Java-based Human-Machine Interface Development of Automation System

Graphic-Monitor software on market always emphasizes a friendly User-Interface, many types of controllers or devices support, convenient Network-Communication and to communicate with related Database. Nevertheless, I/O control interface cards are not supported by the Graphic-Monitor software. Only Programmable Logic Controllers and Distributed Input/Output modules are supported. In addition, although it provides many basic functions to set devices¡¦ action process, it doesn¡¦t allow user to write complex motion control program. This limits the flexibility of motion control. The solution in the academia is to use various kinds of programming language like C++ Builder or LabVIEW as the development tools. And then, depends on the demand of the hardware to develop Human Machine Interfaces of production devices. Although these programming languages are very powerful, they are too expensive and platform-dependent. In this thesis, a platform independent and cost-free programming language, Java, is adopted to develop a human-machine-interface of an automatic production system integrated with various kinds of I/O control cards. This HMI has the following features: -- Consists of data monitoring, motion control, image inspection, and network communication modules; -- Can run under any operation system; -- Cost-effective. Two integrated examples are implemented with this HMI in the lab. One is ¡¥Production system remote control¡¦ that combines the motion control and network communication modules; another is ¡¥Vision introduce search and positioning system¡¦, in which the motion control and image inspection modules are used.

Design Automation System-Supporting Documentation and Management

During the practical use of Design Automation (DA) System in a company, the lack of assistance from either documentation work about the whole system or management of knowledge could bring out some obstacles when engineers reuse existing knowledge and information. The purpose of this project is to explore an approach of documentation and knowledge management in DA System. The study is mainly based on the actual case of seat heater DA system developed by JTH. Based on preset functional requirement for the potential solution, several principles and methods of documentation and knowledge management are introduced such as MOKA, CommonKADS, SysML and PVM. A number of useful applications such as DRed (Design Rationale Editor), PC PACK, Sementic MediaWiki and Product Model Manager became candidates solutions for this project. The selection of final approach was Sementic MediaWiki, and this is based on the comparison of the result from evaluation of functionality of each application. Due to specificity of documentation on the DA system, the “process based” approa­ch­ had been used for structuring system included knowledge instead of using a systematical method like either MOKA or CommonKADS completely. Setting up interconnection between different knowledge objects was one of the most important tasks in this project because it enables capturing and retrieving of knowledge. Sementic MediaWiki, a powerful text representative and web-based tool has been used as a platform of representing the whole knowledge and information. With its implementation, the performance of Sementic MediaWiki had been tested accor­ding to the preset functional requirement. After a slight refine process to the solution, the satisfactory result had been achieved, and also proved the applicability of Sementic Wiki in such kind of project.

DEVELOPMENT OF AN AUTOMATION AND CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A COAL SPIRAL

Coal spirals are widely used in coal preparation plants around the world to clean fine coal, typically in the 1 x 0.15 mm size range. Despite their popularity and the trend toward increased automation in modern coal preparation plants, adjustments to the critical process variable for coal spirals, i.e., product splitter position, continue to be done manually. Since spiral feed in a plant tends to fluctuate on a regular basis, timely manual adjustment of splitter position in tens or hundreds of spirals operating in a plant is nearly impossible. As a result, the clean coal yield from a spiral and also the overall plant suffers on a regular basis. The main goal of this study was to develop a suitable sensor and control system to adjust the product splitter position of a full-scale spiral. Some of the basic properties of coal slurry were thoroughly investigated for their on-line measurability and for their correlations with the density of the constituent solid particles. After experimenting with electrical capacitance- and conductivity- (i.e., reciprocal of resistivity) based sensing techniques, a conductivity-based tube sensor was developed for measuring density of solid particles in the spiral trough. Two sensors were used to establish a density gradient in the critical region across the spiral trough at the discharge end. Based on this continuously monitored density gradient, a PIC24 microcontroller was programmed to send a signal to a DC gear motor that would move the splitter arm in the appropriate direction when sufficient variation in conductivity was detected. Currently, a cycle time of 5 minutes is used for the spiral control system; however, in a commercial application, the cycle time could be lengthened to 30 or 60 minutes. The automation system has been validated by examining the performance of a full-scale spiral while deliberately changing factors like feed solid content, feed washability characteristics, and feed slurry ionic concentration. With a full-scale compound spiral programmed to achieve a specific gravity of separation at 1.65 by an automatic adjustment of the splitter position, the actual D50 values achieved for two separate tests were 1.64 and 1.73. The close proximity of target and actual D50 values is indicative of the effectiveness of the developed system. The next step in near-term commercialization of this proprietary spiral control system will be a longer term (several months) in-plant demonstration. Performance analysis of IEC 61850 process bus and interoperability test among multi-vendor system

