Jean Ray, představitel belgické fantastické povídky / Jean Ray, a Belgian author of fantasy short stories

Tauchmanová, Jana January 2012 (has links)
Raymundus Joannes Maria De Kremer, best-known under the pseudonym of Jean Ray, was one of the most important Belgian authors of the first half of the twentieth century. His contribution to literature is immense, both in its volume and in its diversity, stretching well over sixty years of uninterrupted writing. While he wrote mostly short stories of the fantastic genre and adventure novels, he also published detective stories under the pseudonym of John Flanders. A major part of his work was published in newspapers and magazines. Jean Ray was bilingual, which allowed him to write both in French and Flemish, dividing his attention equally between the two. The majority of his writings was published either anonymously or under various pseudonyms. The aim of our thesis is to provide a monograph overview of the said author. The first part situates his work in the context of Belgian literature written in French and the fantastique genre in general. The second part is devoted to his life, with special focus on his literary career. The third part contains analyses of selected parts of his extensive oeuvre. Briefly, we look at the Harry Dickson detective stories. However, the core of our analysis are his fantastic writings, i.e. selected collections of his fantastic short stories and the only fantastic novel...

Muddy floods in the Belgian loess belt : problems and solutions

Evrard, Olivier 24 April 2008 (has links)
The first part of this thesis aims at defining the conditions triggering muddy floods in the Belgian loess belt. On average, each municipality is confronted with 3.6 muddy floods each year. Annual costs associated with their off-site impacts are estimated at € 16-172 millions for the entire Belgian loess belt. A topographic threshold is derived to predict the source areas of muddy floods. Furthermore, the storms required to produce a flood are, on average, smaller in May and June (25 mm) than between July and September (46 mm). This difference is explained by the variability of soil surface characteristics that determine the runoff potential of cultivated soils (soil cover by crops and residues, soil surface crusting and roughness). Steady state infiltration rates of cropland and grassed areas were characterised in the field using a 0.5 m2-portable rainfall simulator. Overall, grassed areas have a lower infiltration rate (16-23 mm h-1) than croplands (25-52 mm h-1). Muddy floods are mostly observed between May-September because of the coincidence of critical soil surface conditions for runoff generation with the most erosive storms. After an adaptation of its decision rules to the local conditions, the STREAM expert-based model provides satisfactory runoff/erosion predictions at the catchment scale. The second part of the thesis aims at evaluating the effectiveness of measures to control muddy floods. A modelling case-study showed that peak discharge was reduced by more than 40% by installing a grassed waterway and a dam at the outlet of a 300 ha-catchment. Monitoring the same catchment (2002-2007) demonstrated that the grassed waterway as well as three dams prevented any muddy flood in the downstream village despite the occurrence of several extreme storms (with a maximum return period of 150 years). Peak discharge was reduced by 69%. Specific sediment yield dropped from 3.5 t ha-1 yr-1 to a mean of 0.5 t ha-1 yr-1 after the installation of the control measures, thereby reducing drastically sediment transfer to the alluvial plain. Finally, a methodology is provided to implement grassed waterways and earthen dams in other dry valleys in the Belgian loess belt and comparable environments.

A Survey of the Sacred Choral Works of Joseph Jongen with a Conductor's Analysis of the Mass, Op. 130

Alban, Jeffrey M. 27 August 2008 (has links)
The manuscripts and published editions of the sacred choral works by Belgian composer Joseph Jongen sacred choral music were collected and listed, detailing the discernable pertinent characteristics of each work. Jongen is predominantly known for his organ works, but his choral works constituent a worthy contribution to the vocal music repertoire, especially his Mass, Op. 130. Jongen's music reflects the Impressionistic style while stemming from the school of César Franck. Choral directors and other musicians interested in Jongen's sacred choral works can use this work when exploring new repertoire. A short overview of Jongen's life is included based upon the information given in John Scott Whiteley's comprehensive book, Joseph Jongen and His Organ Music. The conductor's analysis provides a complete description of the Mass, Op. 130 with rehearsal and performance considerations. Phrase analysis graphs enhance the written analysis, and a discography of Jongen's sacred choral music completes this work.

Mwamba Isimbi Tang'Yele, Justin 22 October 2008 (has links)

Yen, Yu-chi 26 July 2012 (has links)
In the eighteenth century, the art of violin performance in France was promoted. Until in the nineteenth century, France became the center of art in the Europe, including painting, literary, architecture, and they were developed vigorously. The Paris Conservatory had a key position in music and expanded outward, and the music of Belgium was influenced very much, therefore they are named ¡§Franco-Belgian Violin School.¡¨ And the music is abundant in beautiful melodies and brilliant skills. Henry Vieuxtemps was an important and representative violinist at that period. By the way, his works presented romantic emotion. First chapter in this study presents the development of violin school. The second chapter introduces Vieuxtemps¡¦ position of ¡§Franco-Belgian Violin School,¡¨ the background of his works. The third and fourth chapter, do a research of the form, the interpretation and the performance style of Violin Concerto No.2 in F# minor, op.19. Then a conclusion in the final chapter. / Congenic animals have only one chromosome specific region transferred from one lineage to another through crosses monitored by genetic analysis. This methodology was used to produce a Nellore cattle congenic line carrying the myostatin gene polymorphism from Belgian Blue. The objective of this study was to compare birth weight, incidence of dystocy and neonatal mortality rate in animals from the 3 genetic variations for the myostatin gene (homozygotes without the polymorphism, heterozygotes and mutated homozygotes). Homozygous animals without the mutation were born with 31,19 ± 0,32 kg, heterozygotes werte born with 35,82 ± 0,32 kg, a difference of 4,63 kg and the mutated homozygotes were born with 40,46 ± 0,319 kg, with an increase of 9,26 kg above homozygotes without the polymorphism calves (p = 2*10-16). In addition, male calves showed an increase of 1,55 kg in relation to females. The rates of dystocia of calves homozygous within polymorphism and heterozygotes were 5,4% e 5,7%. The rates of mortality of calves homozygous within polymorphism and heterozygotes were 5,4% e 5,2%, within expected normalities. However, mutated homozygous animals had high rates of dystocia (47.5%) and calves mortality (37.3%). The data indicate that mutation in the myostatin gene when in heterozygosis results in an increase birth weight without causing increased dystocia or neonatal mortality. We conclude that animals heterozygotes can be produced on a large scale, and may be an advantageous strategy to increase the productivity of beef cattle.
