East-West Asymmetry in Coastal Temperatures of Hudson Bay as a Proxy for Sea Ice

The seasonal asymmetry in coastal temperatures on Hudson Bay was explored and evaluated as a proxy to hindcast sea ice conditions prior to 1972. Various indices of air temperature difference (∆T) between Churchill, MB and Inukjuak, QC were tested for linear correlations with spatially averaged sea ice concentration (SIC) and ice-free season length (IFS). A multiple regression equation employing a 31-day average of peak ∆T and a 61-day average of temperature during freeze-up reproduced the IFS record with an average error of 8.1 days. This equation was employed to extend the IFS record by 28 years. The resulting 68-year time series revealed a significant increasing trend most pronounced from 1985 to 2011. Hindcast data helped eliminate low-frequency climate oscillations of periodicity <68 years as a source of this trend, lending further evidence to the growing consensus of a declining sea ice being the result of anthropogenic climate forcing.

The Role of the Tyrrell Sea Aquitard and Bioherms in the Hydrogeology of the James Bay Lowlands Under Dewatering Conditions

The Hudson-James Bay Lowlands (HJBL) are composed of fens and bogs frequently intersected by rivers and punctured by bioherms (ancient reef mounds) rising from bedrock aquifer. The peatlands exist partly due to minimal vertical losses limited by the low hydraulic conductivity (K) of the Tyrrell Sea sediments and small vertical gradients between the surface and bedrock aquifers. The recent development of an open-pit mine; DeBeers Victor Diamond Mine within the HJBL requires dewatering of the regional limestone aquifer to a depth of 200 mbgs. Two major components in assessing the potential impacts of dewatering on the hydrogeological regime and the sensitive peatland ecosystem are: the characteristics and behaviour of the Tyrrell Sea aquitard, and bioherms as potential recharge enhancing features. The Victor Tyrrell Sea (VTS) deposits are clayey silt with low LL, low PI, and no smectite clay minerals. The clay fraction consists of quartz, illite, chlinochlore, and usually calcite. The deposits are normally consolidated with Cc values of 0.08-0.155 and void ratios of 0.52-0.77. The VTS deposits are grey with pockets of black graphite and frequent shells. The K rages from 6.6x10-9 to 4.7x10-8 m/s. GEO-SLOPE™ finite element modeling software was used to investigate the sensitivity of surface drainage and consolidation behaviour in regard to the range of measured VTS parameters. The behaviours were also compared to classic clay aquitard types such as Lake Agassiz and Lake Champlain. Unit thickness, K, and the K modifier function have the greatest impact on the rate and magnitude of consolidation, and vertical drainage of the surface. The K of the underlying till is extremely important because they can be a buffer between the dewatered bedrock aquifer and the VTS. The characteristics of the sediments and the flow regime surrounding three outcropping bioherms which increase vertical drainage are investigated and a conceptual model of flow is proposed. The sediments in profile around bioherms have different levels of stratification but always contain silt and sand units. The hydraulic conditions at eight nested piezometers and the stratigraphy as defined by a series of auger hole profiles was considered to develop a conceptual model. An investigation of surface current patterns related to upwelling in Monterey Bay, using high frequency radar

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / High Frequency (HF) radar backscatter instruments are under development and testing in the marine science and defense science communities for their abilities to remotely sense surface parameters in the coastal ocean over large areas. In the Navy context, the systems provide real-time mapping of ocean surface currents and waves critical to characterization and forecasting of the battlespace environment. In this study, HF radar, aircraft and satellite information were used to investigate and describe surface current in Monterey Bay, California, for a period of ten months, from June 01st, 2003 to March 31st, 2004. A network of five CODAR-type HF radar instruments measured hourly surface currents over the bay. The measurements were averaged over one-hour intervals and total surface velocities were mapped on a grid in the Monterey Bay. From the M1 Buoy located in the middle of the bay, an uninterrupted time series of wind intensity and direction was obtained for the whole period. Major upwelling events were observed during the period of June 14 to June 27, July 4 to July 19, August 8 to August 18 and other upwelling events were observed until late October. These periods of upwelling favorable winds are common during summer with durations of 10 to 20 days. Often they are interrupted by periods of relaxation state of just a few days as the winds veer to the northwest or northeast. Cyclonic circulation cells are developed on shore during upwelling conditions and an anticyclonic circulation in the middle of the bay is observed when the wind shifts to the southwest producing a strong flow out of the bay close to the coastline off Point Piǫs. Downwelling conditions are much common less than upwelling, with occurrences during winter and early fall storms with events lasting between two to five days. When the wind blows to the northeast with an intensity of 4 m/s or more for more than 12 hours, a well developed anticyclonic gyre forms in the middle of the bay. This is associated with a strong current, 35 to 40 cm/s, which flushes out in the southern part of the bay close to the coast off Point Piǫs. This flow reverses when the winds veer to the southwest and enter into the Bay with less intensity. / First Lieutenant, Chilean Navy

Erosion in Southern Monterey Bay

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / The coastal cliff top line recession has historically been used to calculate erosion along the Southern Monterey Bay. Digital photogrammetry is used in this work to produce Digital Terrain Models (DTM), representing the coastal cliff top line of 1984. This links the historical recession data sets with the LIDAR measurements of 1997 and 1998 and a 2003 cliff top line measured using Kinematic DGPS. Recession time series starting in the 1940's are produced for several locations. Least square linear fits of the recession data are computed for the periods 1940-84, 1940-98 and 1940-03. At Fort Ord and Sand City the resulting slopes show a persistent erosion trend of 1meter/year, unchanged in the last 19 years. The mean sea level (MSL) evolution is studied using historical San Francisco MSL data because of its high correlation with Monterey MSL. Higher MSL during El NinÌ o years, coincident with higher erosion rates show the correlation between erosion and MSL. In the long term, high-erosion El NinÌ o years combine with normal years averaging to a near constant erosion trend. For Phillips Petroleum and Beach Lab a significant decrease in the erosion rate is observed after sand mining stopped in Sand City. Digital Photogrammetry provides a high-quality representation of the shoreline topography, offering useful information to the warfighter in terms of detailed beach or landing zone characterizations. / Lieutenant Commander, Spanish Navy

A Comparative Analysis of the Subsurface Stratigraphic Framework to the Geomorphic Evolution of the Caillou Bay Headland, South-Central Louisiana

Studies have documented spatially and temporally variable rates of surface subsidence across the Mississippi River delta plain of Louisiana. Variations in patterns and rates of delta plain subsidence may reflect subsurface distribution of compactionprone lithosomes. This research investigates historical changes in the surface geomorphology of the Caillou Bay headland in relation to the distribution of subsurface lithosomes. The stratigraphic framework was developed for the headland, and lithosomes were identified to establish the distribution of different sedimentary units. The geomorphic evolution as indicated by maps was then evaluated in order to locate patterns of shoreline change and wetland loss for the headland. Land loss maps developed were overlain on lithosome contour maps to calculate amounts of land loss overlying each lithosome contour interval. Analysis of results revealed that land loss was not uniform throughout the headland and that land loss patterns for several time periods varied as a function of the thickness of compactionprone lithosomes.
