Black generation Y students' environmental concerns, attitudes towards green advertising and environmental behaviour / Costa Synodinos

Green marketing is, in a sense, an oxymoron in that it merges the seemingly contradictory concepts of marketing, which focuses on facilitating and encouraging consumption, and environmental concern, which focuses on environmental conservation. Green advertising represents an important marketing tool for communicating an organisation’s green image and is the driving force behind fostering environmental awareness and environmentally friendly behaviour. As with any type of advertising, an important determinant of the success of green advertising is consumers‟ attitudes towards green advertising and corresponding environmental concerns and behaviour. The last decade has shown a staggering number of marketers targeting the green segment of the population with green advertising, with increasing green advertisements manufacturers are informing their customers about the pro-environmental characteristics of their products and services. Green advertising is an essential tool in an organisation’s overall environmental marketing strategy; one which possibly leads to achieving superior performance and assists in creating a sustainable competitive edge. An in-depth understanding of the relevant consumer behavioural aspects of a target market is tantamount to formulating successful marketing strategies. This holds true with the formulating of green marketing advertising strategies, which aim at encouraging consumption in an environmentally sustainable manner. There is a dearth of published literature on the South African Generation Y‟s consumer behaviour in general and none that specifically focuses on the environmental concern, attitudes towards green advertising and environmental behaviour of the significantly sized black Generation Y cohort. The Generation Y cohort is defined as individuals born between 1986 and 2005. In terms of South Africa, Generation Y individuals accounted for 40 percent of the South African population, with black Generation Y individuals making up 84 percent of this generational cohort. In addition, the black Generation Y cohort of South Africa makes up approximately 33 percent of the whole population, resulting in a highly attractive market segment. Individuals attaining tertiary qualifications are of particular interest to marketers since they are likely to enjoy higher earnings and a higher social status, which together is likely to make them opinion leaders amongst their peers. The primary objective of this study was to investigate black Generation Y students‟ environmental concern, attitudes towards green advertising and environmental behaviour within the South African context. The target population of the study was defined as full-time black Generation Y students, aged between 18-24 years, enrolled at South African registered public higher education institutions (HEIs). The sampling frame comprised the 23 registered South African public HEIs. Using a judgement sampling method, this was narrowed down to four HEIs located in the Gauteng Province - two of which are country-based and two of which are city-based. For this study, a convenience sample of 400 full-time black Generation Y students who were enrolled at these four South African HEIs during 2012 was drawn. The relevant primary data was obtained using a self-administered questionnaire. Lecturers at each of the four HEIs were contacted and requested to distribute the questionnaire to their students either during class or after class. The self-administered questionnaire was hand delivered to these lecturers. The questionnaire requested respondents to indicate on a five-point Likert scale the extent of their agreement/disagreement with items designed to measure their environmental concerns, their attitudes towards green advertising as well as their current environmental behaviour patterns. In addition, the students were asked to provide certain demographic data. The findings of this study indicate that South African black Generation Y students are environmentally concerned, have a positive attitude towards green advertising and report behaving in a pro-environmental manner. Previous research found gender to be a significant factor in displaying concerns for the environment. However, this study determined that gender played no significant role towards the black South African Generation Y cohort environmental concerns and attitudes. Similarly, the study found no significant difference between black Generation Y students who were based at city HEIs and black Generation Y students who were based at countryside HEIs. Vaal Triangle independent retailers' perceived awareness versus actual knowledge of the Consumer Protection Act / P.J. van Schalkwyk

Over the past two decades, South Africa has introduced several laws regulating business and providing protection to consumers. These include the Competition Act (89 of 1998), the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (25 of 2002), the National Credit Act (34 of 2005), and the Consumer Protection Act (68 of 2008) (CPA). The CPA was implemented to conform to international best practice regarding consumer law, to replace the existing but outdated laws, and most importantly, to provide protection to vulnerable consumers (Department of Trade and Industry, 2004:14; Rampersad & Reddy, 2012:7407). The importance of protecting vulnerable consumers can be attributed to South Africa’s history of discrimination and excluding the majority of the population from quality education and equal opportunities in the marketplace (Rampersad & Reddy, 2012:7407). However, the CPA is of small value to consumers if it is not generally known and applied; thus, consumers will continue to be at the mercy of retailers who very often do not have their best interests at heart. Therefore, this study was undertaken to measure the awareness and knowledge of the CPA among retailers. The research was done among small independent retailers located in shopping malls in the Vaal Triangle, South Africa. The study followed a quantitative approach, using a self-administered questionnaire to obtain a single cross-sectional sample. From the data gathered, it is clear that most of the participants considered themselves well informed regarding consumer rights; 88 present of the participants indicated that they are familiar with the nine consumer rights contained in the CPA. However, this stands in stark contrast to the results obtained in the section measuring the actual knowledge of the CPA; only 49 present of the participants managed to answer more than half of the questions correctly, and none answered more than 70 present correctly. In addition, the participants seemed to score higher on those rights that existed before the CPA came into effect, and lower on the new rights introduced by the Act. This seems to indicate that retailers are not yet familiar with the Act; it is, therefore, unlikely that they do business in a manner that complies with the CPA, which robs consumers of the benefit and protection of the Act. Of the retailers who participated in this study, 72 present said they believe the CPA is necessary to protect consumers. This would seem to indicate that it is the lack of knowledge rather that real resistance to the Act which is standing in the way of wider compliance. Acceptance of a Remote Desktop Access System to Increase Workspace Awareness

