Convergence on cooperation: the driving factors In U.S. and Russian cooperation on BelarusBrown, Joseph W. 09 1900 (has links)
Russia / Belarus / Oil Pipelines / Democratic Revolution / As the last dictatorship in Europe, Belarus is a "problem state" for the United States. This thesis analyses U.S. interests in Belarus and assesses the extent of interdependence of these interests with Russian interests there. It first establishes a theoretical framework for U.S. and Russian national interests and the possibility for cooperation between the two countries. It then examines the mutuality of U.S and Russian interests in Belarus in the areas of democracy and human rights, drug and human trafficking, arms proliferation, oil and gas transit, and Russo-Belarusian trade and political integration and the policy options available to each country. Next, other elements of cooperation are applied to the situation in Belarus. Finally, the possibilities for cooperation are evaluated. This thesis demonstrates that the achievement of U.S. interests is significantly constrained by Russia's willingness to cooperate and that the United States can best achieve its objectives only through cooperation with Russia. This cooperation should center on neither country's first preference, but a compromise solution involving the ascendance of a moderate opponent to Lukashenka from within the Belarusian elite.

Rysslands påverkan på den vitryska demokratiseringsprocessenEliasson, Christina January 2007 (has links)

This thesis sets out to investigate three questions, first, how the Belarusian democratization process has progressed since the country’s independence in 1991 to the year of 2006. Second, how the relationship between Russia and Belarus has progressed during this time and third, if and how Russia has affected the democratization process. The study has been conducted through qualitative method, mainly using books and articles as sources of information. It has been found that the democratization process in Belarus has evolved in a negative direction ever since the presidential election of 1994. During the selected time-period, the Russian-Belarus relationship has come to include more and more areas of co-operation and a deeper integration within these areas. Russia has by its support of and to the Belarusian regime, through subsidised energy and economic investments, made it possible for the regime to continue with anti-democratic policies. Consequently Russia has indirectly affected the democratization process in a negative way.

Podmínky rozvoje cestovního ruchu Běloruska / Development conditions of tourism in BelarusMartyniuk, Yana January 2011 (has links)
Belarus is placed on historical, cultural, political and geographical crossroad. Geographically, the country is located in heart of Europe. It is being said it is the gateway to the West. This is a relatively young state, which has been created after 1st World War on 25th of March 1918, right after the February Revolution, in the form of Belarusian National Republic. A year after it became a part of the USSR. On 26th of December 1991, the Soviet Union fell apart into 15 independent republics and Belarus has become one of them. The aim of the thesis is to analyze in details the potential of belarussian tourism and make it closer to Czech tourist. The history of the Belarusian nation in the presented work is described in accordance with the theory of the Belarusian opposition journalist Dmitri Novický and ultimately refutes the official version.