IEC 61850 standards are the global standard for communication in substations. It is gaining popularity in power substation automation and will dominate the future substation automation and protection system design. The standards provide new approaches for protection, control and metering function via communication. The secondary circuits in substation are simplified significantly and the massive hardwired cables are replaced by the high-speed process bus which transmit analogue and binary signals with Ethernet messages. However, the conformity of a device with the standards does not necessarily guarantee the interoperability with devices from different manufacturers. The use of devices compatible with IEC 61850 standards presents a challenge to many system integrators, especially due to lack of familiarity with features such as Generic Object Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE), reporting, Sampled Values and the need for system redundancy. To facilitate a smooth implementation, all the features and the data exchanges between devices need to be tested to ensure the system operates correctly. This project was carried out to study the protection performance of secondary schemes with IEC 61850 process bus architecture in substation. The tests were performed including current differential protection and distance protection on a transmission substation of the type used in the UK on the transmission network. The protection schemes were tested under IEC 61850 environment with multi-vendor IEDs like Alstom MiCOM IEDs, NARI IEDs with the OMICRON test set. More tests were carried out to verify the interoperability and the performance of time-critical messages were evaluated under different network architectures. The impact of the background traffic on these two messages was investigated and the response of the IEDs when the Sampled Values packets were lost or overwritten was recorded and provided to utility as a reference. This project also presented a technique to assess the performance of Merging Units from different manufacturers, when operating with Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) performing a distance protection function. The performance of the process bus with parallel redundancy protocol is evaluated using a closed loop approach involving a Real Time Digital Simulator. The results indicate that protection using process bus communication is feasible, and meets grid code requirements when implemented with commercially available products. It was found that process bus operation is robust, even with network traffic conditions far beyond what would be experienced in an active substation.

A BIM-based Interoperability Platform in Support of Building Operation and Energy Management

Building energy efficiency is progressively becoming a crucial topic in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector. Energy management tools have been developed to promise appropriate energy savings. Building energy simulation (BES) is a tool mainly used to analyze and compare the energy consumption of various design/operation scenarios, while building automation systems (BAS) works as another energy management tool to monitor, measure and collect operational data, all in an effort to optimize energy consumption. By integrating the energy simulated data and actual operational data, the accuracy of a building energy model can be increased while the calibrated energy model can be applied as a benchmark for guiding the operational strategies. This research predicted that building information modeling (BIM) would link BES and BAS by acting as a visual model and a database throughout the lifecycle of a building. The intent of the research was to use BIM to document energy-related information and to allow its exchange between BES and BAS. Thus, the energy-related data exchange process would be simplified, and the productive efficiency of facility management processes would increase. A systematic literature review has been conducted in investigating the most popular used data formats and data exchange methods for the integration of BIM/BES and BAS, the results showed the industry foundation classes (IFC) was the most common choice for BIM tools mainly and database is a key solution for managing huge actual operational datasets, which was a reference for the next step in research. Then a BIM-based framework was proposed to supporting the data exchange process among BIM/BES/BAS. 4 modules including BIM Module, Operational Data Module, Energy Simulation Module and Analysis and Visualization Module with an interface were designed in the framework to document energy-related information and to allow its exchange between BES and BAS. A prototype of the framework was developed as a platform and a case study of an entire office suite was conducted using the platform to validate this framework. The results showed that the proposed framework enables automated or semi-automated multiple-model development and data analytics processes. These instances include the selection of both new and retrofit designs and for building codes, building commissioning, and real-time optimal control, among others. The main challenge surrounding BES is the discrepancy between quantitative results and actual performance data. Building automation systems (BAS), or a part of BAS which is often referred to as building energy management systems (BEMS), works as another energy management tool to monitor, measure and collect operational data, all in an effort to optimize energy consumption. The key disadvantage to the more general tool of BAS in energy management is that the data sets collected by BAS are typically too large to be analyzed effectively. One potential solution to the lack of effective energy management analysis may lie in the integration of BES and BAS. Actual operational data can be compared with simulation results in assessing the accuracy of an energy model while the energy model can be applied as a benchmark for evaluating the actual energy consumption and optimizing control strategies. An Empirical Investigation of Information Systems Success in Terms of Net Benefits: A Study on the Success of Implementing a Building Automation System