Awareness systems are being designed and implemented to improve employee connections. This study examines the variables that affect the acceptance of an awareness system. The awareness system that was used for this research was a remote desktop access system. The independent variables investigated were the degree of detail that can be viewed on a desktop, whether the users can control who can access their desktops, whether the users can control when others have access to their desktops, the equality of access to others' desktops, and task-technology fit. In determining the effect of the independent variables on acceptance, the dependent variable, the mediating variables of privacy and fairness were taken into account. There was a preliminary survey conducted to determine appropriate situations to be used in the scenario descriptions for the survey for the main study. The methodology of policy-capturing surveys was utilized to conduct the survey for the main study in order to investigate the model developed in this study. The policy-capturing survey was pre-tested on University of Waterloo students. The main study was conducted in two different organizations, the subjects for the first study were employees from the Information Systems and Technology Department at the University of Waterloo and the subjects for the second study were employees from Ciber Incorporated. Results indicate that perceptions of privacy and perceptions of fairness have significant effects on acceptance. Also, perceptions of privacy and fairness are related to details in the design of the remote desktop access system. This research may be a contribution to this field since little research has been conducted in this area and implications can be drawn for future research on acceptance of awareness systems.

Each year the number of flights around the world increases, and to be able to counter the increase of traffic the air traffic control (ATC) and the systems they use to control the traffic must be developed in the same pace. This is something that bigger ATCC’s around the world has gone through and experienced. To be able to maintain or increase the level of safety at the same time as the traffic load increases, you need to do more than just hire more air traffic controllers. The systems in use must always be developed in accordance to new regulations and as well become more effective. This leads to ATCC’s continuously going through changes in the form of implementations of new ATC systems. The research and development are moving forward in an immense speed, and the latest decade’s ATC in many places has gone from writing down information on paper strips to the more modern strip less systems. This has resulted in a remarkable increase of effectivity and safety in ATC. In Sweden, there are three bigger ATCC’s: Stockholm ATCC, Malmö ATCC and ÖKC. In both Stockholm and Malmö, the strip less systems are already in use while ÖKC uses a less developed ATC system. It is economically demanding to continuously keep the ATCC’s up to date with the most modern systems, and the controlling factor is demand. In a working environment where safety is of the highest concern, you need a carefully prepared method of both updating, implementing, and testing new systems, providing personnel with training and sequentially implementing it. To achieve this, you need to do thoroughly review the concerned ATCC before, during and after an implementation. With the help of interviews, surveys and literature studies the working methods and processes have been examined and analyzed on ÖKC. By gathering opinions from the personnel at ÖKC, a good understanding of ÖKC has been attained. The unique thing about ÖKC’s air traffic, compared to the other ATCC’s, is that a big portion of their air traffic is military flights, which leads to different traffic situations. This study has been conducted as a first step before an implementation, with the intention of analyzing how a strip less system affects ÖKC with its current working methods and processes, and the connection to situational awareness. The study intends to be used as a foundation to future inquiries of how ÖKC will be affected by an implementation of this kind. It also contains opinions from operative personnel at ÖKC, and how they feel about a change of an ATC system.

