015 / Resumo: Este trabalho tem como objetivo a análise da obra autobiográfica da cartunista estadunidense Alison Bechdel publicada no formato livro, composta, até o momento, por duas histórias em quadrinhos: Fun Home ¿ A Family Tragicomic (2006) e Are you my mother? ¿ A Comic Drama (2012). The aim of this work is the analysis of the autobiographical work of American cartoonist Alison Bechdel, published in book form, composed, so far, of two comics: Fun Home ¿ A Family Tragicomic (2006) and Are you my mother? ¿ A Comic Drama (2012). Apart from the study of autobiographical works in comics and the implications of this specific media and genre combination, we aim to observe how Bechdel structures her narratives through intertextuality with other productions, such as literary, psychoanalytic, or imagery. Our attention will be focused on the use that Bechdel makes of such works and what is the connection between the building of parallels with the author's autobiographical production in which she articulates the works and biographies (of the characters related to her history and life experience) at various levels, as well as the way the author critically thinks, while constructing her autobiographies, of the act of autobiography itself / Mestrado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Mestra em Teoria e História Literária

Outobiografie en identiteit : ’n vergelykende beskouing van ’n Wonderlike geweld (2005) van Elsa Joubert en ’n Ander tongval (2005) van Antjie Krog

Hauman, Suzaan 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Autobiography is a growing, but elusive literary genre. However, when texts are read as autobiographical – and thus as a form of self-representation – the theme of identity provides the reader with an interesting and useful method by which to approach it. In this study, two Afrikaans autobiographical texts are approached in a comparative manner, with the aim being to examine the writers’ representations of themselves. The texts studied are ’n Wonderlike geweld (2005) by Elsa Joubert, and ’n Ander tongval (2005) by Antjie Krog. Besides the autobiographical nature of these texts, the comparison is also based on: the writers’ status in the Afrikaans literary system, similarities beween them and their backgrounds, and the corresponding publication dates. The theoretical basis from where the concepts autobiography and identity are viewed is explained briefly. The emphasis falls on autobiography as a hybrid genre, that is defined mainly by how it is read. The use of identity as a reading strategy is suggested, with identity being understood as an unstable construction that changes constantly, depending on the context in which it is constructed. Consequently, the different identities according to which Joubert and Krog reveal themselves to the reader and the autobiographical forms through which they achieve this, are examined and discussed in separate chapters. Specific emphasis is placed on how they convey the spirit of the time and on the influence of the context in which the texts are published. Finally, the differences and similarities in the writers’ representation of themselves are summarised. In the end it emerges that the reading strategy focused on identity provides the reader with a useful approach to the study of texts in the autobiographical genre, since it is possible to successfully apply it to two texts with diverse autobiographical qualities. Furthermore, it becomes clear that the structure and style of these texts mirror the writer’s approach to identity to a great extent.
