The use of the hand-held mirror as a patient education tool during routine pelvic examination / Preliminary title: Significance of mirror-assisted pelvic examinations to patient educationFawcett, Robert S. 03 June 2011 (has links)
Eighty-one patients in Planned Parenthood at East Central Indiana participated in the study. All patients were given a short quiz concerning female anatomy at their intake evaluation. All patients participated in the routine patient education session and intake history. The experimental group (N=41) was given a mirror through which to watch the pelvic examination. The control group (N=40) was given the same sort of examination without the mirror. The quiz was then repeated.Pre-test results were identical in the two groups. Both groups improved significantly on the post-test compared to the pre-test, showing the patient education session to be an effective tool. The experimental group improved more than the control group, however, and the difference was significant at the P=0.06 level.It is concluded that pelvic examinations which routinely include a hand-held mirror through which the patient may visualize her own genitalia are of significant benefit as a patient educational tool.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

The flat-plate solar collector is the most commonly used device for the direct utilization of solar energy, but its applicability in some places is still debatable. The performance of the solar collector varies with changes in environmental and operational conditions. In this thesis the performance ice of a flat-plate solar collector was examined in order to determine the feasibility of utilizing solar energy s an alternative energy resource for residential water and space heating purposes in East Central Indiana.Various environmental and operational data pertinent to the performance of the solar collector were collected over a period of 76 days (March 26 through June 10). Analysis of the data showed that the efficiency of the collector varies with changes in climatic and operational conditions. Negative relationships were observed between efficiency and fluid inlet temperature, wind speed, cloud cover and precipitation, while relationships between the collector efficiency and ambient temperature, solar radiation and fluid flow rate were found to be positive. Further analysis of the collector performance findings and the average energy consumption in i-iuncie, Indiana produced encouraging evidence for the utilization of solar energy for residential crater heating and space heating purposes in the area.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

In laboratory tests, the plant pathogen Fusarium roseum demonstrated the potential to serve as a self-sustaining biological control for the noxious aquatic weed Hydrilla verticillata. At fungal spore concentrations of at least 1 x 104 spores per ml, the fungus induced chlorosis, growth inhibition, abscission, and stem disintegration of diseased hydrilla tissue and eventually resulted in death of the plant. The pathogenicity of the fungus was affected by pH, spore concentration, and the length of time after inoculation. Fusarium roseum reisolated from diseased hydrilla tissue readily infected fresh hydrilla plants. Histological studies demonstrated the presence of foreign bodies in the vascular portions of infected hydrilla, although the fungus itself was not observed growing in the plant tissue.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Regeneration of the gastrocnemius muscle in 25 white rats was reinvestigated using reimplantation of minced muscle fragments in order to compare the fiber profiles of the regenerate and normal contralateral gastrocnemius. Fiber profiles were prepared from both the regenerate and the normal muscle 45 days postoperatively using myosin ATPase histochemistry.Counts made of type 1, 2A, 2B, and 2C fibers showed a significant (P<(0.05) change in the profile of the regenerated muscle compared to the contralateral muscle.The results indicated that although there was a change in the fiber profile at 45 days, the regenerated muscle appeared to follow a path of developmental recapitulation. The Hayes Arboretum Solar Greenhouse located in Richmond, Indiana, at 39° 50' N latitude, 84° 50' W longitude has been operational since December 1, 1976. Temperatures inside the 1000 square foot greenhouse were maintained at 55°F. minimum, 85°F. maximum. Data on gas usage was collected over a 24 month period (December 1, 1976 - November 30, 1978). Temperature data was collected during months when auxiliary heat was necessary to supplement the greenhouse.The solar greenhouse was designed by the author to test the feasibility of solar energy in Indiana. Solar energy provided 27% of heating needs during the two year period. Dietary manipulation to induce muscle glycogen supercompensation : effect on endurance performanceSherman, William M. 03 June 2011 (has links)
Previous investigations have utilized extremes of diet and exercise during the week prior to a performance to raise muscle glycogen levels to 220 mmoles/kg wet tissue. This investigation was designed to determine if muscle glycogen levels can be supercompensated utilizing a combination of a depletion-taper sequence and diets of 15% carbohydrate (CHO, LC), 50% CHO (M), and 70% CHO (HC) in 3,000 kcal. Each depletion-taper sequence was conducted on a treadmill at 73% V02max and consisted of runs of 90, 40, 40, 20, 20 minutes and a day of rest on the six days prior to a 13 mile performance run. Trial C consisted of 3 days LC and 3 days HC; Trial B, consisted of 3 days M and 3 days HC; and Trial C, 6 days M. Muscle biopsies were obtained from the gastrocnemius prior to loading (day 4) and before and after the performance run. Trials A, B and C elevated muscle glycogen to 207, 203 and 160 mmoles/ kg wet tissue, respectively. Trials A and B resulted in significantly more glycogen utilization (105 and 107 mmoles/kg wet tissue, respectively) than did Trial C (65 mmoles/kg wet tissue). The times during the performance runs were not significantly different between the Trials. It is concluded that: 1. muscle glycogen levels can be supercompensated to levels comparable to previous investigations by employing a depletion-tapering sequence and less severe alteration in diet prior to competition; 2. carbohydrate loading is not necessary for trained runners preparing for a race of 13 miles.Supported by the National Dairy Council and the Ball State University Graduate Student Research Fund, 1980.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306