As of September 11, 2001, combat in today's world is much more challenging and requires a better understanding of the enemy and his support infrastructure. There is a renewed interest in human intelligence (HUMINT) as expressed by the US Department of Defense and Intelligence Agencies. But HUMINT is only data collected by human sources about an individual or group of individuals and their activities. Cultural Immersion is a step above mere data collectionâ µit allows its practitioners to understand the thought processes and/or the routines of questionable individuals or groups. Cultural immersion is a skill set that allows missions to develop and execute with smooth transitions. It does not guarantee mission success but certainly assures greater mission success than can be achieved operating without it. Cultural immersion "equalizes the playing field" when US/Coalition forces are operating in foreign lands against otherwise invisible or immersed enemies. This thesis examines various aspects of cultural immersion, how they relate to warfare, and proposes recommendations for cultural immersion supporting present day Naval Special Warfare (NSW) missions. The intent is to provide decision makers a viable option for actionable intelligence during the Global War on Terrorism.

The effects of fatigue on position determination and cognitive workload using a visual and 3-dimensional auditory display

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This study compares the effects of a visual and a 3-dimensional auditory display on primary and secondary task performance, mood, and mental workload at incremental levels of sleep deprivation. It is based on a study conducted by the Army Research Laboratory, Cognitive Science Branch, Aberdeen, Maryland, from 12 Marines performing land navigational tasks in two helmet-mounted display (HMD) modes; visual and 3-dimensional auditory, for a 48 hour period. The results indicate that performance under sleep deprivation is significantly impacted in both modalities; however, performance in the primary task was more degraded in the 3-D auditory modality. Additionally, Marines were more likely to experience degraded performance in the secondary task with increased sleep deprivation. The recommendations address the need to design HMDs that will not overburden sensory channels and the concern for military leaders to understand the additional demands imposed on solders in a HMD environment. / Captain, Signal Corps, United States Army

Validating a method for enhanced communications and situational awareness at the incident command level

CHDS State/Local / The availability and interoperability of communications at an incident scene have long been recognized as high-priority problems that need to be addressed to improve our nation's Homeland Security and preparedness. This thesis describes a proposed methodology to address these issues at the Incident Command level while enhancing situational awareness and information sharing. The thesis analyzes the results of a research project funded by the Department of Homeland Security at the University of Louisville's IT Research Center for Homeland Security. The problem being addressed is that the decision-maker with the boots on the ground, the Incident Commander, needs relevant information in the early stages of the emergency at the incident scene and an efficient way to communicate with other resources. The research project fielded a prototype solution based on readily available commercial off-the-shelf components integrated in a man-portable configuration to provide maximum flexibility, lower costs, and ease of operations. The United States has experienced a significant amount of difficulty of late with two factors: a) how to fight against a networked enemy, and b) the need for more cultural intelligence. This thesis will describe a structure to assist with both those needs. The premise is that an expanded and improved network of US Military Groups is the weapon of choice for the war on terror, and beyond. The purpose of this thesis is to propose a policy that will consolidate the functions of Defense AttachsÌ , Security Assistance Officers, and a proposed corps of ethnographic information officers into a network of embassy annexes that will cover every nation in which the United States has a country team. The intertwined questions of how to fight a network and how to gather cultural intelligence present the United States with a strategic challenge, and require the examination of the type of information the Department of Defense captures, and what is to be done with that information. This thesis proposes a means to collect ethnographic information and a structure for using it to make effective decisions in a variety of traditional security roles as well as in the fight against transnational terror networks.

360 degree port MDA - a strategy to improve port security

Effective public and private sector collaboration is needed in a world with myriad security challenges and fierce global competition. Although steps have been taken in the years since 9/11 to realize these twin goals, much more needs to be done. The current maritime domain awareness (MDA) paradigm needs to be expanded to provide comprehensive awareness of intermodal operations in our ports. An effective Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) program that succeeds in leveraging intermodal data is fundamental to better port-level MDA. Developing effective port level MDA and using it to enhance the security of our ports relies on the effective organization of public and private sector resources. Metrics of METOC forecast performance and operational impacts on carrier strike operations

We have developed metrics of the performance and operational impacts of METOC support to strike operations conducted on operational aircraft carriers (CVs). Our goal was to assess that support and make recommendations on improving it. We adapted an existing automated real time METOC metrics system, which was developed for land based training missions, for use on CVs by developing a new data collection form, new metrics, and new collection, analysis, and reporting architecture for the remote entering of sensitive mission data without compromise. The weather support element of a CV, the OA division, does not provide strike mission planning support, but does provide situational awareness to pilots. Our system allows that situational awareness to be measured and assessed using metrics that quantify the performance of the forecasts, the relationship of the forecasts to the mitigating actions taken by pilots due to adverse weather conditions, and the effects of individual weather phenomena on the execution of strike missions. A key element of the data collection, analysis, and reporting system developed in this study is the collection of METOC related data from pilots during their intelligence debriefings. This system is readily adaptable for the assessment of METOC support to other warfare areas.