When measuring Information Systems (IS) success, it is important to know the type of IS being measured, the systems objectives, and the unit of analysis. As organizations invest in technology to help achieve strategic goals, they need to be able to measure IS success. Measuring the effectiveness of IS from an organizational perspective is the effect it has on achieving organizational goals. The effectiveness of information systems is a measure of net benefits. This empirical study investigated IS success in terms of the DeLone and McLean IS success model variable, net benefits. In order to measure IS success, the context of the investigation and the unit of analysis are as important as what is being measured. This investigation, in the context of a building automation system (BAS), evaluated the net benefits success measurement with the organization as the unit of analysis. Two hypothesis testing studies were conducted. The first study was a predictive investigation, which researched the relationship among the independent variables, kilowatt hours, kilowatt demand, and the dependent variable, the cost of energy. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to understand to what extent the independent variables could predict the dependent variable. The second study was a correlational investigation. This study was conducted to ascertain whether a building automation system affects the cost of energy. A Point Biserial Correlation Coefficient test was conducted to understand the relationship between the cost of energy and stores with a building automation system and those without. A t-test was conducted to understand the level of significance. The results of the analysis showed that the relationship between the cost of energy and a BAS is statistically significant and that the variables kilowatt hours and kilowatt demand are statistically significant as predictors of the cost of energy.

Automation of a Thread Rolling Machine for use in a Flexible Workcell

This work follows the design, prototyping and implementation of an automatic part loading and unloading system for use in thread rolling of aerospace fasteners. The thread rolling automation system is designed to function as part of a multi-process workcell, which emphasizes adaptability and ease of implementation. Design of the thread rolling automation facilitates the development of a universal gripping system, which is designed to grasp a large variety of fastener styles and sizes with a minimum of tooling changeover. A novel grasping model is developed to predict the error tolerance of the proposed gripping system design, which is validated experimentally. The proposed gripper and automation system are prototyped and tested, and shown to perform reliably with a wide range of fastener types.

This thesis proposes an algorithm and develops a program for fault detection and system restoration in medium voltage distribution systems. In Turkey, TUBITAK-UZAY developed distribution automation system including fault detection and service restoration functions for Bogazici Electricity Distribution Company. By the time, expanding of distribution system with nonstandardized infrastructure (for example more than one circuit breaker in the feeder, mesh and closed loop feeder structure), developed automation system have not properly worked under these unplanned situations. Taking into consideration of previously utilized TUBITAK Distribution Automation System (TUDOSIS), fault isolation algorithm is improved to cope with practical problems as non-standardized infrastructure and selectivity issue in protection system, and the proposed isolation algorithm is simulated. Further system restoration solution for mesh distribution systems is analyzed for distribution system in Turkey and expert system based algorithm is proposed.
