The effects of using video self-modelling and an IPad application on self-efficacy and acquisition of basic math skills in Year 5 students

Techaphulphol, Kanta January 2014 (has links)
This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of video self-modelling (VSM) and the iPad application (Fast Fact Math, FFM) interventions on a group of Year 5 students to increase their knowledge of basic number facts. This study also aimed to measure the intervention group’s self-efficacy levels (Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scales, PALS) before and following the interventions. Participants were drawn from a decile 9 primary school in a suburban area (teaches Year 1 to Year 6). The Test (pre-, mid-, and post-test phases) were administered by a class teacher to all Year 5 students. Following consultation with the teacher, eight students whose scores fell below the 25th percentile were invited to participate in the study. The intervention group took a specific level test to ascertain their basic number facts performance on all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). The videos and the FFM app were personalised to each intervention group’s members in an effort to elicit from the errors that they made on specific level test. At the completion of each intervention sessions, session probes were conducted. Meanwhile, the researcher gave a self-efficacy test (PALS) to the participants before and following intervention phases. Results showed that, although more than half of the intervention group increased their basic number fact performance level following the interventions, their overall self-efficacy rating on PALS did not change. Results also showed that VSM is a time-efficient and rapid learning method to use with the intervention group as opposed to the iPad app, which took two times longer to complete a session. Further areas of study are suggested.

However, some species are spreading and causing great inconvenience to the local population, hydroelectrics and other individuals who depend on the lakes for survival. The purpose of this work was to make an initial study of the biological control of the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia azurea by inserting the insect predator Thrypticus sp., using mathematical modeling and Markov chains of order 1. For that, a brief historical of the aquatic plant and of the insect is presented, as well as concepts related to Markov chains and their applications in biomathematics are discussed, supporting the realization of the modeling of the problem. Actual data obtained from a survey conducted by the author between 2002 and 2003, in the city of Coxim-MS, were incorporated in the modeling process. Simulations were performed for di erent scenarios, assuming infestation by plant in interconnected dams and the results showed the amount of insects needed to control in each cycle. The use of mathematical modeling and Markov chains allows the implementation of several tests. Nevertheless, to achieve more accurate results in relation to biological control we intend, in future work, to use a predator-prey model and analyze in more detail the problem, add more hypotheses, and to discuss aspects related to the predator population in environment in question. The work is a result of the Professional Masters and was written with the intention that teachers and high school students are being able understand the resolutions of the examples presented.

Influence of the Reflex Math Fact Fluency Program on Math Scores

Cress, Tammy D 01 January 2019 (has links)
Researchers have shown a correlation between students’ math fact fluency and their achievement in higher-level math. The problem investigated by this study was that 59% of students in intermediate elementary grades at the local school were not proficient in math. Guided by Miller’s information processing theory, the purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to examine the influence of the Reflex Math Fact Fluency Program on 2nd graders’ math achievement scores (as a whole group and by gender) after 1 school year of program use. Archival data was purposefully sampled for 98 2nd grade students (n = 50 boys; n = 48 girls) who were continuously enrolled for the entire 2018-19 school year and completed both the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 Star Math Assessments prior to and following exposure to the Reflex Math Fact Fluency Program. Results of a repeated measures t test showed students’ scores after using the program for 1 school year were significantly higher than the same students’ scores before the program. Additionally, a mixed-design ANOVA revealed a significant interaction effect such that girls’ scores before the program were higher than the boys’ scores but were lower than the boys’ scores after the program. Findings suggest that the Reflex Math Fact Fluency Program can be a valuable tool for elementary level students, especially boys, who are learning basic math skills. Implications for positive social change include providing the school’s stakeholders with a policy recommendation that may influence students’ access to additional instructional opportunities in math which could, in turn, lead to improved student achievement in math over time.
