Nunes, Radamés Vieira 29 August 2016 (has links)
At the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century many Brazilian cities have experienced changes in several aspects, such as urbanization, accelerating the experience over time due to new possibilities of transport and communication, scientific discoveries, development of new techniques, such as steam, photography, telegraph , electricity, population growth, new habits, customs and norms of everyday practices, rationalization of politics, increasing impersonality in social relations, among other elements that altered the perception of the city. This study aims to reflect on ways of experiencing the modernization, this is the bottom question that permeates all the work, accompanied by the newspaper Norte de Goyaz and significant character Francisco Ayres da Silva. Attempts up from its trajectory and periodical produced by him realize what is the place of Porto Nacional against the modernization project and the results arising therefrom. In other words, the announcement of the new and the progress of the avalanche caused in the city located within the interior of the central part of Brazil. Francisco Ayres began to draw attention, not so much for its prominence as a public figure of / in Porto Nacional, but mainly for the way formed, moved, took part read, understood, interpreted and interfered in this process of modernization, which might not even have exploded in Porto city as desired, but there left many splinters, reaching its inhabitants. From this perspective, (re)tell the trajectory of Ayres, was the path taken to make more intelligible the way a city, which was constituted as northern goiano, supposedly alien to large centers region and modernization of urban space, went through this process in the electricity century, at which time it was believed, or wanted to believe it was not impossible for man. The days of Francisco Ayres did not have them in the palm of the hand, but the fragments of these days are printed in weekly papers, produced in Nortense typography in the early twentieth century, in them are given to read their ways of feeling, thinking and experiencing the context in who lived and his “utopian” projects for the city, which also remitted to that envisioned for the region, as expected splendid future. / Tese (Doutorado)

The social thought of Clarence Edwin Ayres

Gregory, Henry M. 01 January 1977 (has links)
It is the thesis of this study, that although Ayres’s theory of progress is damaging to his sociological theory as a whole, his theory of the basic dichotomy of social action, that of technology and ceremonialism, deserves greater credit than it has received and is profoundly significant sociologically.

The Instrumental Theories of John Dewey and Clarence Ayres

Ellis, Barbara Bridges 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this analysis is to explain the instrumental theories of Dewey and Ayres; their analysis of societal problems and the proposed solutions; and finally their perception of the future direction of society. Dewey and Ayres both utilized the instrumental theory of value to analyze problems and propose solutions. According to this theory, something has value if it enhances or furthers the life process of mankind. Therefore, this should become the criterion to be utilized in determining the future courses of action. They both agree that policy decisions should be made with at least one goal in mind: progress.

Leslie F. Ayres, an accomplished architect and architectural renderer

Gerhart, Andrea L. January 2001 (has links)
Leslie F. Ayres was an accomplished architect and architectural illustrator. His appreciation for and keen sense of art is apparent in his meticulous and poetic architectural illustrations. Mastering the skill of architectural drawing established Ayres as a designer, but he wasalso a builder. A successful architect, like Ayres, is both an artist and a builder, having the capability to guide a concept from design to construction. Leslie Ayres understood and valued this critical link needed to establish himself as a professional architect. He had a significant influence on the modern movement of architecture in Indiana, and a pioneering role of integrating gardens into his overall architectural designs. His designs utilized the functionalism of the modern movement, uniting the latest in building technologies: steel, concrete, and glass. However in contrast to many modernists, his designs would often reflect architecture based on precedents, incorporating Classical and traditional elements. Moreover, Ayres had a holistic approach to architecture that distinguished him from other modernist architects, in which every detail including light fixtures, interior finishes, and the surrounding landscape, related to the whole design idea. / Department of Architecture
